Good obit for houtoundji,
I always liked his resistance to ethno-philosophy, but not because “philosophy” is the model, as europeans conceived. It is an old debate re mubimbe and appiah’s efforts to bring forth african philosophy. Which for me points to the weakness in
the obit, overstating placide tempels influence. It was only, for me, a kind of anthro—not philosophy—approach, and introduced interesting ideas to debate. Like mbiti, in fact, just like mbiti, who also generalized about frican thought. Or whatshisname who
wrote about the nuer.
I agree w mudimbe that the real issue is anthro, and hountoudj was a powerful guide against anthro’s attempt to totalized africaniťé, another term used by maquet.
