Student Ambassador: Karyn Comeau The theme of the Germany Pavilion is “Balancity,” the reciprocity between a city and its citizens. The Pavilion itself strikes a balance between two entities: an exhibition of Germany’s ‘green’ technologies and an interactive playground for people of all ages to enjoy. The Germany Pavilion is reminiscent of a large city. The entrance is a model of a harbor that leads into the city center, complete with an urban planning office, a commercial depot, a garden, a factory, and an art studio. Like any real city, the city in the pavilion offers much to see and do. What I found most striking was the last segment of the pavilion, the “Energy Source” room. The “Energy Source” itself is a large sphere hanging from the dome of the room. The sphere reacts to our bodily energies and the sounds of our voices, enabling it to move. Two guides, Yanyan and Jens, encouraged the crowd to harness their own vitality to bring the sphere to life. The activity is exciting and a lot of fun, but more importantly, it teaches a lesson about the importance and possibility borne of group cooperation to action. A city can only be improved if people cooperate to not only maintain it but also to actively innovate within it. The pavilion takes the Expo theme “Better City, Better Life” and asks the visitor, “What have you done for your city lately?” |
Reflections on Life at the USAP: Your Most Memorable Moment at the USAP? Posted: 21 Oct 2010 02:20 AM PDT Position: Student Ambassador Been at the USAP since: July I like meeting the people in Act III who are watching the Committee of 100 video featuring a rotation of pictures of Chinese Americans and their surnames. One day I was standing by the screen, and I saw a family come up and start watching the screen very intently. They told me they were waiting to see a relative of theirs in the States. Now, most of the thousands of Chinese Americans who show up on screen are featured in little pictures surrounded by lots of other little pictures of other Chinese Americans. Every now and then, a single portrait shows up and stays on screen for a half a minute or so, and, in fact, these people’s relative was one of those featured ones. They told me she was a big city author. They were so proud to see her up there, and I thought this was a great symbol of the closeness—and even pride—Chinese families can feel even when, like mine, they have relatives on both sides of the Pacific. Position: Student Ambassador Been at the USAP since: July Seeing Jimmy Carter speak at the Pavilion was pretty incredible. Here was this man who had dedicated so much of his life to serving the U.S.—and so much time to building U.S.-China relations—and here he was at the World Expo in 2010 sharing anecdotes and encouraging us. It felt like being in the presence of a legend, and yet he was so nice and real with us. So real it almost seemed surreal! Position: Student Ambassador Been at the USAP since: July One of my favorite moments was on a particularly beautiful day, as I was working the turnstiles. It was sunny, not too hot, and definitely not raining! My friend and co-Student Ambassador, Miljana, and I had been dancing for the guests as they waited at the front of the lines to get in to the Pavilion. We decided for this particular number to put on Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” and the two of us just danced away. The audience applauded and cheered, and in that weather, our excitement literally felt radiant. Xin Xin Zhang Position: Community Outreach Coordinator Been at the USAP since: June Mary Ling’s [our Director of Communications] birthday party! We had a staff party for her in the office, and it was so much fun. The cake was fabulous, and roses were thrown in the air. It almost looked like a little wedding reception! The most fabulous part was that we were all celebrating together, not only as colleagues but also as friends. Peter Wu Position: Entertainment Team Been at the USAP since: July My first week working at the USAP was during our National Week the week of July 4th. During National Week, we had Miss U.S.A.; Harry Connick, Jr.; Abigail Washburn; Angela Brown; and a marching band at the Pavilion. It was really intense to start work that week because I had to just jump into all the craziness—especially for the Entertainment Department—of that week. At times it was tough, but I definitely got the best learning experience I could have gotten out of that week. I learned everything that I would need to know for my time at the Pavilion since: planning and organizing events and then actually carrying out the events, with all the logistics of staging them. I got to really get to know other people from the Entertainment team and learn from the ones who had already been here. Knowing that I could handle that week helped me more confident since. And, did I mention? It was really exciting, too! 这批嘉兵包括Miss U.S.A., Harry Connick Jr., Abigail Washburn, Angela Brown, 还有一个军乐队。 |

The lucky seven millionth visitor received a unique gift from the U.S. State Department and a thank you letter from the pavilion organizer. Fang Shengqi from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province and his grandfather were warmly welcomed by Ambassador José H.
