LETTER OF INVITATION TO A ONE-DAY DIALOGUE SESSION ON THE COST OF GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) with support from FEPAR wishes to formally invite you to a one-day dialogue session on the cost of governance in Nigeria with the Orosanye report in perspective.

There has been a general consensus that the cost of governance and running the administration of government business in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world and constitutes a major challenge to development by channelling resources into components of expenditure that do not stimulate the necessary economic and productive activity that can generate people-oriented development.

However, while there is seeming convergence of opinion that this is detrimental national development, unsustainable and deserves drastic and decisive action to stem, there is no consensus as to how this should be achieved. While some propose the reduction of unnecessary expenditure on dispensable political appointees and extravagant perks of office of government officials, curbing of wastage through disciplined public expenditure management and a more emphatic fight against corruption, others propose the rationalization and stream lining of government agencies. We expect Dr. Mrs. Ezekwesili as a lead speaker.

The Oronsaye Committee was set up by President Jonathan to consider the issue of bloated and overlapping government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and has submitted its report where it recommended efficient downsizing and/or consolidation of several MDAs. While the Federal Government White paper is still pending, CISLAC proposes to proactively assemble relevant stakeholders to examine the issues and propose the most effective ways to make the cost of governance more efficient and less anti-development. The dialogue holds as follows:

Date:           19th August, 2013
