My name is Michael Lom and I am a recent graduate of UCLA. Now a Student Ambassador for the USA Pavilion, I feel very fortunate to be part of such a talented team and staff, who have come to experience China in a new and different context—as participants of Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. I applied to the Student Ambassador internship to experience China while the World Expo is here. I already resolved to return to China after graduation. The Student Ambassador Internship offered me the opportunity to work in Shanghai while being a part of a massive platform to establish stronger cultural and diplomatic exchanges between the USA and other nations. In short, it was my ticket back to the Middle Kingdom, Zhongguo. I have always been fascinated with China. My studies in Chinese language and culture began at UCLA, which later transformed into a year studying abroad in Shanghai and Beijing. Though I am Chinese-American and had the opportunity to study various aspects of China in college, China proved to be a unique and dynamic environment. I will never forget my first and last experiences while in China last year: my shifu, the cab driver. Speeding and swerving down the freeway from Pudong Airport to the hotel, my shifu cut off every single car that stood in his way. On the day I left Beijing, my shifu missed the exit for the airport and thus decided to reverse backward to the ramp he had passed. Thankfully, I survived. Such shocks of cultural divergence no longer surprise me. China no longer seems strange, but has a more familiar feel. I look forward to representing the United States of America to Chinese and visitors alike at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. |

赞助商家庭日的魔术 / The Magic of Sponsor Family Day Posted: 26 Aug 2010 07:52 PM PDT 学生大使:林娜 小孩子们喜欢魔术,这是一个既定的事实。
Student Ambassador: Selina Strasburger It’s a given fact that every child loves magic, and few things are more magical than instant photos and Disney. While it may not have been Disney World, the USA Pavilion became a magical place of its own in celebration of USA Pavilion Sponsor Family Day. USA Pavilion’s Sponsor, Disney, providing the entertainment and Fujifilm Instax cameras, our job as student ambassadors was to help capture the fun in snapshots of the children and families in attendance. I’ve always loved instant photos, since they capture a moment in time in a way that digital cameras aren’t able to.
As the event came to a close, and our visitors headed downstairs to go through the pavilion show with their gift bags filled by many of our sponsors in tow, the student ambassadors had the chance to turn the camera around, and with clown noses, painted faces, and smiles, we snapped pictures of each other and created our own instant memories of a morning that was filled with laughter, families, and magic. |
