汶川大地震两周年之际，30位来自汶川的抗震救灾小英雄参观了2010年上海世博会美国国家馆。美国展区总代表费乐友先生亲自接待了小英雄们，并赞赏了他们的勇敢行为。

On the second anniversary of the Wenchuan Earthquake, 30 Little Heroes of Earthquake Relief Work visited the USA Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai. U.S. Commissioner General, José H. Villarreal, greeted the little heroes and commended their courage.

学生大使邓珮乐 / Student Ambassador Pam Derck

我的名字是邓珮乐. 我的大学是在Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania，但是事实上我来自于Philly.所以我一直自认为我是一个费城女孩。我刚结束了我的大三生活，希望能在接下来两个学期学习的中文和日语后顺利毕业并且获得亚洲文化/全球文化的学习学位证书。我已经在大学学习了3年的日语和中文（日语学了6个学期，中文7个学期，我去年夏天在武汉）。毕业了以后，我来到了中国并教了一年的英语，然后我回到了自己原来的学校继续学习中文。事实上，我希望能加入教学行列，尽管我不确定我属于哪个等级。我一直期望能用我所学到日语和中文做些事情，但是他们一直没有用武之地直到最近我参加了世博会。我想今年夏天在世博和去年夏天在武汉的经历我都会受益匪浅。

对于我来说，中国是一个以人为主的国家。他们会对我打招呼，或者说“你好”或者是对我微笑。在世博会开始之前，我每天都在馆外奔波，当我劳累的时候我就会试着把它当作一种游戏。我会寻找那天看起来不是特别兴奋或者特别开心的参观者，我希望我能通过自己的力量让他们开心起来。有一次，在两个展示当中，参观者需要在排队线中等候10分钟，有一个20多岁的青年人看上去对他要排那么久的队感到有点烦躁，我给予他的眼神示意并且在脸上挂上了一个大大的微笑。可是他没有反应。一分钟以后，我又对他做了相同的事情可是得到的还是一样的结果。当我第三次冲他微笑的时候他回应了我——招了一下手，但是仍然没有笑容。一次又一次，我重复着我的微笑，最终他露齿笑了，并且和我击掌说见到我很高兴。每一次，当我面对困难没有信心的时候，我都会试着回想起这次经历。


相同的，这次世博会的主题也都是关于人。今天晚上当我在从园区到世博村的巴士上，我遇到了一位来自土耳其的人，他非常兴奋的给我介绍那些可以在土耳其馆买到的食物。接着他给我看了他的名片并且告诉我说如果我想去他那里，他会给我最好的招待。事实上我会周游全世界并且在空余时间向全世界广交朋友，那会是我觉得最有活力也最乐意做的事情，我也期待着能走遍世博 会中的每一个场馆。

My name is Pam Derck, and I go to college in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but I originally come from the Philly side of the state. That given, I consider myself a Pennsy girl through-and-through. I’ve just completed my third year of college, and am (hopefully) on track to graduate in two more semesters with a dual major in Japanese and Chinese, along with certificates in Asian Studies and Global Studies. I have studied both Chinese and Japanese at college level for three years (Japanese 6 semesters, and Chinese seven, since I spent last summer in Wuhan). After graduation, I want to come back to China for a year to teach English, and then go to grad school back in the states for Chinese linguistics. Eventually, I want to enter the education field, although I’m not sure at what level. I’ve known for a great amount of time that I wanted to do something with foreign languages professionally, but it hasn’t been until recently that I focused in on Chinese. I think this largely has to do with all the positive experiences I’ve had in China, both this summer and last summer.

For me, China is all about the people. Whether I get the chance to talk to them at length, or just say ‘ni hao’ and put a smile on their faces (the latter of these situations occurs much more often). I’ve been working outside almost every day since the expo opened, and I’ve actually turned this into a kind of game when I get bored. I will actively pick out the people who look least excited and least happy and see if I can put a smile on their faces. One day, in between shows when the people in line had to wait ten minutes, there was a young man around twenty years old who could not possibly have looked less enthused to be where he was. I refused to be put off by this, and made eye contact and gave him by biggest smile. He didn’t even react. A minute later, I did the same thing, with the same results. After this happened a third time, he finally gave me a small wave, but still no smile. Again and again, I repeated this, until finally, by the time he went through the turnstile, he was grinning from ear to ear and shook my hand, saying how happy he was to meet me. Every time something discouraging happens, I try to keep these kinds of memories foremost in my mind.

