USA Pavilion recently partnered with WildChina to offer users of the iPhone and iPod Touch Expo Guide Shanghai application exclusive access to USA Pavilion content. Through the mobile Expo Guide application, users can listen to facts about the pavilion, watch a sneak peak video inside the pavilion and submit their favorite USA Pavilion photos to the official USA photo contest. The application uses colorful 3D graphics and GPS navigation to guide visitors through a three-day, customizable tour of the entire Expo site. Navigation features enable visitors to locate themselves on an interactive map, look up bus routes and call a cab from inside the Expo grounds. Expo Guide Shanghai is available for download for $1.99 from the iTunes store. |
学生大使:马丽安 / Student Ambassador: Mary Anne McElroy Posted: 29 Aug 2010 11:55 PM PDT 学生大使:马丽安 大家好!我的名字叫马丽安,我很荣幸和高兴能够当美国馆的学生大使成员和成为传播部的一份子。我过去在中国的经验包括跟内蒙古舞蹈竞技,在北京的秀水市场留连,骑骆驼穿过塔克拉玛干沙漠,并在中国长城上烧棉花糖吃。此外,我花了两个暑假在联合国实习,为一北京美容诊所做市场推广工作,在纽约市一家独立的政治顾问所实习,并每周为Loyola University Maryland Greyhound撰写一次。我也认为自己是即食面和简单通粉的专家,以及中国非官方圣帕特里克节爱尔兰吉格舞的教师。
作为一个狂热的主播人迷,我计划在广播新闻事业这一方面发展, 并把这个世博经验看成为增进一些媒体业务小经验的一个好途径。如果这一切都失败,我计划留在上海和在上海的许多爵士乐酒吧以冒充明妮莉丽莎谋生—不要以为我在开玩笑。

Da Jia Hao! My name is Mary Anne McElroy and I am honored and happy to work as a member of the Communications Team and a USAP Student Ambassador. My previous experiences in China include dance-offs with Inner Mongolians, hours of haggling in Beijing’s Silk Market, camel rides through the Taklamakan Desert, and s’more- making on the Great Wall of China. In addition, I interned for two summers at the United Nations, worked on marketing campaigns for a Beijing cosmetic clinic, interned at an independent New York City political consulting, and wrote a weekly opinions column for the Loyola University Maryland Greyhound. I also consider myself an expert in Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac, as well as China’s unofficial St. Patrick’s Day Irish-Jig teacher.
An avid Anchorman fan, I plan on entering a career in broadcast journalism and see the Expo experience as a great way to learn a little about the media business. If all this fails, I plan on staying in Shanghai and making a living impersonating Liza Minnelli in Shanghai’s many Jazz bars- don’t think I’m kidding.
Although I doubt I will be using any camel riding skills acquired during my ’08-’09 Junior year abroad in China, I hope to use my marketing/journalism experience along with Beijing/New York street smarts to serve the USAP well. Being from New York City’s, the Expo feels quite like home; Kebobs and Jiao Zi for lunch, listening to a polyglot of languages, being one of the few Americans walking through the streets- sounds like a day in the East Village to me!

学生大使:柯本恩 / Student Ambassador: Benjamin Yale Cohen Posted: 29 Aug 2010 09:00 PM PDT 学生大使:柯本恩 如果你5年前问我现在的我会做什么,我很大机会会告诉你,24岁的我应该在努力为奥运会而在训练。我从来没有想过我会在2010年上海世博会的美国馆工作,而能够跟千千万万的中国人民交流更不用说。
我对国际交流的喜爱是从我在美国国际花样滑冰锦标赛的新手冰舞类别中获胜后开始的。我在奥运后备队得到一个位置,并在国际比赛中遇到很多来自世界各地的运动员。尽管我们之间的分歧,我们都在一起共同追求一个梦想。
自从大学开始以后,我从花样滑冰的领奖台上退下来了。我在2007年去了中国,去了解一个我不大了解的文化和当地的人。在国外的这一年,我有许多在巴士和的士里难忘的对话,也有很多与同学和教授的难忘回忆。
通过这些交流,我明白了一些美国缔造者坚定相信的真理。五年后的今天,我希望我能继续坚持认为,“人是平等的,而造物主赋予他们若干不可剥夺的权利,其中包括生存权,自由权和追求幸福的权利。”
Student Ambassador: Benjamin Yale Cohen
If you had asked me five years ago where and what I would be doing today, I likely would have told you that at age 24, I would be training for the Olympics. I never would have dreamed that I would be here, at the USA Pavilion for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, let alone speaking Chinese to thousands of people daily.
My love of international exchange began after winning the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships in the novice ice dance category. I gained a spot on the Olympic Reserve Team and met others athletes from around the world at international competitions. We came together in common pursuit a dream, despite our differences.
After retiring from competitive figure skating and starting college, I travelled to China in 2007 to learn about a culture and people I knew little about. In that year abroad, I had many unforgettable conversations in buses, in taxis and with classmates and professors.
Through these exchanges, I came to understand certain self-evident truths that founders of the United States so firmly knew. Five years from now, I hope to continue to uphold the truths that, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

黑夜小提琴在美国馆登台演出 / Black Violin To Perform at USA Pavilion Posted: 02 Sep 2010 12:58 AM PDT 黑夜小提琴是一个非常有活力的音乐团队。黑夜小提琴的成员包括两位训练有素的古典音乐音乐家。黑夜小提琴把爵士乐,嘻哈音乐,放克乐以及古典音乐做了一个完美的结合并创造出独特的音乐流派。黑夜小提琴的成员由演奏中提琴的Wil B与演奏小提琴的Kev Marcus组成。黑夜小提琴乐队的名字灵感取自于传奇般的小提琴音乐家Stuff Smith的音乐所带给他们的感动。Smith的最后一张转辑的名字就是“黑夜小提琴”。

【上海世博会美国馆舞台的表演时间点:】 Black Violin is a dynamic group comprised of two artists classically trained in string instruments, defying set music genres by combining jazz, hip-hop, funk, and classical. With Wil B on the viola and Kev Marcus on the violin, the name “Black Violin” was taken from the legendary violinist Stuff Smith. Smith’s last album was entitled Black Violin and as a nod to the influences that inspired the duo, Black Violin was born. The three-time Apollo winning group has also achieved success on the world stage while touring with the lead singer of Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda and his hip-hop project entitled Fort Minor. With performances with the Billboard Music Awards with Alicia Keys under their belt and a repertoire of work with a series of diverse artists such as P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin and the Eagles, etc. Black Violin’s impressive influences and ground-breaking sound are sure to take the world by storm. 熊猫, 木偶变脸, 和温暖:在四川省区馆 / Pandas, Masks, and Warmth at the Sichuan Pavilion Posted: 01 Sep 2010 09:19 PM PDT 学生大使:安彤 在八月十八日到四川馆盖章处的游客意外地遇到了两位来自美国馆的学生大使,忙于给游客的世博护照盖有红色熊猫的章,同时认定他们是地地道道的四川本地人。国精忠和我两位学生大使们都参加了美国馆与中国省区馆的第三次交换活动。四川馆的两位熟练员工王女士和杨女士当天也访了美国馆。 我们感到十分幸福,因为在省区馆的《四川周》中访了四川馆,因此跟其他游客有机会看到一场四川木偶戏表演,看演员让木偶变脸,吹火,甚至写书法。我们也有机会认识四川馆好客的员工与管理者,当时发现员工中有一些像我们的大学生和毕业生。他们试图了教我们一点音调底,声调平平的四川方言。我们跟许多游客也交流了,并参加了一个学生大使不常见的活动-那就是盖章。 美国馆的学生大使是专门来世博会像万位游客代表他们的国家。像我们这次交换的活动是继续这个任务,因为能够带我们微笑脸到世博其他的地方。可是对我们个人来说,也算是机会跟世博的其他参展人员见面,并在另外一个馆的气氛中工作。我们学生大使们都自私地期望美国馆会继续安排这样的交换活动。 Student Ambassador: Antoine Cadot-Wood Visitors to the Sichuan Provincial Pavilion on August 18th encountered an unexpected sight at the passport table: a pair of USA Pavilion Student Ambassadors were stamping Expo passports with a bright red panda while cheerfully claiming to be true Sichuan natives. Fellow Student Ambassador Yoav Oren and I participated in this third exchange between the USA Pavilion and a Chinese provincial pavilion, with veteran Sichuan Pavilion staff members Ms. Wang and Ms. Yang spending the day at the USA Pavilion. We were fortunate enough to visit during the Pavilion’s Sichuan Week, and thus were treated along with other guests to a Sichuan puppet performance. We watched as several puppet masters manipulated their characters to rapidly change masks, blow fire, and even write calligraphy. We also had the opportunity to meet the pavilion’s extremely hospitable staff and directors, finding that many of the staff were college students or freshly graduated like us. They attempted to teach us a few words of Sichuan dialect, with its low pitch and flat, musical tones. We also were able to interact with many of the guests, greeting them at the door and of course stamping their passports, an activity that few if any USA Pavilion Student Ambassadors have experienced. Student Ambassadors were brought to the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai in order to represent their country to millions of visitors. Exchanges like ours continue that mission by giving us a chance to bring our smiling faces to other parts of the Expo. For us personally, however, it is also an opportunity to meet other Expo participants and experience the atmosphere of working at another pavilion. It is our selfish hope as Student Ambassadors that such exchanges continue. |
学生大使:国精忠 / Student Ambassador: Yoav Oren Posted: 02 Sep 2010 10:51 PM PDT Yoav Oren系2010上海世博会美国馆学生大使。 Yoav出生于美国新泽西州的普林斯顿,在耶路撒冷和内盖夫的斯德伯克长大。他9岁起便在耶路撒冷的一家武术学院学习空手道,13岁就成为了该校历史上最年轻的空手道黑带获得者,还在当地武术学校担任指导讲师。此后他来到中国,在武术大师门下研习八卦掌套路和陈式太极拳。 Yoav拥有美国哥伦比亚大学中国与东亚研究专业学士学位。在哥大学习期间,他在纽约积极传授陈式太极拳和以色列格斗术(马伽术)。期间他数次回访中国,深入学习中国武术,并参加了哥伦比亚大学在上海的工商管理学习项目。 Yoav的父亲——以色列驻美大使迈克尔·奥伦大使,和Yoav的母亲莎莉目前居住在美国华盛顿。
Yoav Oren is a Student Ambassador to the USA Pavilion in the Expo 2010 Shanghai. Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Yoav was raised in Jerusalem and the Negev community of Sede Boker. Yoav was the youngest person in its history to receive a black belt and he subsequently studied with martial arts masters in China, gaining proficiency in the ancient forms of Bagua and Chen style Taiji Quan. Recently, Yoav completed his studies at Columbia University, majoring in Chinese and East Asian Studies. Throughout his studies at Columbia, Yoav taught Chen style Taiji Quan and Krav Maga in New York. He also made several return visits to China, continuing his martial arts studies, and participating in a Columbia University Business program in Shanghai. Yoav’s parents, Ambassador Michael Oren, and Sally, currently live in Washington, DC. |

The lucky five millionth visitor received a special gift bearing much connotation of Chinese culture from the Pavilion team. Mr. Lv and Ms. Zhang from Kun Shan were welcomed by Mr. Thomas E. Cooney, the U.S. Deputy Commissioner General to Shanghai Expo, before receiving a special paper scroll with Chinese calligraphy written by an American Student Ambassador with the USA Pavilion. “This is an exciting and humbling moment as we welcome our Five Millionth visitor to the USA Pavilion,” said Ambassador José H. Villarreal, U.S. Commissioner General. “This milestone symbolizes the remarkable cultural exchange that has been taking place between the United States and the people of China since the opening of Expo. It is made possible through the generous