大家好！我叫Chris，中文名字叫毛瑞仁。我是刚毕业的大学生。在纽约市的哥伦比亚大学上学的。我的专业是东亚语言与文化学。 我来自加州的旧金山。我是独生子。父母还是住在旧金山，在旧金山某一条“唐人街” 的附近。从小的时候开始，我经常去那条“唐人街” 逛逛，吃点心，买东西之类的。我有很多华裔的朋友。感受旧金山唐人街的文化，也开始对中国大陆的文化感兴趣了。高中的时候，我学过中国帝王朝代的一些历史，还有学过二十世纪中美关系。同时，从报纸，电视，新闻等媒体渠道，我开始更了解中国目前的经济与社会发展。我就开始思索中国目前的发展如何能接触全球的其他国家。 在哥伦比亚大学，我决定把中国语言与文化作为我的专业。哥伦比亚东亚系的课很多：我学了中国语言，文艺，还有历史。我学了四年的中文。通过哥伦比亚大学夏天的活动，我2 0 0 8年的夏天在北京中央民族大学学了中文二年级的课。我感受到北京奥运会时的气氛，也感受到中央民族大学附近社区的文化。那个社区一条街的饮食文化很丰富多采：有少数民族的餐馆，包括傣族，蒙族，回族的风味，也有中国地方特色的食品，包括山西面包，桂林面条，四川火锅之类的。因为我对住在那个社区的感觉很深，所以我决定一年以后回来那个社区实行调查。我在北京实行调查的同时，也在一家律师事务所实习了。我大学的毕业论文是关于那个社区的饮食与文化的变迁。
刚毕业的时候，我很高兴回来中国感受世博会。我很高兴在美国国家馆的运营部与传播部门工作。这是因为我每天都有机会跟中国人谈话，巩固我的中文。在世博会工作的同时，我开始更了解上海的文化。我觉得不管在北京还是上海，都非常喜欢中国的生活。 Hello everybody! My name is Chris. My Chinese name is “Mao Rui Ren.” I just graduated from Columbia University in the City of New York. My major was East Asian Languages and Cultures. I am from San Francisco, California. I am an only child. My parents still live in San Francisco in the same neighborhood in which I grew up, near one of San Francisco’s famous Chinese shopping streets. Growing up, I often went to that street to shop, eat dim sum, and explore. I have had many Chinese American friends. Experiencing the culture of my neighborhood, I began to take interest in the culture of Mainland China. In high school, I studied the history of China’s dynasties, as well as the 20th Century relations between the U.S. and China. At the same time, I began learning about China’s contemporary cultural and economic development from newspapers and television news. I began to wonder how China’s contemporary development would impact other nations. At Columbia University, I decided to make studying Chinese language and culture my academic focus. Columbia’s East Asian Studies Department offered me many opportunities to study China, whether through literature, art, film, history, and anthropology. Through Columbia’s summer study abroad program, I had the opportunity to study my second year of Chinese at Beijing’s Central University for Nationalities. I had the opportunity to experience the city’s excitement at the time of the Olympics, as well as the opportunity to experience the local flavor of the neighborhood surrounding the Central University for Nationalities. That neighborhood has a shopping street with a particularly vibrant food and restaurant culture, with Dai, Mongolian, and Muslim minority cuisines as well as regional cuisines like Shanxi breads, Guilin noodles, and Sichuan hot pots. Because I was so taken by my experience in that neighborhood, I chose to return the following summer to conduct research on the neighborhood’s food culture. I also interned that summer at a law firm in Beijing’s Central Business District, which gave me a more diversified summer experience. I turned my research from that summer into my senior thesis, focusing on the relationship between neighborhood social change and the current restaurant culture. Having just graduated, I am very happy to return to China to experience the World Expo. With the opportunity to speak Chinese with many different people every day, I am very happy to be working at the USA Pavilion in the Operations and Communications Departments. As I work here at the Expo, I have been able to gain insight into Shanghai’s own city culture. I have realized that Shanghai, like Beijing, is a very interesting and dynamic place to live. |

