As Walmart enters, Nigerians may still be last to notice new, viable Nigeria
By Ken Okorie
Special to USAfrica multimedia networks, Houston & Abuja

To my mind, Walmart going to NIgeria should be welcomed as a very positive message that the world is beginning to take Nigeria seriously and accept us as a viable, stable economy once again.  Nigeria used to enjoy such status.  We used to have Kingsway Stores, Kaycee Chellarams, Kewalarams, JT Chanrais and branches of other foreign department stores and stores.  Those are reminders of a Nigeria that was cherished by its citizens and respected by the world; a Nigeria that had lots of vibrance and promise.  That was before the war, and before military dictators and their fellow men in uniform messed the whole place up....

USAfrica: With little to show for years in office, Anambra Gov. Peter Obi takes to advertising hollow accomplishments. By Prof. Okey Ndibe.

Special to CLASSmagazine, USAfricaonline.com , PhotoWorks.TV and the USAfrica-powered e-groups of  IgboEventsAnambraPolitics, Nigeria360 and UNNalumni.

Mr. Peter Obi’s undoing – apart from the aforementioned paucity of imagination – lies in his increasing confidence that propaganda is a substitute for solid governance and verifiable achievements....
With little to show for his years so far in office, the governor has taken to trumpeting and advertising hollow accomplishments. His signature “accomplishment” is the tarring of 500 kilometers of roads. Missing in that claim – assuming the accuracy of the figure – is the poor quality of the roads. Last June, I traveled on Ifite road in Awka, one of the most recently tarred roads, and an important traffic artery that leads to the state-owned university. Despite the recentness of its construction, the road was already filled with potholes....

In fact the state capital, Awka, is so rundown and wretched that it would do war-ravaged Mogadishu no credit at all. What’s clear is that the governor believes his image to constitute aesthetic asset. Wherever you turn in the state capital, you’re bound to see some billboard, always with an image of Mr. Obi’s face. Some billboards carry cheap exhortations. Most tout the governor’s ostensible accomplishments. And what are these achievements? In one, Mr. Obi boasts of distributing 10,000 computers to schools and communities. In another, that he has provided some transformers. One was compelled to ask, what kind of computers? Did Mr. Obi ensure that the recipient schools have Internet access? Do they have qualified computer technicians? Do they even have electric power?

A pattern that seems to define Mr. Obi’s approach to governance is a relentless pursuit of the elephantine but hollow project. With fanfare he invited President Goodluck Jonathan to commission the Kenneth Onwuka Dike e-library in Awka. But there’s neither a single book nor computer in that so-called library. During my visit in June, the building was skirted by overgrown bush. Looking at the sign announcing the library, one was amazed. Does an empty building become a library – an e-library, for that matter – simply because a governor named it as one?

USAfrica toast to Ambassador Joy Ogwu's many distinctions.                        By Dr. Chido Nwangwu

USAfrica, Houston, August 22, 2011: Uche Joy Ogwu, distinguished Professor of international relations, diplomat, extraordinary daughter, wife, mother,  grand-mother, role model, community builder and active global citizen is leaving, daily, marks of a productive life.
I think that Prof. Ogwu reflects the organic marriage of intellection and practicality; idealism and commonsense. Today is her birthday, as she was born August 22, 1946 --  hence, my privilege as Publisher of USAfrica to make a comment or two about this pace-setting woman of uncommon substance and, yes, of effortless, graceful beauty.

First, the body of work and records of Ambassador Ogwu's stellar achievements and pioneering distinctions in Nigeria's foreign service and currently at the United Nations in New York have set her on a path of deserving recognition.
USAfricaonline.com notes, currently, that for the first time in the history of the Security Council of the United Nations, there are three women permanent representatives/ambassadors, namely: for the United States of America is Prof. Susan Rice, Brazil's Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti and Nigeria's Ogwu.

Second,  she represents and embodies the fact that our women and girls are capable of high achievements in their areas of interests, no matter the odds.

This is a very relevant angle to her value especially to this age/generation where there are more young girls trying to be like Lady Gaga, Desperate Chicks and Beyonce than professors of mathematical sciences and international relations. Prof. Ogwu has grown in stature and dedication as a role model for millions of younger Nigerians and persons of African heritage, and others who have read and encountered her scholarship and diplomats. In my view, she's a diplomatic superstar who shines with other leaders of the world like U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Third, I believe that Prof. Ogwu, a savvy and seasoned woman of significant intellectual and practical substance, is a history maker.  She's Nigeria's first female Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Nations (her current job), announced in April 2008....