Similarly, the expo (and Shanghai in general) is also all about the people. Tonight on the bus ride from the expo back to the village, I met a man from Turkey, who very excitedly told me about the food you could buy at the Turkish Pavilion. He then showed me his nametag told me to mention his name if I stopped by, followed by the assurance that I would get the best treatment. The fact that I can travel around the world (metaphorically, of course) and meet people from all around the world (literally) on my free time is probably the most powerful and wonderful feeling I’ve ever had, and I look forward to trying to get to every single pavilion on the grounds.

美国馆参观者15天突破50万 / USA Pavilion Draws Half Million Visitors in Fifteen Days

（2010年5月15日上海）开幕仅15天的2010年上海世博会美国馆今天迎来了该馆第50万名参观者。

近期调查显示，美国馆已成为本届世博会最受观众期待的场馆之一，日均接待观众约35000人次。预计整个世博会期间，美国馆参观者总数将逾600万。

“我对美国馆在如此短时间内所取得的成效感到十分欣喜，”美国馆总代表费乐友（José H. Villarreal）先生说道，“在过去两周内，美国馆有幸接待了来自中国以及世界各地的50万名参观者。我们对于参观者的积极评价表示由衷的感激，并将继续满怀热情，真诚欢迎各界宾朋的到来。”

[SHANGHAI, 15 May 2010] –The USA Pavilion at Expo Shanghai 2010 welcomed its 500,000th visitor today, only 15 days after it opened on May 1. In a recent poll, the USA Pavilion was named one of the most anticipated Pavilions at Expo 2010. The USA Pavilion is expected to accommodate an estimated 35,000 visitors per day, or approximately six million guests over the six-month duration of Expo.

“I am amazed by what we were able to achieve in such a short time”, said U.S. Commissioner General, José H. Villarreal. “We are proud to have hosted 500,000 visitors from across China and around the world during the past couple of weeks. We appreciate the positive feedback from our visitors. We will continue to welcome all of our guests with warm American hospitality.”

学生大使王圣荟 / Student Ambassador Bessie Wang

你好上海！世博会已经开始，我很高兴来到这里！我叫王，英文名字叫贝茜，我是美国馆的学生大使。我出生在上海，从小在美国长大，所以很高兴能回来。目前，我是在加州大学圣巴巴拉分校的大学生，本学期是上海复旦大学的交流学生。其实我已经为这次世博会等了两年了。在完成了奥运会的志愿者的工作之后，我明白我的生活必须与世博会紧紧地连接在一起。作为2008奥运志愿者我学到了很多，结交了许多新朋友，并留下了许多美好的回忆，这也决定了我不能错过世博会。要平衡复旦大学的学习和世博会学生大使的工作很艰难，我一方面要做一个好好全职学生，另一方面还要做超过每周40小时的世博会的工作，但这又是绝对值得的。我的时间几乎全都投入了世博会，从我开始了世博会的工作后已几乎没有时间和我复旦朋友们的进行交流了。每周两天的早上九点到晚上九点的学校学习也使得我在校都没有足够的时间和朋友们交流嬉戏。事实上，三天前三位同学为我庆祝我的生日，让我减轻了远离父母和家的孤独感并给我带来了极大的安慰。千万不要误会我，我爱世博会，但此时此刻让我非常思念学校的生活。看起来我象是疯了吗？我是那么的想念煮饭大婶、串烤餐馆、我的宿舍、我们的深夜学习讨论会，还有光华楼。希望在五月后，世博会的喧嚣能渐渐地平缓一些，我也能有更多的时间和你们及学校在一起。

Hello Shanghai! Expo has started and I am so excited to be here! My name is Bessie and I am a Student Ambassador from the United States. I was born in Shanghai and grew up in the US so it is great to be back. Currently, I am a college student at University of California, Santa Barbara and am an exchange student at Fudan University. I have actually waited for this event for two years already. After working for the Olympics and having the time of my life, I knew that I needed to participate in the World Expo as well. I learned so much as an Olympic Volunteer, made many new friends and have memories that will last me a lifetime that there is no way I am going to miss out on World Expo.
It is definitely tough balancing Fudan and Expo, full time student and working for more than 40 hours a week, but it is definitely worth it in the end. Expo has consumed my life so I haven’t been able to see my Fudan friends as much since I started working. Two days of school a week from 9am to 9pm doesn’t leave much time for fun and socializing with friends. I actually got to see three of my classmates three days ago when they came to celebrate my birthday with me and I was overcome with homesickness and relief to see people outside of expo. Don’t get me wrong, I love Expo but being here every day makes me even miss school. Crazy right? I miss the fried rice lady, the skewer restaurant, my dorm room, late-night study sessions and even Guang Hua Tower. Hopefully after May, the Expo excitement will calm down and I will be able to visit school more.