【2010年9月30日，上海】 2010年上海世博会美国国家馆今天宣布进入美国馆参观的游客人数已突破600万大关。 第600万名幸运游客是来自北京的侍秋文和张晓旺。他们在美国馆门前意外地获得了美国国家馆学生大使们的热情迎接，并获得了美国馆镀金纪念章等礼物。今天是侍秋文和张晓旺的首次世博会之行。 “这一时刻无不令人骄傲。最初我们预估美国馆在世博会六个月期间会接待600万名游客。”美国国家馆展区总代表费乐友大使说道，“但在世博开幕5个月的今天，我们已经迎来了第600万名游客。截止十月底，美国馆总计将接待约700万名游客。我们都热切期待着激动人心而富有纪念意义的十月份的到来。” 作为2010年上海世博会最受观众欢迎的展馆之一，美国馆正保持着日均45,000人次的游客接待量。
SHANGHAI, 30 September 2010] – The USA Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai welcomed its six millionth visitor today. As the six millionth visitor to the USA Pavilion, Shi Qiuwen and Zhang Xiaowang from Beijing, received a USA Pavilion Commemorative Golden Medal and other pavilion memorabilia. They were welcomed by many Student Ambassadors and staff members at the Pavilion from across the United States. This is Shi Qiuwen and Zhang Xiaowang’s first visit to the Expo. “This is a proud moment. At the start, we anticipated the USA Pavilion would welcome around six million guests over the duration of Expo,” said Ambassador José H. Villarreal, U.S. Commissioner General. “Today, however, it gives me great pleasure to announce our six millionth visitor in just five months. The USA Pavilion is currently on track to welcome over seven million visitors and we are eagerly anticipating October which will undoubtedly be an exciting and memorable month.” Being one of the most popular pavilions at Expo 2010, the USA Pavilion has kept a momentum of accommodating 42,000 visitors per day, and is expected to receive more than six million guests over the entire duration of the Expo. 我的名字叫冯杰明，英文名叫Ben Frohman。 我在今年上海世博会的美国馆是一个学生大使。 我出生于美国印帝安纳州的Bloomington城市。我是在Bloomington长大上学，然后2006年搬到了华盛顿DC的乔治城读大学。我读的专业是国际政治，是我学校的外交学院。我今年五月份毕业的，现在来了上海世博会为美国馆工作。 我一共学了四年的中文了，上大学才开始读的。我的汉语大部分是在美国学的，不过也有在中国留学的经验。我第一次来中国就是2007年在安徽皖南当了英文老师，在一个有山有水的小农村呆了一个多月。之后，我在2008年暑假在台北师范大学学习了两个月，很高兴地接触到了两岸的传统文化和两岸的文化区别。我2008年秋季在极为北边的哈尔滨呆了四个月，学会了一些东北话并学会了怎么唱“东北人都是活雷锋。” 我在中国的经历当中最大的欢乐之一就是我在哈尔滨经验的独特环境和生活。 我这次来上海是因为我要在长期开始工作之前度过一段又自由又愉快的时光。我很喜欢探索上海和它周围的环境，也喜欢感受到上海很地道的生活。我和我的学生大使同事在这里玩儿的很开心！
My name is Ben Frohman, and I am a student ambassador at the USA National Pavilion at this year’s Shanghai World Expo. I was born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana (home of the Hoosiers), and went to school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. I majored in International Politics at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. After graduating this past May, I came over to Shanghai to work at the Expo… I have studied Chinese for four years, starting my freshman year at Georgetown. My first time in China was in 2007 when I traveled to the southern part of Anhui Province to teach English for a month in a beautiful mountain village. The next summer in 2008, I lived in Taiwan for two months while studying at Taipei’s National Taiwan Normal University. While in Taiwan, I was happy to be able to experience the differences in lifestyle and Chinese culture on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. In the fall of 2008 I studied in Harbin, China for four months in the far northern reaches of the country. There, I learned some dialect and a great song, “Dongbei’ers are all Living Lei Fengs.” The song doesn’t really translate. I am loving being here in Shanghai before having to go out into the world of long-term employment. I hope to explore more of Shanghai and its surroundings during the rest of my time here, meet more locals and have some fun with my fellow student ambassadors! |

