We have created a large number of PDF files for a CD-ROM application and
mistakenly distilled the original Postscript files using the Print
JobOptions. The PDF files were then subjected to a number of manual edits
( hyperlinks and page resizing ) which involved a great deal of work. Now
we find that the PDF files are too large to fit on a single CD-ROM. We
need to downsize the PDF files without losing the manual edits. Can anyone
suggest how this might be done?
The one-page PDF files average 50 Kb when distilled with the Screen
JobOptions and 450 Kb when distilled with the Print JobOptions. I was
surprised at this difference since the pages contain only text and no
graphics. It appears the size difference is caused by something in the
color management settings of the distiller.

Among other options, I would humbly suggest our PDF TuneUp Service....

It could be that... it could also be that you are unnecessarily Fully Embedding lots of fonts when subsets would work as well. There are a variety of reasons for "bloated" PDFs...

Alan,
I would suggest trying PdfCompressor
http://www.cvisiontech.com/cvistapdf.html. Using the latest in JBIG2
technology, PdfCompressor obtains compression results that are often quite
dramatic, up to 10x smaller than standard PDF yet fully PDF-compliant.
PdfCompressor in default mode compresses each stream separately so that all
annotations, bookmarks, etc., are preserved. If the PDF files(s) contain
image streams, these can also be OCRed during the PdfCompression process.

It worked this time. Only two problems with it: 1) It doesn't work on a
Mac; and 2) minimum license is $2 Grand. I don't have the volume to
support that level of license fee. (IOW, I'm a cheap SOB.)
