hey all!

saw sunny's flyer, think its wicked, looks really professional and
appealing for our target audience - young asains with a high disposable
income - british asians are known to spend as much, and if not more, on
goods as any other ethnic group in the UK. think we need to go for
something like this as opposed to something that looks too asian coz
this will be off putting, ppl cant relate to really indian lookin
posters coz they're not around in the UK. perhaps if everyone takes a
look on his flyer and gives their responses...

think we need to consider our target audience a lot more
effectively.for example, think chai nights excludes a lot of ppl, esp
those like myself who, while i can appreciate it is part of asian
culture and is enjoyed by some at usas, isnt targetin the all members
of usas. it seems a lot of decisions are made in consideration of those
students that study from international countries.while i appreciate we
need to appeal to these students, i certainly feel a lot more needs to
be done to cater for british asains who experience asian culture in a
different way.

perhaps im alone in feeling this or who regards this as an issue with
usas please feel free to discuss this with me anyone who has an opinion
on this. i think usas needs to compromise a lot more in making
decisions by conisdering ALL of its members who may have different
ideas or expectations about what an asian society should offer.

look forward to hearing responses, Reetu : )

hey,

thanks for all the emails i got on the views of the flyer!

i agree with Reetu when she says that our target audience needs to be
considerd! If we want to talk numbers, then there are 1500 asians in
Brighton Uni, and 375 in Sussex. a huge number of these, especially in
Brighton uni are Brit Asians! and like Reetu says, and i have learnt in
Media Studies at A-level, British Asians are known as the brown pound
(i.e. they spend the most in terms of Ethnic minorities) and from
expierence in previous years, where i have organised events and gigs
i.e. boat parties on the river themes and other dinner and dances they
are willing to spend up to 30 pounds,(and these are people at college
where most ppl dont even have jobs!) so we need not to be scared in
raising the price on huge events! where it is worth it. When talking to
alot of brit asians on campus, i find they dont like to to join usas
becuase it doesnt cater to their needs.

What we can do is have two sub branches maybe?!, one can deal with
Indian students and organise events for them, and another can deal with
needs of british asians with perhaps more street credibility i.e. urban
events etc! i know alot of ppl at brighton uni are longing for events as
such! hence the huge responce to the hothouse event i am getting!
hopefully tht will go down well and we could make conclusions from that

enjoy the last few weeks for summer! and then we gota get the ball
running for next year! braap!

hey guys...may i make it abundantly clear that no 2 sub branches are
gonna be made here...just defeats the purpose.....with u guys with us
now in the exec, its gonna be a lot easier to attract one of the
target audiences...but one of the whole points is to make the 2 target
audiences to interact as well...so we can revamp the thing to cater to
everyone....mohammad and i had a meeting with the ACAS higher exec as
well as the univeristy union president Dan Glass yesterday...we talked
about a lot of things...including several things concerning british
ethnic minorities....rights issues and things....we will be making
both USAS and ACAS not just about partying and touching culture but
also make awareness about current affairs and what not....dan has an
impressive list of speakers coming round to uni this term....also Love
Music Hate Racism is coming and they need a list of ppl we wod like to
see.....doesnt reall matter how big the artist is....they can get more
or less anyone in britain...i told him bout rishi rich and punjabi
mc....but hey....gimme more names...an ill forward those to him....

when i said hothouse will be booked on monday, i said ON monday not
FOR monday.....it will be booked on monday for tuesday...lol...and the
flyer....i dint mean 'indian lookin poster"....i just meant hot
chick..lol...
i seriously think a meeting is needed soon....where and when can we
all meet...need suggestions....

cya...

remeber unity is power .besdides that some good news hothouse bookin
has been confrimed for th 10th besides tht we have the meeting house
for every wednesday knw for oct and nov we can have ur meetings and
can even screen movies there .We are thinking along the lines of
making a USAS introduction booklet union has showen there support and
they would be interested in helping us with the priniting of the
booklet.I was wondering shriansh if its possible to ask sindy to write
an article related to desi life in brighton for udergradtes and maybe
we can ask a post grad to write abt there experiences can u get

is itttt! lol sounds wiked! if they can get rishi sich project that wud
be sik!! lol they mix both english and punjabi so its all good for us
desi's and all good for black ppl coz its urban, and goreh who like tht
shit aswel!!!

wiked but the hothouse!! this is gona b wiked!

also im trying to sort out a diwali/eid thing
theres two/three options

1) we could hire a banquiting suit in brighton, my indian friend owns a
resturant, we could sort out cheap food and dj wud be free!. if 80
prople come and pay 20 pounds we would have 1600 pounds. and 80 people
are easy to find...remember 370 asians in sussex, and 1500 in brighton
uni and a few at city college!

BUT, another thing we cud do is hire a coach, lets say it holds 50
people- and everyone pays 5 pounds towards the coach and another 15 for
a dinner and dance in london! theres loads of places like monsoon,
baylis house, vikrams, which all charge 12-15 pounds, sheraton hotel(one
of the best) charges 15 for guys and free for girls! all offer an
all-you-can-eat 3 course buffet and bar with cheap drinks and a massive
dance floor and obviously becuase its in london, some of the best asian
dj's around. if we go sheraton, we split the costs between the girls and
guys so if 25 girls and 25 guys come each would pay 12.50, thats a coach
there, back and food and dance! wiked dont you guys think??

let me know any other ideas if anyone has them

also becuase we save alot of money from the shisha night (since its all
cheap, and we get like 60 pounds funding) we cud use some of the money
to promote the hothouse- i mean get the flyers printed by pro's and nice
glossy posters?! i know kavita has links in brighton...
