Background: The post references issues that can be linked to political
party APC's strategy in winning Lagos in the just concluded guber election
after they suffered a historic defeat in the previous Presidential
election, the first time since Nnamdi Azikiwe that a party headed by a
non-Yoruba person, Peter Obi's Labour Party, won an election at that level
in Yorubaland .

At the core of the APC's strategy going forward has been the demonization
of Igbos, using Peter Obi's Igbo ethnicity as a pivot, and employing that
ethnic strategy in demarketing the Labour Party candidate for the Lagos
guber elections, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour, arguing his mother and wife are
Igbo and that he is Igbo rather than Yoruba, even as Gbadebo points to his
Lagos roots and family history.

a comment I have posted below, argues that the ethnicization of Obi's
candicacy was orchestrated by Igbos and claims that Igbos spearheaded an
ethnic triumphalism over LP's win in the Presidential elections in Lagos
that provoked an ethnicist backlash from Yorubas.

He also states that Obi's Igbo supporters were particularly virulent in
responding to those who did not identify with their candidate. I have
experienced that myself since I have a good no of Igbo friends on Facebook
and noted the sheer inability of practically all of them who responded to
my one time declaration of support for the Yoruba Presidential candidate
Bola Tinubu to appreciate the logic of my position as I tried to present
it, these supporters of Obi insisting I was supporting Tinubu bcs he is
Yoruba, since my name is a Yoruba name, leading to the conviction that I am
Yoruba.

Obi's supporters, who cut across various ethnic groups, particularly in the
South, were known for particularly forceful approaches in verbally
supporting their candidate. They have been described as responding from
profound frustration with the Nigerian political system.

It has been declared that Gbadegbo states he cant speak Yoruba well, a
point that may be seen as linkable to Moyo's post.

The literary quality of Moyo's post and the quality and variety of comments
it has inspired make it a historic document in the history of relationships
between culture and politics in Nigeria.

Moyo is a dedicated cultural activist, a good part of whose work as
scholar, artist and writer is centred on the celebration and development of
his Yoruba culture, a person who has to his credit a scholarly article
written entirely in the Yoruba language, a stance he argues the post is
centred in, rather than the political orientations almost or perhaps all
of those for the post and all against the post are reading into it.

I hope the post will not be taken down.

Below, I present the post and some of my favourite responses to it. I see
those who perceive the post as politically motivated and understand the
post as dangerous as the most insightful and so reproduce mostly their

Lessons From Lagos
Four lessons from Lagos.
One: teach your children to speak very properly your indigenous languages,
if you want your children to be accepted as leaders in the community.
You cannot think in English or French, and speak pidgin Yoruba, yet expect
Yoruba people to accept you wholeheartedly as their leader.
They will see through you and reject your elitism.
Second: when you see a calm beehive, do not poke it with a stick.
The bees are protecting their queen.
That is why they are so calm.
If you poke the beehive with a stick, those calm bees will surely react.
Third: because the surface of the water is still and calm doesn’t mean that
the water is shallow; or that is not the abode of ferocious crocodiles.
Four: Yoruba people do not eat with the left hand.
When they learn a lesson, they hold the lesson inside their left fist so
they don’t use that hand to eat dodo.
We are taking serious lessons from Lagos.

kind of education did you people go through because I just don’t understand
your points…that you don’t know that speaking your indigenous language
fluently is one of the criteria for measuring competence of a political
aspirant in such vicinity still baffles me…lagos has baales..obas iyalojas
and the likes who the governor will be having relationship and
conversations with for a better governance…many of these people don’t even
speak English….you want to destroy Lagos with your ignorance and run back

Evbaruovbo Earnest it's the problem caused by Igbo that they are still
resolving. Well, the only time an igbo ruled as a military head, he spoilt
everything. He destroyed the regional government with the aim of using
national resources to develop his region. He did not realize that the
Hausa/Fulani would one day seize the power. So before he could blink the
power was taken from him. An Igbo man was the architect of the country's
problem. If he didn't merge the regions for "ease" of governance, every
region would be growing at its own pace and maybe we would not be where we
are now. So before we say some tribe has not done well in governance, we
must realize the genesis of and the people responsible for our common ache.

no to racism when we are at the end of the spectrum of colour. We are the

xenophobia in South Africa but when, all of a sudden, the torch shines at
our face, it polishes our ego and makes us feel larger than life! Lessons
learned from Lagos indeed. The double standard…

How many of my children and grandchildren leaving abroad can speak
Yoruba fluently? How many of your children and grandchildren leaving in
abroad can speak Yoruba fluently? Is that the basis for intellectual
development sir? Is that the basis for invention, creativity and
civil living? As a Yoruba man, father and grandfather I cherish
my culture
but when it comes to spreading and forwarding hate speaches messages
against Igbo's or any tribe for cheap political gain and propaganda for

Yes, speaking Yoruba enables us to explore things in multiple
dimensions.
Do you know that Ifa is the basis of the modern computer?
I'm a university professor and my study of Ifa helps me to understand
coputer science as a creative art form, the way none of my colleagues can.
That places me at an advantage.
Tomorrow, fro 6-9pm I will be handling a graduate seminar with Ph.D.
students on Ifa computation.

