Yes I totally agree with Reetu and Sunil that we need to think about
British asians as well. And let me just explain my point of view.
I live in South Wales. Rarely ever encounter the asian culture except
at ceremonies e.g. weddings. Not very reglious at home and no asians
around. I joined this society from my curiosity to learn more about my
own culture (seeing as I know so little about it). Even
regarding 'urban' crowds you all discuss, I don't really know that
either, not being a londoner (well not to the level of a londoner
anyway. urban gigs are a rare sight indeed outside of an asain
populated city).
I think some of these 300 and something asains in Sussex Uni must feel
this way (i hope, unless it's just me! lol).
And what about non-asains that are curious and interested?! Do they
not get a look in?! Are they not welcomed members as well?! Can't we
not all learn about Asain tastes, foods, ceremonies, habits,
interests, culutures (assuming it's all homogenous as many seem to
think!). Maybe we should lay out some ground principles and aims and
ensure they're fulfilled in every event, or some events anyway.
And yes, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many e-mails that are not laid out
very well and therefore difficult to read. Think about internal
communications?! If freshers get bombarded with miiiiiiiilions of e-
mails from a society, they'll get pissed off and unsubscribe! (Mind my
language) Not what you intend I'm sure. Unless this bombarding is just
for the committee. In which, no worries I'll shut up and get used to
it. :-)
Anyway, just a few things I thought should be mentioned (Sorry if it
offends). Also, won't be able to attend meeting (being miles and miles
away) but I don't seem to be helping much as it is anyway, so hope
meeting goes well.
Thanks for listening (reading),
Kavita