Herbie Hancock 演唱会之旅 / My Herbie Hancock Experience

这次 Herbie Hancock 来上海，其实已经关注很久了。而这次参加活动既可以一览美国馆，晚上又可以在综艺大厅看到大师的演出，实在是一举两得呢。

下午和 DJ 一起来到后滩入口处，工作人员的接待非常热情，一路陪同我们来到了美国馆。由于可以走快速通道，剩下了不少排队时间。门口处老外一句标准的上海话“欢迎来到美国馆”令人印象深刻，为了馆外等待观众所准备的舞蹈也非常有活力。

小等片刻后进入了美国馆，4块投影屏即抓住了人们的视线、讲的是老外学汉语，屏幕的颜色三红一篮，对应着星条旗的底色，真的是别有用心呢，科比也有出现哦！


接下来了两个展示，都代阐述美国对于能源利用，环境保护的理解。声光效果非常出色，特别是之后那5块超大的不规则 LED 屏幕，而且会配合屏幕内容改变背光，将整个故事描绘的异常生动。

浏览完美国馆后，今日之行的重点——也就是 Herbie Hancock 的音乐会压轴登场了！。一行人提早到了大厅安静地等待开场，顾中山、还有 JZ 的乐手们，看到了不少爵士圈的人呢，据说乐器是直接空运过来的。

掌声中出场的是 Thelonious Monk Institude 的音乐团，水平着实令人惊艳！也许是 Live Show 看的不多的关系，这真是看过最棒的表演了。

接着是 Dee Dee，去年因为某些缘故没能去看，这次终于能弥补遗憾了。彻底被她那富于张力，却又不失细腻的声线所征服了。

在长而久的掌声中，Herbie Hancock 登场了，上来即是那熟悉的旋律，<<Watermelon man>>，第一次看到现场的西瓜人，别提有多激动了!接着又是教科书一般的曲子<<Maiden Voyage>>，不愧为 Jazz Standards! 之后的演出也是高潮迭起，Dee Dee 时而有点“疯”的演唱，和乐手们的默契配合，以及 Hancock 和 Dee Dee 的合作——此时此刻，真的感觉自己是天下最幸福的人了。

当然还有更令人喜悦的，在工作人员的帮助下，大师在我带去的<<Taking off>>上签名了，今天对我而言，变得更有纪念价值了！

感谢 USA Pavilion 能够给予我这样进距离接触大师的机会！感谢幕前幕后的工作人员，没有你们就没有如此秩序和出色的展馆，没有你们也不会让我们看到这样精彩的表演~。大家不妨继续关注美国馆的动态，在接下来的日子里，肯定会有更多的惊喜！

I’ve been anticipating Herbie Hancock’s visit to Shanghai for long time. My excitement was doubled after I was chosen as the lucky winner on T-Sina Microblog and received tickets to Expo 2010.
After entering from the Houtan entrance, I was warmly received by staff members directly led into the USA Pavilion, where I was placed into the fast pass line, avoiding the long wait. As soon as I entered into the pavilion, a student ambassador greeted us and said “welcome to the USA Pavilion!” in precise Shanghai dialect. I was truly amazed

On entrance to the Pavilion, I was amazed by the four projection screens, displaying Americans attempting to speak Chinese. The color of the screen was red, white and blue, the national colors of the USA. I was also surprised to see Kobe Bryant.

The following two short films highlighted the usage of energy and understanding of environmental protection. Sound and light effects were outstanding, especially the five large LED screens which changed colors as the content changed, animating the story.

After visiting the USA Pavilion, I was ready for the highlight of the day— the Herbie Hancock Concert! Along with my uncle, I arrived at the Entertainment Hall early and waited quietly for the opening. I saw some of the people from the Shanghai jazz community also had seats. I also heard that the musical instruments were flown in from the USA.

First to appear on stage was the Thelonious Monk Institute Ensemble, making an amazing appearance to a loud round of applause. Maybe due to the fact that I haven’t attended many live concerts, but the performance was the best I ever saw.