I don't understand Lessons 3 & 4, don't know what they mean, but if
they're like 1 & 2, they don't hold, in my opinion.
1. Dimeji Bankole's Yoruba is horrible, but he represented his
constituency repeatedly even became Speaker.
More recently, Seyi Adisa represented his Afijio constituency in the Oyo
House of Assembly, he doesn't speak Yoruba/his Yoruba is horrible, he
doesn't even pretend about it.
Lagos is not more Yoruba than those 2 constituencies.
2. Nobody stirred any beehive. Tinubu was won clean and clear in Lagos
from free and fair elections. Yoruba people voted massively against Tinubu
in Lagos. Except you're saying we live in a mobocracy and the people,
including native Lagosian, the Awori et al, shouldn't have dared the thugs.

The above submission, to me, is merely a coy way of endorsing voter
suppression, intimidation, disenfranchisement, promoting tribalism, etc. It
may have held if the vote was free, not when authentic Yoruba who weren't
voting APC were chased away by thugs, with state support.

When Jimmy Agbaje, a native Lagosian, ran for governor of Lagos, this
whole BS about who owns Lagos, whether it is 'no man's land',
etc came up.
His candidacy was termed an attempt by the Igbo to take over
Lagos! Because
he wasn't a Tinubu stooge. Anybody who isn't a Tinubu stooge is Igbo
or agent of the Igbo to take over Lagos.
The reasonable people see through this BS. It's people who should
know better who defend and entrench it.

agree that we have a lot of work to be done. I have
reservations about my
people as well. What I am not happy about is buying into the ethnic

half-truths in your
narratives; I must say that you have perfected this as a
way of convincing
yourself that this is the best way to live life. I hope

I know from comments here that a great deal of commentators either don't
live in Nigeria or are elites who choose to live in denial. The
Presidential election result in Lagos was a major shift in the political
calculus of Nigeria. Those who voted massively for Obi and LP did so across
ethnic divides. I have 2 children in Lagos. They are both Obidients. From
VI, Lekki, Ikeja, youths voted massively for Obi and probably would have
done same for GRV. As soon as the result was announced, the GLOATING and
the BOASTING began. You need to see the virulence of it on Twitter. It was
no longer about the intended shift or making a point against establishment.
It suddenly became an ethnic thing, a victory for the power and influence
of Ndigbo in Lagos. Some even brazenly made videos to that effect and the
"no man's land" refrain suddenly started gaining traction. I was appalled
by it all. I knew it would not end well. I saw many of those tweets and
videos. One of my sons told me that some of the things he heard from Igbo
guys made him regret casting his vote for Obi. There is no smoke without
fire. It us interesting that when Yoruba people started responding to the
unabashed provocation, the ethnic baiting started. If I cannot control the
ferocity of your slap on my face, you cannot control the viciousness of my
reaction. It's so unfortunate that an eye for an eye only makes everyone go
blind!
Many of us are in foreign lands that have accommodated us without caring
where we come from. Sometimes, we still struggle with racism even when we
hold the passports of our host nations. Nonetheless, we dare not stand and
abuse the sensibilities of our hosts. That is the issue here and should be
divorced from blatant ethnicity and tribal bigotry. How come we didn't have
all of these outrages till after election? And it is NOT because Tinubu
lost to Obi in Lagos. That was made possible by people who just needed a
change in Lagos. LP would probably have repeated that feat but for the
issue I mentioned above. Prof and I were contemporaries in College and in
our days, tribe and ethnicity were never issues. To a large extent, many
Nigerians still think that way, especially in the SW where Ndigbo and other
tribe's have been given ample room to flourish. I asked an Igbo friend to
mention ONE Yoruba man who has one acre of land to his name in his part of
Igboland. He could not.
Those who come to equity must always approach the table with clean hands.
Igbos have thrived and continue to thrive unmolested in Lagos. They
continue to contribute significantly to its economy. Ndigbo who mean well
should address those who are stoking the fires among their elite, rather
than complain about the attendant conflagration. Deal with the cause, the
consequence will be taken care of.
Almost every Igbo person I attempted to engage in conversation on the
candidacy of Obi when I was trying to decide who to support, responded with
anger, attacks on my person and evidently ethnic slurs rather than reason.
I had to DELIBERATELY rise above those pedantic narratives.

Nnamdi Kanu was on social media and Radio Bi.afra supervising and
commanding the burning of BRT and public infrastructure in Lagos. I heard
it myself, and people were calling him to update him as the they burnt down
buses and police stations. He was particular and emphatic about Lagos and
overrunning the city. I was shocked but, as a die-hard nationalist, I
simply shrugged it off as the rantings of a deluded agitator. Lt.Col Victor
Banjo, a Yoruba man was Ojukwu's friend and fought on the side of Biafra
during the Civil War. He led many offensives against Federal troops and led
the onslaught that captured the then Midwest. Then Ojukwu ordered him to
proceed and take Lagos. Banjo refused that order. He was invited back to
Enugu and Ojukwu personally supervised his execution as a traitor to the
Biafran cause. I believe the last election only acted as a pin that pricked
an inflated balloon.
The question in my mind in all of these is, "WHY THE OBSESSION WITH LAGOS?"

However, I put it to you that the ascendancy of Obidiency was also fuelled
by ethnicity as much it was fuelled by the disenchantment of young people,
legitimate anger of many citizens over the state of the nation as well as
the support of a toxic mix of EndSARS and IPOB mob.
Ethnic jingoists, mostly, repackaged Obi as the best thing to happen in
Nigerian politics since Awolowo. It was intentional and against the run of
play and available facts.
That was why when OBIdiency was in full throttle, these ethnic irredentists
threw communal tantrums and hurl verbal grenade everytime we attempted to
paint Obi in his true colour as an establishment guy and 'one of them',
that is, troublers of Nigeria.
I mean how could I have fallen cheaply to the nonsense that Obi was the new
guy on the block and the political messiah we'd been waiting for when it's
on record that medical doctors were on strike for 13 months under his watch
as Anambra State governor (a record till date by Nigerian warped standard?
We mentioned Pandora Papers, OBIdients told us to shove it down our
throats; their principal did nothing wrong as if we didn't know the kind of
people who.hide money in tax havens and why they usually do so.
And who were the most ardent cyber terrorists and abusers of others during
that period of political jousting? What's their ethnicity?
Obi sold his presidency to his people and Christians in Nigeria and the
results of the presidential election were reflective of his agenda and
efforts. His people owned his campaign and manipulated many into supporting
him through a combination of subterfuge, throwing communal tantrums,
playing the victim and sickening propaganda.
Many fell for the trick but the romance didn't last long because it was
only a matter of time before subterfuge was let go and real agenda
unwrapped for all to see.
Since capturing Nigeria was not possible by all indications (some are still
deluded that Obi could have won), the trick was to use Nigeria to capture
Lagos, the shining diamond on the crown. IPOBian OBIdients in a fit of
madness, delirium and follow-come hubris, took over cyberia and the main
streets strutting like a conquering army over the Lagos win. One energetic
and overzealous OBIdient climbed to the zenith of a gigantic billboard on a
major road in Lagos and waved an Eluu Peee flag with IPOB inscribed on it.
That's was reminiscent of the manner ISIL and Boko Haram do hoist their
flags on conquered territories.

The scales began to fall off the eyes of the most committed Yoruba
OBIdients (I have many of them as friends and I know how fast they made a
U-turn like you did). The rallying cry was 'To.your tent, Oh Israel '. The
rest, as they say, is history.

issues in toto. Like your children, I wanted a change in governance and I
massively campaigned and voted for Obi. His success as a first timer
pointed to the fact that many people like me wanted that change. And then
the sectional agitation and sense of entitlement to Lagos. That is when I
personally put in my reverse gear. Like you asked, what is the obsession
about Lagos? Why claim Lagos as a no man's land? Where there no indigenes
in Lagos? People should get some good sense and drop their tendencies for
destruction and war. In this day and age, no one has the monopoly of
violence but what we want is peaceful coexistence. We have build bridges of
friendship across the country; there had been inter marriages. We should
keep it that way. I noticed that the most vehement vituperations come from

doesn't reflect Yoruba values in anyway. It is the desperate attempt of a

Baba, you made this post from an emotional standpoint. Perhaps you could
have waited a few days and the message would have come out differently.
What happened in Lagos is not about Yorubas but a carefully orchestrated
political defence of loot. The bees poked were not defending any queen but
their loot. Tinubu made Lagos a very rich state through his IGR drive but
the unchallenged control also bred deep seated corruption. The quest to
take over by opposing sides is natural likewise the violent defence of the
patrimony. None has anything to do with Yoruba or Yorubaness

I don't understand Lessons 3 & 4, don't know what they mean, but if they're
like 1 & 2, they don't hold, in my opinion.
1. Dimeji Bankole's Yoruba is horrible, but he represented his constituency
repeatedly even became Speaker.
More recently, Seyi Adisa represented his Afijio constituency in the Oyo
House of Assembly, he doesn't speak Yoruba/his Yoruba is horrible, he
doesn't even pretend about it.
Lagos is not more Yoruba than those 2 constituencies.
2. Nobody stirred any beehive. Tinubu was won clean and clear in Lagos from
free and fair elections. Yoruba people voted massively against Tinubu in
Lagos. Except you're saying we live in a mobocracy and the people,
including native Lagosian, the Awori et al, shouldn't have dared the thugs.

The above submission, to me, is merely a coy way of endorsing voter
suppression, intimidation, disenfranchisement, promoting tribalism, etc. It
may have held if the vote was free, not when authentic Yoruba who weren't
voting APC were chased away by thugs, with state support.

When Jimmy Agbaje, a native Lagosian, ran for governor of Lagos, this
whole BS about who owns Lagos, whether it is 'no man's land', etc came up.
His candidacy was termed an attempt by the Igbo to take over Lagos! Because
he wasn't a Tinubu stooge. Anybody who isn't a Tinubu stooge is Igbo or
agent of the Igbo to take over Lagos.
The reasonable people see through this BS. It's people who should know
better who defend and entrench it.
