This may be the wrong forum for this question, but here goes.

I’m making a master index to a year’s worth of PDFs produced from IDCS on a Mac that will be burned to a CD and distributed to subscribers. The master reference page is a new .indd document that will be burned to 5.0 PDF. I’d like to create my hyperlinks to the many pdfs in ID, but the hyperlink function won’t recognize the existing PDFs, just the ID documents that made them. Is this standard? Do I have to do all my linking on the PDF I export from ID? Or am I missing something here? I can’t set up a link to anything but ID docs and URL sites?

Hi Jay

I posted a similar question relative to Reader 7 on a Windows system, which may or may not be relevant, as follows

```````````````
I’ve written an application that uses HTML’s HREF to launch Reader with a specific pdf file when the user clicks a link in an HTML document viewed in a browser, such as IE 6.0
With Reader 6 and Acrobat 6, the link functions as it should. But with Reader 7, the behaviour is erratic. On first use following a new installation of Reader 7, the browser launches Reader 7 with the pdf file, which opens as it should.
On clicking the link again, the user gets this error message
“Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDF in your web browser. Reader will now exit. Please press the refresh button in your browser to start Acrobat.”
Refreshing repeats the pattern of behaviour, which is reproducible.
~~~~~~~

I’m wondering if the common factor is the way some versions of Reader do or don’t handle HREF in hyperlinks?

Jay,

There are quite a few issues with ID in the way it handles links recreated in PDF. We produce a CD in the manner you describe to get it to work I had to make a dummy ID file for every PDF. In the dummy file create a destination called say page1 duplicate the dummy and rename to match the pdf files names then link to the destination and not link directly to the PDF. If you have all ID originals then you don't need to make the dummy but in our case we have a mixture of sources. The other problem is that ID's links are absolute rather than relative.

Paul,

Ingenious about the similar names. I wouldn’t have expected that to work, but I guess the link manager doesn’t care about file types. The trick is to make sure the original ID file and resultant PDF have the same names. I would imagine that would be in the xml refs on file info. You’d think ID would be able to hyperlink directly to PDFs though. Save a whole lot of trouble all around.
