The level of scholarship and of global public projection of Western art is immense.

I pray that African art reaches that level one day.

Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh is much loved for the rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour of his paintings. This volume features van Gogh's most celebrated works from Starry Night to Sunflowers and from the landscapes and people of Arles to self-portraits, interiors and still lifes.

The classic essay on van Gogh's life and work by Wilhelm Uhde is supplemented by a completely new introduction written by Louis van Tilborgh.

Yes, indeed. I did not realize how important this is until when I taught Western Humanities and had to learn all those different styles. In all my studies in Nigeria, I never took a course in art history or something that emphasized that. It is very informative. We became friends with the Professor of Art History in my school because now I tell him after listening to several of his lectures, when I see any kind of art work, I begin to think what might be the author's intent and what was she or he trying to communicate and for what purpose.

At that time I was forced to take students to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and give them lectures on Ancient Greek, Roman, Medieval, and Renaissance Art. I remember how initially uneasy that was, since I was not trained in that area. But frankly with a good textbook and a love for and appreciation of social history, it is easy to get on the bandwagon.

I will truly love to see African art promoted as it is done and taken seriously in the West. It is not just the piece of artwork per se, but the story behind it. Indeed, at one point, I thought if I have the money I will open a small museum of my own demonstrating over time the struggles of the poor as represented in artwork. It is always nice and great to know what people are trying to communicate and why? Artworks are like books, they are texts that need to be read carefully and analyzed.

African art is taken seriously by the West. Their museums in London, Paris, Rome etc
are overflowing with stolen African art treasures but the hypocrites
don't want you to realize this fully. Looted artifacts are worth billions.

The information level on Western art provided by books is huge and keeps growing.

It cuts across all ages, various levels of sophistication and of economic access.

Right now, we have the Internet which has expanded marvelously the access to art.

What is the scope of access to African art and to scholarship in this art enabled by the Internet?

A key destination in relation to this access is Facebook groups, of which the University of African Art founded by Moyo Okediji, in its English and French forms, is central, along with such initiatives as the Facebook page on the 100 most influential Africanist artists of the 21st century, initiated by Moyo Okediji.

Also vital are the websites and Facebook pages of particular artists, of which Victor Ekpuk has a particularly good set of albums charting the development of his art over the years in his Art of Victor Ekpuk.

thanks