After the Ensemble played a couple songs, Dee Dee Bridgewater came on. Last year I missed her show in Shanghai, but this time, I finally had the chance to catch her live. I was totally fascinated by her extensive while exquisite voice.

Herbie Hancock, then came on the sage to a long round of applause, playing first the famous Watermelon Man. It was my first experience listening to it live and my excitement was beyond description. Afterwards, came the classic Maiden Voyage, which absolutely lived up to Jazz Standards! Then the concert’s greatest moment though was with all the musicians playing together, with Dee Dee performing with zealous passion, musicians showing incredible skills and great cohesion between Hancock and Dee Dee. This was the moment when I felt like the happiest person in the world.

And then there was the great surprise. With the help of USAP staff, Herbie Hancock signed a copy of his Taking Off, which made my day even more memorable.

I’d like to give thanks to the USA Pavilion for providing me with the chance to come in distance with such great artists. Thanks again to USAP staff, working behind the scene. Without you there wouldn’t have been such an organized and outstanding pavilion, and there wouldn’t have been the chance for me to watch such a wonderful performance. I suggest that everyone gives close attention to the USA Pavilion, and I am sure that there will be more surprises in the upcoming days.

你我祈愿共同实现把生日蛋糕送给 Rosemary 小姐

前几日，美国馆的新媒体工作团队人员在做信息整理的时候，发现在我们 Google Buzz 频道 的一位阅读者中，有一位 Rosemary 小姐的消息，很简单朴实，她说，

“我公司CEO挑我生日那天在世博美国馆设宴招待客户，不知我是否有幸能在世博里过生日”

我们看到后都很感动，这是一个多么难得的巧合啊。人生中有那么多事件，虽然很多时候很美好，但是既美好又巧合的事情少只有少。

可是我们不知道如何帮助她，因为美国馆的活动是由各个合作伙伴和工作团队协作完成，而如果不秉持公平的方式，我们无法做到坚持这个馆的精神。我们需要网友们的支持，让我们的所有部门都受到感染，共同来帮助 Rosemary 小姐达成这个愿望。

在得知一些网友的想法后，Rosemary小姐在 Google Buzz 中表示，

“大家别期待了，能和我们CEO吃BRUNCH的，都是政商名流的，我什么咖呀”

我们不希望是这样的结局，大家一起来努力，共同来为她祝福吧。我们已经透过内部信息系统传递了这个消息，但是如果有更多网友共同来祈愿，我们就越容易成功。我们的想法是，如果能够在 Google Buzz 中汇集到200位网友的祈愿，我们就一定能够争取到为她在美国馆点亮生日蜡烛，也要争取到她的亲友来参加。

From L.A. to the World

In their fourteen years together as a band, celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli have gone from being hometown heroes to being named U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors. Ozomatli has always juggled two key identities. They are the voice of their city and they are citizens of the world. Their music– a notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga– has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A.

In 2007, the  band had long been a favorite of international audiences—playing everywhere from Japan to North Africa and Australia—and their music had always been internationalist in its scope, seamlessly blending and transforming traditions from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East (what other band could record a song once described as “Arabic jarocho dancehall”), but two years, they entered the global arena in a different way. They were invited by the U.S. State Department to serve as official Cultural Ambassadors on a series of government-sponsored international tours to Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East, tours that linked Ozomatli to a tradition of cultural diplomacy that also includes the esteemed likes of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong.

In places like Tunisia, India, Jordan, and Nepal, Ozo didn’t just play rousing free public concerts, but offered musical workshops and master classes and visited arts centers, summer camps, youth rehabilitation centers, and even a Palestinian refugee camp. They listened to performances by local musicians and often joined in for impromptu jam sessions with student bands and community musicians. Most shows ended up with kids dancing on stage and their new collaborators sitting in for a tabla solo or a run on the slide guitar.

Suddenly the lessons of L.A. had found their way into the world at large. “I’ve always felt that music is the key to every culture, the beginning of an understanding,” says vocalist and trumpet player Asdru Sierra. “It’s a language far more universal than politics.”

学生大使：非常感谢你今天能来。我们准备了7个问题但是我只准备问两个。第一个问题是：音乐的历史让人们有了一个普遍的目标。现在你在2010年的上海世博会，你怎么看待爵士乐对于我们和中国关系的建立？

HH:欧，爵士乐在其历史中甚至是在中国都起到了一个“引路人”的代理工作。大约30岁或者是和我们年龄差不多的不同类型的艺术家都来到了这个爵士乐的世界，比如Dee Dee Bridgewater和我就是其中两例。爵士乐是一种能与全世界交流的语言。它是一种开放式的音乐，其包容了许多不同文化种类，因为它是由多种多样的文化组成的。所以爵士乐的精神核心就是把大家融洽的聚集在一起。甚至爵士乐的团队也是由一群人由世界各地前来组成的，所以让我们把整个星球都能融合一个团队吧。

学生大使：谢谢，非常感谢！呃，接下来，最后一个问题爵士乐的语言是由许多调式/模式/节奏以及即兴创作组成一种自由的独特形式。其作为一个美国艺术形式，你是否觉得爵士乐的改革是类似于美国人民自1776年开始的一场为自由的战争？或者说是相反的？

HH:不，我认为爵士乐应该是，呃…它就像是人类的精神能力能够把最坏的情况复原…或者是改变成一些更有创造力或是更令人振奋的。有很多期望DDB:欧，是的，绝对的。我很认同Herbie。音乐同时也是非常自由的。因为正是一种音乐让很多音乐家和演唱家来表达他们自己。这些是除了音乐他们所不能做到的。

DDB:还有，自从美国艺术起源到现在，我就发现了音乐之美。它穿越了整个世界，恩，你知道的，很不可思议。所以我觉得…恩….音乐是世博的信息传递，你懂吗？“更好地城市，更好地生活”事实上我们用不相同的语言也可以交流，我们对明天总是充满着期望，我们不需要去说哪一种相同的语言。所有的沟通都只用感觉和心，对的，就是这样。

学生大使：在结束之前，你想和你的中国粉丝们说些什么吗？

DDB: 我对这次能来中国感到非常高兴与欣喜，能展现出我自己的生活与Herbie并且和在上海的大众一起分享。我认为我们都会说今晚的所有人都 太棒了。这里的每一个人，每一刻。你一直可以听到有人在喊“太棒了！”“加油”“干的好”这是一种很大的鼓励，因为它能证明着音乐拥有很大的能量。

HH:我想附加一下：爵士乐在是一种分享和一种很好的享受来自中国，中国人的心中同样也有这样的感受，那样的时间就是我们需要的时候，来分享我们积极的能量。我们对于未来的影响，我们对于世界的影响——这是世博会想传达的。一种关于人类会演变成什么样的影响，或者是开启一个新的未来关于人类和其对于环境的影响。能看到中国能抓住这个引导我觉得很棒，总有人需要的。（笑）

SA: Thank you so much for, for coming in today and we have seven questions but I’ll ask two. Um, So, the first is: the history of music has forever been a force bringing people together as the common goal.  Now that you are at the world expo 2010 how do you see jazz bridging US - China relations?

HH: Oh, well jazz is famous for functioning in kind of an ambassadorial role throughout the history of jazz and it’s even happened in China before. Various artists that have sort of come here for the Jazz World, DD and I for example.  I think probably thirty or so of us.  Jazz is a language that speaks to people all over the planet. It’s open… and it embraces various cultures because it was created from various, various cultures. So the spirit of jazz is about bringing people together. Even the jazz group is a bunch of people that are brought together as a team, so let’s make the planet a team!

SA: Thanks thank you so much! And the next question: The language of jazz is comprised of the many modes, scales, forms and improvisation allow for a great deal of leeway and “freedom” while chord spelling the changes in a standard chart.   As an American art form, do you think the evolution of jazz is parallels struggle of American people, beginning in 1776 to gain such freedom? Or rather contrary to such?

HH: No, I think Jazz is about… it’s about the ability of the human spirit is to be able to take the worst circumstances and to turn them into something… healing… To turn it into something that is creative and uplifting. There’s a lot of hope.

DDB: oh yes, absolutely.  I feel the same as Herbie.  It’s also music that very liberating, because it is a music that has allowed so many musicians and singers to express themselves in a manner that they otherwise could not. 

DDB: And, I think that’s always been the beauty of this music from its inception as our original art from of the United States until today. The way it’s been embraced around the world is, you know, absolutely incredible. I think that this music really coincides with the message of the Expo, you know?  “Better City, Better Life”, and the fact that we are able to communicate without speaking the same languages around the world is proof that there is always hope for tomorrow that we don’t need to necessarily speak the language that is the same. It’s all about feeling and the heart, yeah.