USAfrica: Anambra Gov. Obi is a rare gem; accusation of  "hollow achievements" is misplaced.

Special to USAfricaonline.com

http://www.usafricaonline.com/2011/08/26/anambra-gov-obi-is-a-rare-gem-accusation-of-hollow-achievements-is-misplaced/

Okey Ndibe, a professor and reputed writer, should command serious attention each time he puts pen on paper.  He missed his mark in his recent critique of the accomplishments of the Governor of Anambra State of Nigeria Peter Obi, published on USAfricaonline.com:
With little to show for years in office, Anambra Gov. Peter Obi takes to advertising hollow accomplishments. http://www.usafricaonline.com/2011/08/16/anambra-gov-peter-obi-advertising-hollow-accomplishments-by-okey-ndibe/

Rather than draw constructive attention, Prof. Ndibe make some of us question his objectivity in his condemnation of the record and performance of the Governor.  With a commentary accusing him of advertising “hollow accomplishments”, you (Prof. Ndibe), betray a disposition to first take from the governor every credit earned before you, unwarrantedly, nail him.

USAfrica: African Union bungles Libya crisis; refuses to recognize transition council.

By Chido Nwangwu

USAfrica, August 26, 2011: The African Union, the continent wide organization, has rejected the broad acceptance of Libyan rebels and the opposition forces who have uprooted the government of the mercurialleader Muammar Ghadafi.

The leaders of the AU's  Peace and Security Council meeting in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa declined accepting the National Transitional Council (NTC) of Liby as the legitimate representatives of the country -- demanding, instead for what it called a 'consensual and inclusive government.'

USAfrica understands that the main backer of the pro-Ghadafi stance is South Africa's President Jacob Zuma  who is arguing that "There is a process in Libya wherein the NTC forces are in the process of taking over Tripoli...but there is still that fighting going on. So, we can't therefore stand and say this is the legitimate one now." Nigeria is among the other set of African countries who took the side of the NTC.
Ethiopia has supported the NTC, stating: "We ask the African Union and its members to be consistent by extending to the NTC the type of support and recognition that was extended to Tunisia and Egypt."

Libya's Ghadafi served as a major donor to the AU, and to several African Union leaders' country needs.
Despite the opposition from some members of the AU, the Libyan people led by the NTC seem determined to forge ahead.
Ali Tarhouni, acting finance and oil minister for the rebel council has said today that  it is Ghadafi who is on the losing end: "He (Gadhafi) is the one who is basically in the sewer - moving from one sewer to another…. I proclaim the beginning of the work of the executive office in a free Tripoli as of this moment. Long live democratic and constitutional Libya. We can start rebuilding our country."

As at the time of this USAfricaonline.com at 6pm Friday August 26, 2011 (CST), a pocketful of resistance soldiers from the Ghadafi camp especially in his hometown are putting up some effort against the overpowering effort of the NTC backed by NATO technical, air support and military team.

USAfrica's chats with key African diplomats inside Africa, Washington DC and New York convey a private but popular position: Ghadafi is history and the AU's status quo leaders are on the wrong side of history.                                                                                                                               •Chido Nwangwu serves as Founder & Publisher of USAfrica multimedia networks, Houston. A few hours ago, today, Tuesday September 13, 2011, the social media, twitter and Facebook and sms remained misled on several personal, non-institutional pages by the false report that the great statesman, former President of South Africa and Nobel laureate Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was dead.
Like many media executives, I was equally curious, as several inquiries to confirm or dismiss the stories came into USAfrica (Houston). I did, like several senior editors of USAfrica, call several sources across the U.S., London and South Africa, gingerly on the sensitive ‘story’– but without any credible affirmation.
The first and credible direct response to the false reports have been sourced by the South African Broadcasting Service (SABC) which spoke with The Nelson Mandela Foundation — particularly Mandela’s personal assistant, Zelda la Grange. According to the SABC, she “says there is no reason to worry.”
USAfricaonline.com is aware that the only credible report about any one named Mandela being ill regards Nelson Mandela’s former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
On Saturday September 10, she was admitted to the Life Brenthurst Clinic in Parktown in Johannesburg for a minor operation/surgery on her foot .
In 2010, during a medical treatment of Nelson Mandela, another round of false stories about his mortality were spread by a few individuals. He has been treated variously for tuberculosis (from his jail period), prostate cancer and eye problems.
Dr. Mandela was born at Qunu, near Umtata, in the Transkei area of South Africa on July 18, 1918, to Chief Henry Mandela, a member of the Tembu ethnic group.
A major historical date in his life took place on June 12, 1964, when Nelson Mandela, alongside 7 other activists and anti-apartheid freedom fighters were unjustly sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, a few minutes from Cape Town. (He was later moved to the Pollsmoor Prison); and was released after 27 years of incarceration in 1990.
I’ll forever remember having walked inside and peeped through that historic Mandela jail cell at the dreaded Robben Island on March 27, 1998, alongside then Editor-in-chief of TIME magazine and later news chief of CNN, Walter Isaacson (and others) when President Bill Clinton made his first trip to South Africa and came to Robben Island. Mandela is 92: Why I celebrate his life, struggles and works. By Chido Nwangwu.
The truth is we revere and honor Mandela at USAfrica.

