You dont surrender in a war if you are not defeated or if the prospect of catastrophic defeat does not loom large.  Surrender implies the acknowledgement that the other side is superior.

You call a truce if both sides are equally matched and neither side is strong enough to defeat the other as Saladin and Richard the Lion Heart did in one of the episodes of the Crusades.

Thought For Today:

Buhari is not the only one with this unnecessary victor mentality, unnecessary because Biafra was not defeated, Biafra surrendered.

They all have it, Obasanjo, Babangida and others who fought on the Nigerian side during the civil war.

There is also an amusing irony. They called the Biafran army "ragtag" and still beat their chests about their imaginary victory after 30 months of intense fighting with an army they called "ragtag".

There could be other considerations for surrender, like the avoidance of serious human and material casulities on both sides.

Biafra was suffering great casulities in the conventional warfare.

Achuzie then came with the game changer, a guerrilla outfit known as "Biafra organization of Freedom Fighters (BOFF)" which could have elongated the war period to many years with the attendant human and other casulities on both sides.

The above informed the surrender proposal and acceptance.

In any case, no matter the reason, surrender is not the same as defeat.
