Promoters,

In the last week I’ve had to deal with two promoters posting flyers with errors before final approval.  Please read rule 1E2 and note where it says up to $500 penalty for publication without approval.  I don’t want to have to enforce this rule but I will if this continues.  Please get your race flyer to me early so I have time to go over it.

Please don't do this Al. It's the same shit that Margaret would do
which lead us all (ok, mqny of us at least) to want her gone. There
are rules that are good for the sport and there are rules that are
really just plain detrimental for the sport here in podunk NM. Pretty
good patience is needed from authorities in small and still somewhat
fledging communities like ours.

Hopefully constructive criticism,

Cliff,

I don't want to fine anybody but I also don't want to spend most of my time
answering emails about problems on flyers that have not been approved, like
I was doing last week. I'm self-employed and I can't spend all of my
billable hours taking care of USAC & NMBRA business. Remember, I don't get
paid for doing this, I'm doing it because I love this sport and I want to
see cycling grow in New Mexico.

All I am asking is that instead of waiting until the last minute promoters
get their flyers to me early so I can look them over before they are posted.
If I ask for corrections to be made send me the corrected version and we
start the process over. Don't post the flyer until we have it right.

Is there a handy-dandy, easy reference checklist of things for NM USAC promoters to include on all race fliers?

If not, let's do one.

Correct me how things have changed here, but the USAC rep has been a
paid position, granted not much, but also included a proration based
on the number of licensed riders in their jurisdiction.
Disirregardless*, a huge amount of patience is needed in your position
now like the position I assumed for most of 11 years. Yes, patience
easily wears thin, but when it's gone, so is the growth of bicycle
racing in NM.

then please just ask this, please don't threaten anyone. You threaten
me and I'll retaliate. Stupid rules just bring out the irrationality
in all of us. Which is exactly the wrong thing that needs to happen
here in NM racing now.

Thanks for the reply and your response to good ol' Halliburton,

* almost eveyone seems to use 'irregardless' when they mean
'regardless' so I like to play with that word.

Cliff,

I meant that as a warning and not a threat.  What happens if instead of complaining to me about a flyer somebody complains directly to Colorado Springs?  Just like officiating a lot happens out on the road that the CR never hears about because we handle it ourselves.

As far as I know that money is what is coming back to NMBRA.  Maybe in a larger state the rep gets paid but remember in your words we are in podunk New Mexico.

On a brighter note membership is up, we are currently at 240 USAC Road Licenses and that is probably not including what has been sold the last tow weekends.

The USAC permit process includes a checklist that outlines the requirements for the flyer this way: flier has to list
event contact info,
race location,
entry fees,
prize list,
and registration time.
Is there more to it than that?  If promoters just follow the checklist are they OK?

I seem to remember a discussion on flyer contents at the clinic. Was there maybe a slide that covered the requirements?

Al,

Sorry to have been part of this situation - and I'm hoping email
issues you've noted are not causing problems (par for the course for
me though). I thought I had the Galisteo flier nailed, and sent to Tom
S. with the corrections you noted - to post on the nmcycling site.

Sorry to have jumped the gun there, as there were more refinements
necessary!

I emailed a copy of that final (I hope!) version to you on 6 MAR, but
haven't heard back yet. So I called a few days ago, left a message -
and now have mailed everything down to you, including the permit
application paperwork and flier. You should have it, or receive it
today (depending on our fabulous mail service here in NM!).

When you have a chance to review everything, and the flier is
"approvable" - please let me know. I have a race site ready to go -
which will host the pertinent files - but of course, wish to not post
ANYTHING prematurely that is not approved / appropriate / would cause
me to be fined $500!

Anyhow - I appreciate the huge amount of work everyone puts in here in
addition to / on top of their personal lives. NMBRA and Galisteo work
are eating into my limited personal time (read: riding) as well, but
I'm happy to do it. After La Tierra last year, I felt like I had the
mountain-bike race promotion thing figured out - and am learning the
ropes this year in the more complex road race end of things.

Seeing how excited my 16 month old son is about all-things pedal-
powered and two-wheeled is all the payback I need.

Rule 1E pretty much covers it.  We have to look for the declaration “Held under USA Cycling event permit”, that dates and locations of all races in the event match the permit, classes and categories eligible for each race, the specific kinds of event, distances, total amount of the prize list, nature of prizes (cash or merchandise), the number of that will receive prizes, amount of entry fee, surcharges if any, order of events, starting time of first event, entry closing date, registration closing time, min/max field size and plans for cancellation or postponement.

As I read it - Rule1D2(e) words Race Announcement Approval a little
differently than 1E, regarding the fine associated with a promoter
prematurely posting a as-yet-unapproved race 'announcement' - can be a
total of prematurely accepted entry fees, which in this case equals
$0.00, thankfully - as I have not yet received an entry fee. But 1E2
clearly states the $500 rule.

Of course, 1D2(e) also states a permit may be denied/revoked and that
the promoter can be suspended! Hopefully I've not quite gotten myself
into that much trouble.

((to be taken lightly - in case my bubbly good mood his morning is not
making it's way across the wacky world of web))