In fact, one of our publications, USAfrica The Newspaper, was established to make its first release just in time in May 1994 in Houston, to be part of the voices and pillars of progress against apartheid, a news vehicle championing the pan-human quest for justice and equity for all, and as The Authoritative Link for Africans in the diaspora –especially across the U.S .
Permit me to say: Long Live Madiba. Long Live Mandela!                                                                                                                 • Dr. Chido Nwangwu, Founder & Publisher of USAfrica multimedia networks, first African-owned, U.S-based newspaper published on the internet USAfricaonline.com;  recipient of several journalism and public policy awards, was recently profiled by the CNN International for his pioneering works on multimedia/news/public policy projects for Africans and Americans. http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/international/2010/07/29/mpa.african.media.bk.a.cnn

I met Prof. Njoku, born on June 16, 1946, for the first time during his research work on the Arochukwu heritage in 2006 in Houston, Texas.
He is an associate Professor at the Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He recently established the West African Cultural Heritage Education and Training (WACHET) Institute in Bowling Green. The following are excerpts from my September 15, 2011 exclusive interview with him for USAfrica and CLASSmagazine on the Igbo Farm Village project in Staunton in Virginia, which he has championed.

Chido Nwangwu/USAfrica: Congratulations for your dedication and work on the Igbo Farm Village in Staunton, Virginia. On this first anniversary of the Igbo Farm Village this weekend of September 17, 2011, may I respectfully ask that you share with the readers of USAfrica, USAfricaonline.com and IgboEvents  the major significance of this historic project?
Njoku: Thank you very much for this opportunity to share with your broad readership the joy and excitement I feel about the first anniversary of the Igbo Farm Village at Staunton, Virginia.  The Igbo Farm Village, it is important to mention, is a part of the American Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia established to acknowledge the contributions of the Old World cultures to the development of the American frontier culture, which began from Virginia.
The American Frontier Culture Museum had already constructed four other farmsteads (in Igbo, that will translate to Ulo Ubi)—the English Farm, the Irish Farm, the German Farm, and a Colonial American Farm—before building the Igbo Farm Village.  Therefore, the Igbo Farm Farm Village is a tangible recognition of the African (especially those from West Africa) who, though forced to migrate to the New World, helped to build, prosper, and populate what is now known as the United States of America starting from the 1700s.  That, in a nutshell, is the historical significance of the Igbo Farm Village.

What does it mean for the  youth of the Igbo nation, and the African-American communities?

USAfrica: 2 African women co-winners of 2011 Nobel Peace Prize with Yemeni journalist
By Nina Larson
Photograph: Alex Wong/Getty, Frederick M Brown/Getty, Khaled Abdullah/Reuters-via-Guardian-London
AFP/Oslo: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, her compatriot and “peace warrior” Leymah Gbowee and Yemen’s Arab Spring activist Tawakkul Karman won the Nobel Peace Prize Friday in a nod to women’s empowerment.
The three women will share the 2011 award “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work,” Norwegian Nobel Committee president Thorbjoern Jagland said.
Sirleaf, 72, made history when she became Africa’s first elected woman president in 2005, taking over a nation traumatised by 14 years of civil war that left 250,000 dead.
Sirleaf dedicated her Nobel to “all Liberian people,” but her rival in next Tuesday’s presidential elections called the timing of the award provocative and unacceptable because of her involvement with violence in the past.  FULL REPORT here http://www.usafricaonline.com/2011/10/07/2-african-women-co-winners-of-2011-nobel-peace-prize/

