There are two basic structures to consider in years when we pick two teams. This concerns how we pick USA2 ( After last year’s Senior Trials I can definitely confirm what I had always suspected – the best strategy is to win all your matches and get to be USA1).

The issue concerns what happens to the loser of the main final. Should they be rewarded for getting that far by dropping into the USA2 final, or should they drop into the USA2 semis (which is the format for the Seniors). Please note that in the first case it’s necessary to have a somewhat skewed format for USA2. The first round needs to be 2 full days and the next 4 rounds are one day each. Under format 2 the two structures run in a more parallel fashion. Our crack arts and crafts staff (meaning Jan, of course) has produced the attached charts as illustration.

Please let me have your comments.

I think they should drop to the semifinal. Assuming you start with
sixteen unseeded teams, each team in the SF will then have won three
matches and lost one.

In my recollection, the question of Format 1 versus Format 2 was debated and
voted on last summer. We voted, and chose the format where the losing USA1
finalist joined 3 remaining teams in the USA2 bracket. We then began a
debate about how many boards the matches should be at the various stages of
USA1 and USA2. There is a tradeoff between having match lengths we like,
and the overall length of the Trials, in days.

Again in my recollection, we debated match lengths for a while, then (while
we were waiting for results of some simulations that had been suggested) the
cheating scandals began to unfold, and the subject of planning the 2017
Trials fell by the wayside.

We can review Emails from last summer to verify this, but if we have already
debated and voted to use one format, I don't think we need to go over that
again. We should instead move on to resolving the match-length questions.

Regards,

This is a discussion on the format from last year. I think this is the one Peter mentioned:
