My Problems Developing a Comprehensive Study of Nigerian Artist Bruce Onobrakpeya's Life and Work

Oluwatoyin Vincent Adepoju

I've been facing challenges on this project with information reaching me through a contact I asked to help me speak to Bruce Onobrakpeya that Onobrakpeya states he does not want to to continue with the project.

This comes after he stopped taking my calls for no reason given to me.

I am continuing the project anyway.

Those Western scholars who dominate the study of African art are not spirits.

They are human beings like you and I.

Are we waiting for people from Harvard or Oxford to come and study our artists?

They have their own artists to study.

Update on My Experiences Developing a Comprehensive Study of Nigerian Artist Bruce Onobrakpeya's Life and Work

                                                                    Oluwatoyin Vincent Adepoju

The picture taken on the 9th of April 2025 shows Bruce Onobrakpeya, in white, myself in a striped t shirt, on his left, Folashade Abiola,  the gallerist at the Fubaly gallery, on his right, and Afuevo Onakufe, at the back, at the conclusion of the press briefing on the forthcoming exhibition curated by Afuevo Onakufe, Eight Masters of Print Making in Nigeria, at the Fubaly Art Gallery, Lekki.

I'm making this update to reflect my updated understanding of the subject of the title following an earlier post I made on the same subject.

1. Bruce Onobrakpeya has never stated to me that he does not wish to continue with my project of writing his full length biography.

2. The report that he has stated that  has not been corroborated by him and so I can't take it as coming from him.

3. I met Bruce Onobrakpeya at an art press briefing on the  9th April 2025, to which I was graciously invited by Dr. Afuevo Onakufe and Mr Ademola Williams and Onobrakpeya told me he had not been avoiding my calls as I thought he had.

He stated he has two phones and the one the number of which I have is not always with him.

He did not make any statement dissociating himself from my project on his work.

I apologize for any wrong impression I have given on Bruce Onobrakpeya through my previous post.

I give great thanks to Afuevo Onakufe for inviting me to the event and to Mr. Ademola Williams for also inviting me and insisting I speak with Bruce Onobrakpeya to clarify the issues bothering me.