CLASSmagazine: NASHVILLE rocked by the IWORAHS' 25TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

By Chido Nwangwu, in Nashville, Tennessee

http://photoworks.tv/classmagazine-iworahs25th-chido2011                                                                                                          The world's country music capital city Nashville witnessed the special event of the 25th Wedding Anniversary bash of Dr. Oscar Iworah and his gracious wife Mrs. Isioma Iworah during the weekend of October 7-9, 2011.

In every sense, it was the event of the year for the African community in the area as family, friends and well-wishers travelled from across the U.S., Europe and Nigeria to join the very friendly Iworahs to celebrate their special day. Oscar's in-laws, the Okpalobis and his own family members were ably represented.

The splendid event had humor-filled Dr. Anthony Ejiofor as lead master of ceremonies and Chief Theo Egbujor "Eze Udo" as event chairman.

CLASSmagazine & USAfrica multimedia networks' Publisher Dr. Chido Nwangwu covered the event and shot almost 1400 compelling images, now, exclusively, on the African diaspora's pictorials mega-sitewww.PhotoWorks.TV

The print feature is scheduled for the special christmas edition of CLASSmagazine.

USAfrica: As the world was informed by the Anambra State Governor Peter Obi that February 2, 2012 will be the burial of the former leader of the defunct Republic of Biafra Ikemba Nnewi Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, another major omission of Igbo tradition and Nnewi heritage protocol seemed to have been made: the failure to allow  the immediate family, kith and kin of the Ikemba to, formally, inform the traditional ruler (Igwe) of Nnewi about the iconic leader's death.

Consequently, the first son of the Ikemba, Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Jr. has issued  a statement from Nigeria's capital of Abuja seeking and assuring the need to fulfill Nnewi and Igbo tradition. He stated unequivocally, that the  the Ojukwu family promises the Igbo nation and the Ikemba's well-wishers that  "we will ensure that their hero, the late Eze Igbo Gburugburu is buried in a manner that is right, deserving and befitting for a man of his stature."

SHOWDOWN: U.S. homosexuals resident in Nigeria will be prosecuted, says presidency.

By Chido Nwangwu
Special to USAfricaonline.com

The Political Adviser to Nigeria's President, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak has warned that the anti-homosexual bill passed by Nigeria's parliament will be enforced and has to be obeyed by all persons who come into Nigeria, especially Americans: "This is Nigerian law; it is not American law and if you are an American and you come to Nigeria, you must subject yourself to our law and if you are caught violating this law or any other law, you will be prosecuted accordingly."

On Monday December 12, 2012 in Abuja, Gulak added that: "No community in this country supports same sex marriage. I have not had any community in Nigeria that supports gay or lesbianism or what have you. So, our laws are for our country and not for the Americans…. If Americans like, they can go and be marrying themselves as men and women; that is their problem, that is their culture, but in Nigeria, our laws are that no same sex can marry; we have said no to same sex marriage. And if you are discovered to have done that, there is a penalty for that".

Summary: IF any of the Nigerian President’s 100 advisers has the polite courage for the extraordinary task of reminding His Excellency of his foremost, sworn, constitutional obligation to the national interest about security and safety of Nigerians and all who sojourn in Nigeria, please whisper clearly to Mr. President that I said, respectfully: Nigerians, at home and abroad, are still concerned and afraid for living in what I call Nigeria’s Federal Republic of Insecurity!

USAfrica, December 17, 2011: As the year 2011 draws down and we embrace the promise of 2012, a recurring concern for Nigerians and the international communities remains: are we safe going about our every day lives or investing to do business in most parts of Nigeria?

First, is your quiet, unspoken prayer as you head to your village or run a small business in Maiduguri, Kano, Aba, Damataru, Yobe, Kaduna, Yenagoa, Bayelsa, Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Uyo, Jos one of the following: may the evil eyes and bazooka of kidnappers not see me; and, may the lethal bombs of the violent agitators of Boko Haram, MEND and others set their gps in the same zone I may go… Amen!

