Hello everyone,
I am having problems when printing EPS files from PDFs.
Usually when printing directly from the native applications (Illustrator,
FrameMaker, PageMaker, etc) the files are printed correctly. However, after
creating PDF files from them and when printing these (on a normal PS
printer), EPS images are printed grayscaled (about 50% lighter than the
original color).
Does anyone know why this happens?
I have checked that all files have CMYK as the color format, that
registration colors are not used, that the post script level is set to be
compatible with 1,2 and 3 (when saving them on Adobe Illustrator). But
still, it does not matter what I do, the result is always the same:
grayscaled colors.
I have also checked the "Job Options" settings on the Acrobat Distiller and
it all seems to be alright.
I have never experienced this problem in Windows, but I do now I am working
with a Macintosh.
Is there a relation between the problem and how files should be saved or how
settings on the Distiller should be made? I have also noticed that EPS files
produced from Adobe Photoshop do not seem to face the same problem. The fact
they are all rasterized could be the reason for this to be avoided maybe.
Am I the only one having this problem?
If anyone has an idea why this is happening, please let me know.
Thank you very much.

We have a new customer using InDesign 2.0 to layout pages & build ads, they
make a pdf of the complete pages. They've only been printing at our site for
3 weeks, and until this week no problems. The pages/pdf's are sent via ftp.
One ad this last week was 4/C.....pictures, some color bars and a color
gradient background. Everything but the background separated correctly. I
have calls out to various folks in our company for help, but I'm almost
positive no one will have an answer, as all our offices use Quark 4.1 (they
know we will eventually have to upgrade, but with 15 offices & 33 papers,
this will be an ordeal).
I attempted to look at the elements of the ad via Acrobat 5, the background
temp file opened in Illustrator, and it was indeed cmyk. Could the gradient
have caused the problem? If nothing in the ad would have worked, I would
suspect the pdf process.
Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated.
Jackie
Yep, It's the gradient...
Many non-Adobe RIP's cannot handle the InDesign's Clean 8-Bit gradients
when interpreting the file for output.
If it's a single problem copy/paste into Photoshop and save as a Tiff.
Replace/place the (now...) image with some kind of PDF tool, e.g. PitStop
and output again...

This is for displaying in the web. They will have a large

can do this in an automated way.

background is this a setting in creating the pDF that I have missed.
Thanks

Inside the PDF or just available? Generated in advance or on the fly?

Sorry if not clear - as totally separate Jpeg files. In advance
would be easiest as long as we have a format to know what they will
be named and can progmatically refer to them.

Hi everybody.
Who knows an aplication for clean up images after scanning process? I am
scanning from old books into PDF files at 300 dpi, but the OCR is not good
because the images are bad quality.
Thanks in advance
Sincerely
David Coronado
Scanfix from TMS Sequoia is very good at cleaning up / de-skewing tiff images before converting to PDF. It is "very" fast. You would need to scan to tiff first, clean the image and then do the PDF conversion.

Thanks so much Lenn.
I had the customer re-do that ad, sans the gradient, and it worked
perfectly.
Just by chance, we are up-grading our rip this week.....so I hope that it
will correct the problem.
We (our IT dept.) are still looking into PitStop. Our Production VP is
anxious to get going with it, but as usual, we wait while they research.

You might also want to check out the free prologue file from Creo that you
use with Distiller. It fixes a lot of things that are problems at the
distiller level. The name of the file is CreoDistillerAssistant and is
available at:
https://ecentral.creo.com/eCentral/Self_support/downloads_results.asp?Produc
tName=PrinergyConnect&countryid=global. This also helps with colorized
Tiffs.
