1) Will I lose any functionality going from 2016 essentials to 2022 standard? Since the server currently acts as local domain controller...all username are like "[businessName].local" - that said, we do have a verified domain name that i intend to connect with Azure AD once the upgrade is complete, but i cannot connect or migrate anything with server essentials. (everything else i use the server for (sql, dns, group policy, hyper-v) will be unaffected when reviewing the 2022 feature list)

2) Only me and one other admin physically log into the server, however there are several other AD user accounts, whose files are stored on the server and are accessed via other workstations which are manage with group policy. Will I need CAL's for each user that has an active account on the server, regardless of if they actually use the server itself? Or only the two of us that actually access the server itself?

3) Are there any other licensing requirements and/or incompatibilities that i should be aware of doing an upgrade such as this? I really want to upgrade this server so that i can utilize Azure services but I do not want to do this upgrade, only to find out that my server is no longer usable.

The two prerequisites to introducing the first 2019 or 2022 domain controller are that domain functional level needs to be 2008 or higher and older sysvol FRS replication needs to have been migrated to DFSR

I'd use dcdiag / repadmin tools to verify health `correcting all errors found` before starting `any` operations. Then stand up the new 2019 or 2022, patch it fully, license it, join existing domain, add active directory domain services, promote it also making it a GC (recommended), transfer FSMO roles over (optional), transfer pdc emulator role (optional), use dcdiag / repadmin tools to again verify health, when all is good you can decommission / demote old one.

A Windows Server CAL is a license that grants access Windows Server. CALs are used in conjunction with Microsoft Windows Server OS licenses to allow Users and/or Devices to access and utilize the services of that windows server
- User CALs allow a single user access to Windows Server from an unlimited number of devices
- Device CALs allow an unlimited number of users to access Windows Server from a single device

This week I had a Skype conversation with a fellow MVP and friend from Brazil, Daniel Santos. He reported an issue he was having installing the Essentials 2016 TP4 OS which was stalling at 17% during the Essentials configuration Wizard.

Daniel has since installed a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server, and an Essentials 2016 Guest and confirms that has installed correctly. I have installed it on a Bare Metal HP Microserver N40L also without any issue.

Following on with our own research, Daniel and i reproduced the Installation Stall a few more times and Daniel found that starting the Windows Server Essentials Management Service was enough to kick-start the install, without resorting to editing the registry.

I can confirm this issue on a Windows 10 build 1511 x64 Hyper-V host. I manually started the Windows Server Essentials Management Service and it continued past 17% to 39% where it rebooted and I had to manually start it again. It seems it is not starting after each reboot. Thank you for finding this fix as it was what I needed to continue testing this release.

I just built a Essentials R2 DC and and Exchange Server 2016 on Windows Server 2012 R2 (on VMs of course) but the dashboard integration in Essentials cant see the Exchange 2016 Server. Not sure if Microsoft intended or is aware of it but it kind of kicks using Exchange 2016 in the butt for now for those joining to an Essentials Domain.

i have started the service as above and i also noticed that dns was set to 127.0.0.1 so i added google dns server 8.8.8.8 and rebooted the server and run essentials role again and it completed without any issues

Can not get pass 16%. Have tried the work around in regedit (that was already set to false). Then the one (Windows Server Essentials Management Service) it was already running. Set my dns to 8.8.8.8 and that did not work. Stuck, any thoughts?

Thanks for your post. I installed Windows Server Essentials on a Dell Optiplex 780 without any problems. I installed it as virtual machine (VirtualBox) on windows 7 host. and it got stuck at 17% and 39%. Starting the Windows Essential Management Service helped in both cases.

We plan to purchase Windows Server Essentials 2019 license for the purposes of our small business. However, we use TeamViewer for technical support, so my question is whether TeamViewer will work on this edition, knowing the fact that WS Essentials does not support RDS.

Hello i have installed also this **bleep** of software (windows server 2019 essentials) and i can not login to server by Teamviewer until someone open RD connection. Server has no connected monitor, keyboard and mouse. RDP connection work but only 2 connection in one time. And without oppened RDP connection Teamviewer show me only black screen. If i open RDP connection Teamviewer show me screen. Is there any option or setting how to fix this?

I have the same problem with Teamviewer and Windows Server 2019: unattended access does not work. Someone should RDP to the server in order for Teamviewer to be online. If nobody logged in, Teamviewer goes offline, If RDP session is disconnected - it goes online. Teamviewer version 15.34.4. There is no option "Enhanced multi-user support" in the Advanced section