Second, amidst all the palaver, Nigerians continue to wonder if their federal state of insecurity would continue into 2012, despite the fact of a whopping federal government budget of N4.749 trillion (Naira) — the equivalent of $30.64 billion — with the security and defense allocation bagging the lion’s share of N921.21 billion (Naira) — the equivalent of $5.9478 billion.

Third and sadly, the official allocation of security votes/budget and the personal, discretionary set aside slush funds also called “security” votes have not given Nigerians reasonable “security” from kidnappers, common criminals, terror brigands, radical fundamentalists like the brazen Boko Haram and a rag-tag ethnic armies, area boys and area girls, and so on and so forth.

Fourth, Nigerians, from all sections and faiths and economic status, have expressed their displeasure at the evident incapacity of the federal government led by President Jonathan and state governors to perform the most basic function of providing security and safe environments for the citizens. The unrelenting bombs and violent attacks and kidnappings from the Niger Delta (specifically, Bayelsa State – Jonathan’s home state) to the middle belt Plateau State areas of Damataru/Jos and now more dramatic in Maiduguri/Borno State, have combined to make life and movement much more dangerous for families, millions of unemployed youths and investors in Africa’s most populated country of almost 110 million people.

Fifth, I believe and have made the political economy point that lawlessness and insecurity affect domestic production and international business worthiness of any country. The recent, very bold attacks on the Nigerian Police headquarters and the United Nations building in Abuja (Nigeria’s federal capital) on Friday August 26, 2011 by the radical Islamic group Boko Haram left a weak profile of the President Jonathan and his team — in the eyes of the local and international communities. I wrote the  USAfrica special report 10 years ago– on October 17, 2001 – warning that some radical Islamic groups in Nigeria have some level of inspiration and informal links to international terror organizations. Nigeria’s bin-Laden cheerleaders could ignite religious war, destabilize Africa.

Sixth, this special extraordinary budget item, in itself, a remarkable mockery and Orwellian twist called “security vote.”  For the rookie and uninitiated in Nigeria’s political business, “security votes” are not accounted for; you spend and use it for whatever you decide as an elected official or political  appointee as rising to the level of “security” interest. They are Not part of the accounting for Statutory security allocations to the Police and related security agencies.  Nigeria’s President, the Governors and the key national parliamentary leaders (Senate President & Speaker of the House), from my sources, in that order — get the highest allocation of “security” votes/budget. Note, too, that the President, Governors (and USAfrica learned a long time ago that local government officials and ministers and some legislators) have juicy budgets/allocations of several monthly millions for this famous and much sought after “security votes.”

Finally, if any of the President’s 100 advisers has the polite courage for the extraordinary task of reminding His Excellency of his foremost, sworn, constitutional obligation to the national interest about security and safety of Nigerians and all who sojourn in Nigeria, please whisper clearly to Mr. President that I said, respectfully: Nigerians, at home and abroad, are still concerned and afraid for living in what I call Nigeria’s Federal Republic of Insecurity! Nigeria, we hail thee….                                                                                                                           •Dr. Chido Nwangwu, Founder & Publisher of Houston-based USAfrica multimedia networks, first African-owned, U.S-based newspaper published on the internet USAfricaonline.com;  and recipient of several journalism and public policy awards, was recently profiled by the CNN International for his pioneering works on multimedia/news/public policy projects for Africans and Americans. Nigeria's President declares state of emergency in parts of northern region
Special to USAfricaonline.com,  the USAfrica-powered e-groups of  Nigeria360,  UNNalumni, and CLASSmagazine Houston

USAfrica, Houston: Sandwiched by the potential for a dangerous religious war and ethnically complicated conflict, Nigeria's embattled President Goodluck Jonathan has declared, a few minutes ago today Saturday December 31, 2011, a state of emergency on some local governments of northern Nigeria where factions of the radical and violent Islamic group Boko Haram.
The President said that "I have in the exercise in the powers conferred on me ... declared a state of emergency in the following parts of the federation…. "The temporary closure of our borders in the affected areas is only an interim measure designed to address the current security challenges and will be resumed as soon as normalcy is restored", -- an apparent reference to the December 25, 2011 Christmas Day bombings of churches by the Boko Haram.
The President has come under criticisms for what many Nigerians considered his  inadequate and non-satisfactory handling of the security problems facing the country of about 160 million people.