大家好！我叫 Karyn, 中文名字叫林芊如。我是纽约市长大的。是个当地的纽约人，我很重视文化交流。 我是马萨诸塞州的和丽山大学毕业的。我的专业是亚洲学与佛教学，重点就是中国语言与文化。在2008年,我在北京语言大学留学过的。对北京的印象非常好，但生活在上海的时间长了，也越来越喜欢上上海！ 我对中国文化感浓厚的兴趣。我的母亲是香港人，父亲是法国人。但是他们却是美国长大的。他们结婚了以后，生的孩子就是文化交流的代表！我的母亲很激励我，是因为她升过文化差异。她青春时升过文化差异又难又慢。当时新来的移民的机会没有目前多。但因为我妈还在学习也很努力地工作，所以还能够现实她的“美国梦想” 。我的生活真的比较幸福，可是我不应该淡忘她本来的辛苦。我学习和工作得很努力是为了让妈妈觉得骄傲。 虽然人们的文化与生活方式有很多不一样的，但他们还是能拥抱同样的核心价值。如一个人能升过文化差异，他就能跟各种个样的人做朋友，从而让他的生活更美好。作为美国的多样化，纽约就能做成个代表城市。因为我学校同学与朋友的背景有各种各样的，所以我有许多机会能了解他们的文化，比如吃他们文化里的特色菜，听他们父母说的语言，之类的。我觉得这些经历让了我成为一个很开放的人。
世博会是一个很特别的活动。它让国际关系更好，也给了我机会让我的经验变得更丰富。在世博会我们可以体验全球国家的文化。如能更了解其他国家的文化，就能让把虚假刻板印象丢了。但时间过得很快—在一个月内世博会就结束了！我希望通过我在美国馆做学生大使得经历能利用很多机会跟其他国家馆的人做文化交流。我想通过这个活动可以给游客与其他的员工介绍我的多元化价值。 Hello everyone! My name is Karyn, and my Chinese name is “Lin Qianru.” I grew up in New York City. As a New Yorker, I am very passionate about cross-cultural exchange. I just graduated from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, where I majored in East Asian Studies and Buddhist Studies, focusing my attention on Chinese language and culture. In 2008 I studied abroad at Beijing Languages University. Beijing certainly left a good lasting impression on me, but the longer I am in Shanghai, the more I like it! I am very interested in Chinese culture. My mother is from Hong Kong, and my father is from France. However, both of them grew up in New York City. The fact that they got married and had children is a testament to cultural exchange. My mother inspires me because she was able to overcome cultural barriers. When she was younger, overcoming cultural barriers was not easy. At that time, opportunities for new immigrants were fewer and farther between than they are now. However, because she studied and worked hard, she was able to realize her “American Dream.” I know that my life has been more privileged, but I also know that I should not forget the struggles she faced. The reason that I study and work as hard as I do is to make my mother proud. Although people’s cultures and lifestyles may be different, I believe that we can all still embrace the same core values. If a person can overcome cultural barriers, he or she will be able to make friends with all kinds of people, thereby making his life more fulfilling. New York City is, of course, America’s melting pot. Because I went to school with people from so many different backgrounds, I was able to learn about a number of new cultures, through eating their specialty foods and hearing the languages they spoke at home. I think these cross-cultural experiences have made me a much more open-minded and interesting person. The Shanghai World Expo is a very special opportunity. It has the ability to improve relations between different countries of the world. It also has the ability to provide me an opportunity to enhance my own knowledge of the world. At the Expo, we can experience different cultures of the world. If one can increase their understanding of other cultures, he or she will be able to put aside all the stereotypes that alienate people from different countries and cultures. However, the Expo is going by quickly—in one month it will be over! I hope that through my experience at the USA Pavilion as a Student Ambassador, I will be able to seize many opportunities to engage with people from other pavilions and countries in cross-cultural exchange. Through these instances of cross-cultural, I hope to share with visitors and fellow Expo workers alike my passion for cultural diversity. |