SD: Just to finish up, do you want to say anything to your Chinese fans you have here in China?

DDB:: I am very humbled by this experience and to have the opportunity to perform with Herbie and to share with the public here in china here in shanghai such a great experience and I think that we all say that the public thought this evening was great .  Every solo, every moment, you could hear someone you know yelling out yeah, yeah, bravo and I think that that’s a very encouraging thing because it means that this is proof that you know that music is so powerful.

HH: I’d like to add that jazz is about sharing and a good feeling from being in China is the hearts of the Chinese people also have this innate sense of sharing, and these are the times when we need to, to share our positive energies. Our concern for the future our concern for the Planet, that’s what this Expo is about; A concern for the sustainability of what human beings will, or, are starting to do to mark the beginning of a new future for humanity and its relationship with the environment. It’s wonderful to see China really grab the lead in this effort.  Somebody needs to, (laughter).

学生大使艾罗碧 / Student Ambassador Robert Irven

我的名字是艾罗碧。 我是从Ringoes，New Jersey来的大四大学生.我的大学也在NJ；叫Rutgers 大学。其实在高中我就开始学中文，因为我觉得学西班牙语很无聊；我要试更新的口语。我生活的地方其实在农村，即使我学中文，没有机会跟中国人练习说中文 。我毕业高中的时候，我认识到中国的重要性越来越大，当时我决定了选择中文和政治专业。Rutgers大学有很多机会认识多样的同学们（要是你不知道，Rutgers在美国大学是最多样的之一），这个情况给我多机会联系说中文。于2009夏天有机会去中国留学到吉林大学，长春（吉林省，近北朝鲜）。留学然后，我真感觉爱学中文，文化和中国人。之后我要找到别的机会回中国 。
 
我无意中找到世博工作的机会，就赶快决定申请。我等待结果的时候，因为不知道世博的信息，开始研究了世博的东西。越看越多，使我很兴奋。多样的国家，文化，口语和人们都在一起的注意很独一无二。更不用说这是最好的城市和国家馆的计划和建筑。对我来说这个机会不但让我练习说中文（还是上海话！），而且让我交不同国家的朋友，也代表我的国家的公民，用多样的方法。除了在美国国家馆工作，去看别的国家馆给我不一样的印象为了他们的文化和关税。在世博村也有很多国际的人，让我们的同事跟他们的人亲密的关系。虽然这个世博给我们几个拥抱，所有的机会还有中国和世界的发展给我们比较好。我觉得自己很幸运参与这样的盛会，也希望可以继续学文化和口语。

My name is Robert Irven and I am a rising senior who is from Ringoes, New Jersey. I also go to school in NJ at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.  I actually began taking Chinese in high school, simply because I was bored with Spanish and wanted to try something new and very different.  My home is actually in a very rural part of NJ so even though I was taking Chinese, I still had very little exposure to China. Upon high school graduation, I began to realize China’s rise and importance in the world and decided to continue it in university, hpping to someday make a career out of it. For those of you who don’t know, Rutgers is one of the most diverse universities in the country, so this enabled me to get a better exposure and helped my Chinese skills grow. In 2009 I had the chance to study abroad through Rutgers in a summer intensive program at Jilin Univ. in Changchun (Jilin Province, near N. Korea border). After that experience, I knew I had truly fallen in love with the language, culture and people. I then began to look for any opportunity that would take me back!
I came upon the Expo opportunity by chance, and just decided to apply and hope for the best. While waiting to hear the results, I began to read up on the Expo as I did not really know what it was. The more I read, the more I became excited. The idea of bringing so many people, cultures and languages together was such a unique and great opportunity. Not to mention the amazing planning and architecture of the city and Expo pavilions. To me, this Expo opportunity not only is allowing me to practice my Chinese skills, it also is allowing me to make new friends from around the world and help represent my country and ideals to a wide variety of people, using a wide variety of methods. Other than simply doing my student ambassadorial duties at the USA Pavilion, visiting other pavilions and making international friends within the Expo Village (where we live) has allowed me to get very close to other participants and learn things about their cultures that I may not have been able to simply at work. Although this Expo has presented its challenges in many ways, the opportunities it is giving to all participants and the development it represents for China and the world economy are one of a kind. I feel so lucky to be able to be a part of such an event  and hope to continue to learn as much as I already have!
