OBITUARY
Emeritus Prof. Tekena Nitonye Tamuno, FNAL, D.Litt., OFR.
The President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Prof. B. Olatunji Oloruntimehin, FHSN, FNAL, regrets to announce the transition to glory of Emeritus Prof. Tekena Nitonye Tamuno, FNAL, D. Litt., OFR. Emeritus Prof. Tamuno died on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 83 years. A Fellow and former President of NAL, and one-time Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Tamuno was born on January 28, 1932, in Okrika, Rivers State. He attended St. Peter’s School, Okrika from 1938 to 46; Okrika Grammar School, Okrika from 1947 to 51; University College, Ibadan from 1953 to 1958; Birkbeck College, University of London from 1960 to 62; and Columbia University, New York City, United States from 1965 to 66.
Prof. Tamuno, a distinguished historian, intellectual and poet began his distinguished academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in History, University College, Ibadan in 1962 and was promoted Lecturer in 1963; Senior Lecturer, 1967; and Professor of History, 1971-1990. He was Head of Department of History, University of Ibadan between 1972-75 and was appointed the Dean of Arts, 1973-75; Chairman, Committee of Deans, University of Ibadan, 1974-75; Principal, University College, Ilorin, 1975; Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, 1975-79; Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, 1981-88; Visiting Professor in History, Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, 1989-90; Research Professor in History and Distinguished Fellow, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, 1990-94.02 to 2003.Emeritus Prof. Tamuno served as Chancellor, Redeemer’s University; Chairman of the presidential panel on National Security from October 2001 to December 2002 and panel on Policing Nigeria Project.On Monday, November 17, 2014, Emeritus Professor Tamuno received the award of the Honorary Degree of Doctors of Letter (D.Litt.) of the University of Ibadan. It was a befitting tribute to a distinguished academic career.
The President and members of the Exco have since visited the bereaved family on behalf of the Academy. May God grant the family, his admirers and loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss. Amen.
May his gentle soul rest in peace. Amen.