support of our sponsors, the U.S. State Department, the Shanghai Consulate, and our incredibly dedicated staff and Student Ambassadors.” The Chinese scroll was the most novel gift among the pavilion memorabilia that Mr. Lv and Ms. Zhang have received. The Chinese calligraphy on the scroll, which reads “MEI GUO GUAN YU NIN XIN LIAN XIN” meaning “the USA Pavilion stays with you heart to heart”, was written by Student Ambassador Yoav Oren, who has nearly ten years’ experience studying Chinese culture and martial arts. The scroll is completed by stamping a unique jade seal inscribed with ancient Chinese characters that read “To the five millionth visitor of the USA Pavilion”. “I feel overjoyed by this surprise. I really like the symbolic gift that represents the friendship between the Chinese and American people. The USA Pavilion is the number one choice on my priority list for the Expo trip and what a surprise I have received!” Mr. Zhang said with a big grin. Being one of the most popular pavilions at Expo 2010, the USA Pavilion has kept a momentum of hosting 45,000 visitors per day, and is expected to receive more than seven million guests over the entire duration of the Expo. |
美国馆志愿者成为青年成就学生的导师 / USAP Volunteers Mentor Students from Junior Achievement China Posted: 06 Sep 2010 08:27 PM PDT 学生大使: 裴翔 这个月,美国馆的职工和学生大使们不仅仅会给参观者留下甜美的笑容,而在九月十八日将和上海本地学校的小学生一起开展“未来城市,绿色畅想”的活动。这项活动是由青年成就中国发起的。这个集团为全球高中以下的学生准备了一些项目,通过这些活动可以培养学生的创新思想、使学生们了解金融知识、做好工作前的准备。 “未来城市,绿色畅想”的志愿者来自美国馆、上海中美商会、和美国馆的赞助商。志愿者们会在上海和苏州的小学中组成十五个团队。志愿者会给学生们鼓励、培养他们的创新意识,激发他们在18日的展示会中设计出最好的绿色产品。 这些学生来自不同领域,包括农民子弟学校。美国馆的学生大使 MELISSA MONNIER 很感谢青年成就和美国馆,在帮助农民子弟的孩子活动中她兴奋地说:“跟他们在一起的过程中,你可以看到孩子们的自信心的提高,花这些时间是值得的。” 青年成就的副总统罗小姐说,真没想到有那么多来自国外的志愿者会一起加入到这项活动中。她说:“这个活动最主要的目的是美国馆的志愿者和这些学生之间的文化交流,对这些孩子们来说是他们第一次和外国人在一起互动。” Student Ambassador: Robert Pettit This month, USA Pavilion’s Student Ambassadors and staff will do more than just greet visitors with a smiling face. Volunteers from USAP will mentor Shanghai elementary students in the “Junior Achiever Green Innovation Challenge” Primary Student Green Fair on September 18th. This event is hosted by Junior Achievement China. Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through hands-on programs. Volunteers from the USA Pavilion, American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, and many of the USA Pavilion’s sponsors, will meet with a total of 15 JA student teams from schools across the Shanghai area and one school in Suzhou to provide encouragement and mentorship to student-designed green products which will be on display at the Green Fair. The students come from diverse backgrounds, including migrant children. Student Ambassador Melissa Monnier is excited about the opportunity to volunteer with migrant children through JA China and USAP. “By just spending time with them, you can see their confidence improve.” According to Isa Luo, Vice President of Junior Achievement in China, the amount of foreign volunteers is unprecedented for an event of this nature with JA China. “The most important aspect of this event is the cultural exchange between USA Pavilion volunteers and these students,” Luo says. “For some of these children, it is their first time interacting with a foreigner.” |