学生大使: 马丽安 在上海世博会工作给我带来很多的良好机会去学习世界很多的国家，不过据我的经验所得，如果你真的想要了解一个地方而没有机会身临其境的话，那么最好的办法就是在它世博会的展馆里工作一天。昨天我为了美国馆和省市馆的交流活动走进了江苏省馆，可当时的我除了去过苏州和南京之外，我对那地区的了解极为缺少。不过，经过代表江苏豪华文化和源远流长的历史的一天之后，我感觉到我对这个地区的文化，艺术及名胜古迹，尤其是当地人民的性格，的了解都有所升高。 我和我的学生大使同事Michael在开始工作之前得到展馆的专门导游。江苏省馆是省市馆当中最有动力性之一，展示着江苏的传统戏剧和艺术，还有它崭新的太阳能及生物医疗技术。展馆的一大特点就是可以让游客观看南京以及在江苏另外一些很有名的城市的现场录像的“信息之树。”在电脑屏幕上打一个号码就可以控制南京城门上的装饰电灯。这个游戏使人很容易上瘾，所以请慎重地进行！展馆还设置着一些博物馆的展品，比如古老的梳套及江苏省其他一些在以前的世博会展示过的装饰品。
在省市馆的餐厅吃午饭也是个能够学习的经验。来自各个省市馆的工作人员都穿着各种不同的传统服装，给我们带来了进一步学到不同中国少数民族的良好机会。看着一些工作人员穿着美丽丝绸的旗袍排队拿饭其实有点感觉奇特搞笑呢！我们吃完午饭之后，得到了专门导游带我们游览上海，浙江和西藏的展馆。我们在西藏馆里面看到艺术家画着传统的佛教墙画，在浙江馆品尝了杭州的茶叶，然后在上海馆体验了一个很刺激的使我以暂时地当一位“上海人”为傲的经历。 当到了我们离开展馆的时候，我很乐意地跟我新的来自江苏省的朋友交换电话号码，甚至连一些徽章也交换了。我对江苏的认识比一天之前扩大了，并让我急不及待地等待着去江苏省的机会。在江苏展馆工作给了我他人不会看到的展馆的另外一面的良好机会，还给我吸取了很多别的展馆如何运营的教训。我绝对建议我在美国馆的同事参与这种文化交流活动，还建议大家一定要去参观江苏省馆！ Student Ambassador: Mary Anne McElroy If you want to really learn about a place without going there, the best way is to work in its pavilion. Walking into the Jiangsu Province Pavilion for yesterday’s USAP/China Provincial Exchange program, I knew little about Jiangsu other than what I’d seen in the beautiful water town Suzhou and the historical Nanjing. Walking out of the pavilion after a day of representing the province’s rich culture and history, I feel almost like an expert in Jiangsu’s special arts, landmarks, and more importantly the character of its people. Student Ambassador Michael and I began the day with a special tour of the pavilion given by our new coworkers. Our tour was much more detailed than your average pavilion tour, even your average VIP tour, one of the benefits of the exchange program. The pavilion is one of the most dynamic of the provincial pavilions, showcasing Jiangsu traditional opera, arts, its many parks, and also its modern solar and biomedical technology. A great feature of the pavilion is the “Tree of Information”, which allows you to watch live footage of Nanjing and other famous towns in Jiangsu. Calling a number on the computer screen actually controls the decorative light switches on Nanjing’s gate. It is very addicting, therefore I would advise to cut out while you can. The pavilion also has several museum pieces, such as an old a comb set and other decorative items, that were featured in previous World Expos
Lunch at the Chinese Provincial Pavilion cafeteria was also a learning experience. The staff members from different pavilions were all in various traditional costumes, which gave us the chance to inquire further about different Chinese minority groups. It was kind of funny to see some of them waiting in line for food in beautiful silk embroidered Qi Paos! After lunch, we went on a special tour of the Shanghai, Zhezhiang and Tibet pavilions. In the Tibetan Pavilion we saw an artist painting a traditional Buddhist mural, in Zhezhiang we sipped tea from Hangzhou, and in Shanghai we took a thrilling ride which made me very proud to be a temporary, if only for three months, “Shanghai-Ren”. When it was time for us to go, I was happy to exchange numbers with my new Jiangsu friends and even a pin here and there. My knowledge of Jiangsu Province is much broader than what it was the day before, and I can’t wait for some days off to go visit the actual province. Working at the pavilion gave me a chance to see the pavilion from a side most people wouldn’t and taught me a lot about how other pavilions work. I would definitely recommend the exchange program to my USAP colleagues as well as a visit to the Jiangsu Pavilion! |