DEATH BY HANGING demanded for Egypt's former President Mubarak for killings of protesters

By Chido Nwangwu, USAfrica:

"Retribution is the solution… Any fair judge must issue a death sentence for these defendants…. The prosecution demands the maximum penalty against Mubarak and the rest of the accused which is death by hanging." So demanded Egyptian prosecutor Mustafa Khater, on Thursday, January 5, 2012, at the trial of Egypt’s former president and dictator, former General Hosni Mubarak. He is 83 years old, and currently in a hospital.
Mubarak has been on trial alongside his sons, Gamal and Alaa, his security chief, the former Interior minister, and six top police commanders regarding the death of more than 800 people during the 18-day protests against his rule and before he was ousted in a popular uprising in February, 2011. Thousands of others, as reported at the time here at USAfricaonline.com, were severely injured and arrested by soldiers and police, acting on the final, general orders of Mubarak. He denied giving such orders.
The prosecution rejected claims that Mubarak was not informed of the seriousness of the situation by his security aides.
“The president of the republic is responsible for protecting the people, and the question is not simply one of whether he ordered the killing of protesters, but to know why he did not intervene to stop the violence,” argued the chief prosecutor Mustafa. He continued with a query: "How could the president of the republic not be aware of the demonstrations that broke out on January 25 in 12 places in several governorates?"

Escalation as suspected Islamists kill 6 at Deeper Life Church in Gombe.
The increasing break down of law and order across parts of northern Nigeria continued as gunmen stormed a church on Thursday, January 5, 2012, and killed six people as they were praying, the pastor said. This followed as an ultimatum from Islamists of Boko Haram for Southern Nigerians and Christians in the region to leave the region expired.
“It was around 7:30 pm (1830 GMT),” John Jauro told AFP of the attack in the city of Gombe.
“I was leading the congregation in prayers. Our eyes were closed when some gunmen stormed the church and opened fire on the congregation. Six people were killed in the attack and 10 others were wounded.”

In another brazen move to fuel ethnic and religious conflicts in Nigeria, as agitated for and executed by factions of the  radical, violent Islamist sect Boko Haram, some masked Nigerian gunmen on a mission specifically to  "target Igbos" have killed at least 10 members of the christian Igbo community in Mubi, located in the north-eastern section of Nigeria.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - An industrial court in Nigeria ordered unions Friday to stop a planned nationwide strike over spiraling gasoline prices, giving authorities legal power to break up any work stoppages by labor groups.

Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and Bekederemo-Clark warn Nigeria to "let not this fire spread."

Special to USAfricaonline.com,  the USAfrica-powered e-groups of  Nigeria360,  UNNalumni, and CLASSmagazine Houston

USAfrica: Three among Nigeria's leading writers, distinguished Professors Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and J.P. Bekederemo-Clark have weighed into the escalating issues of economic hardship, withdrawal of fuel-petroleum subsidies, Boko Haram violence and insecurity in Nigeria.
They have warned about the dangers of allowing the problems to escalate into another civil war -- a reminder of the 1967-1970 events which led to the deaths of almost 2 million Igbos/Ibibios/Efiks/SouthEasterners and thousands of other Nigeria. Their statement is titled: Let Not this fire spread!! An Appeal to the Nigerian Nation Community.

USAfrica publishes their statement:
“The fears we have all secretly nursed are coming to realisation. The nightmare we have hugged to our individual breasts, voicing them only in family privacy, or within trusted caucuses of friends and colleagues – lest they become instances of materialising evil thoughts – has finally burst through into our social, physical environment. Rumblings and veiled threats have given way to eruption, and the first cracks in the wall of patience and forbearance can no longer be wished away.

Boko Haram is very likely celebrating its first tactical victory: provoking retaliation in some parts of the nation.
We insist however that this need not be, and should not be so. And as long as any part, however minuscule, opts for the more difficult path of envisioned forbearance, we are convinced that its responses will find neighbour emulation between homesteads, between towns and villages, between communities on all levels and indeed – states. This hard, demanding, but profoundly moral and heroic option will be recognised and embraced as the only option for the survival, and integrity of the whole. All who claim to be leaders must lead – but in the right direction! FULL text here

USAfrica: Jonathan asked to act urgently on prosecuting sponsors of Boko Haram's genocidal violence; demands Igbo American Alliance Against Genocide group

Special to USAfricaonline.com,  the USAfrica-powered e-groups of  Nigeria360,  UNNalumniIgboEvents and CLASSmagazine Houston

USAfricaonline.com January 10, 2012: The rising demand and voices demanding more decisive and urgent action by Nigeria's President Jonathan to tackle the sponsoring foundations of the radical, violent Islamic group Boko Haram has added those of the Igbo American Alliance Against Genocide (IAAAG), the U.S-based international group of African and American professionals.
In a news release to USAfrica and the IgboEvents e-group, the international group noted that it "has followed and monitored with concern and revulsion, the violent and bloody recent events in Africa's most populated, multi-religious country, Nigeria." They called "on the Presidents and governments of Nigeria and the United States to act, without further delay, to do much more by arresting and prosecuting the sponsors and patrons of the evil, targeted killings of members of the south eastern Nigerian Igbo and other christians by the radical, terroristic Islamic group Boko Haram in parts of northern Nigeria."
The Igbo American Alliance Against Genocide added that the government of Nigeria, the United States and the International Court at the Hague should coordinate efforts to prosecute those who aid and sponsor and justify the targeted killings with possible genocidal implications. We implore the Governors and local government leaders in the areas of violence in Nigeria to be mindful that the international community and agencies especially the Igbo American Alliance Against Genocide (IAAAG) are watching and monitoring.

Soyinka warns Nigeria is "heading towards a civil war"

Writer, playwright, essayist, activist and Africa's first Nobel laureate in literature (in 1986) has warned that he sees the rising tension and set of violence by the radical, violent Islamic group Boko Haram as leaving him one conclusion: We see the nation heading towards a civil war…. It is going that way. We no longer can pretend it's not…. When you've got a situation where a bunch of people can go into a place of worship and open fire through the windows, you've reached a certain dismal watershed in the life of that nation."
Soyinka made these comments during an interview broadcast a few hours ago by the BBC where he noted that there are similarities between the events of the 1960s which led to the Nigeria-Biafra war (1967-1970). "It's not an unrealistic comparison - it's certainly based on many similarities."

He added during the interview that "There are people in power in certain parts of the country, leaders, who quite genuinely and authoritatively hate and cannot tolerate any religion outside their own."

Only 4 days ago, he issued a joint statement with the great writer Prof. Chinua Achebe and Prof. John Bekederemo-Clark (published here on USAfricaonline.com titled: Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka and Bekederemo-Clark warn Nigeria to "let not this fire spread." http://www.usafricaonline.com/2012/01/08/achebe-soyinka-clark-nigeria-let-not-this-fire-spread/

USAfrica recalls that although now critical of the direction of the President of Nigeria, Soyinka was a supporter of the April-May 2010 push for then VP of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan to succeed and serve out the term of the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (August 16, 1951 – May 5, 2010).
Prof. Soyinka whose masterful play/drama of 1975 titled Death and the King's Horseman drew global, critical acclaim is a credible and respected voice on Nigeria's public policy issues and human rights matters. By Chido Nwangwu

USAfrica, Houston, Lagos and Abuja: Pastor Tunde Bakare, retired Gen. Buhari's Vice Presidential running mate in the 2010 elections and convener of the Save Nigeria Group said  in Lagos:  “In every nation, the sovereignty belongs to the people of the nation. You gave power to Jonathan. He has opened his mouth to say that there is Boko Haram in his bedroom and in his government. He is telling us that he cannot even protect himself…. Any government that lacks competence; any government that is corrupt cannot lead this country. On behalf of the people of Nigeria, we fire Jonathan from office. Jonathan you are fired! I serve quit notice on Jonathan on behalf of the people of this country.”

(AP) — He was unemployed and receiving welfare, but Adekunle Adetiloye was somehow still living lavishly, complete with a Range Rover vehicle, extended trips to England and an expensive condominium.
That alone piqued authorities' interest, but then there were two credit cards tucked away in his wallet that seemed to confirm suspicions that the Canadian man was up to something nefarious. The pieces of plastic each bore different names — Donald Douglas and Vincent Andriole — and helped authorities prosecute a case they describe as one of the largest high-tech bank robberies in U.S. history.
"Characterizing this fraud scheme as massive, if anything, is an understatement," Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick Chase from North Dakota said in court documents.
Adetiloye, 30, was convicted of mail fraud, but authorities believe he masterminded a scheme to open nearly 600 fraudulent bank accounts and bilk 22 major banks out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
