Gloria, thanks for these categories but they do not capture or account for African Trumpists.

I categorize them into:

1. Culture cringe self-hating and White-worshipping Africans
2. Evangelical, Pentecostal and some other Christians who think that Trump is a protector of Christians and Christian rights worldwide
3. Muslim Africans frustrated with Gaza who thought that Trump would dismantle the US empire, rein in Israel, protect Palestinian interest and bring peace to the Middle East
4. Anti-LGBT Africans who applaud Trump's anti-LGTQ and anti-trans policies and see him as a restorer of heteronormativity, patriachy, and family values
5. Authoritarians and democracy malcontents who are enamored with blustering, bullying, and "strong" leaders (Trump, Putin, etc) who exhibit what they see as decisive if authoritarian leadership
6. Misogynists and patriarchal Africans who see Trump as the avatar of masculinity and a scourge on feminism
7. Self-described anti-woke Africans who applaud Trump's free-willing, "politically incorrect," offensive, and even racist speech. They see Trump as a champion of free speech.

Gloria and Moses:

A small problem exists: you cannot accept the credentials of Western liberal democracy and simultaneously deny its proponents the “rights” to their reasons. The painful reality is this: apart from the inflation that people complain about, those who voted for him continue to gloat.

I like the (i) category the most. They are the ones who first lost their jobs in the new dispensation and the ones crying foul all over the airspace now. Once you manifest self-hate, and pitch your flag at the enemy's camp, there is nothing much left to live by!

Moses

This is helpful. Great insights.
The Palestinian factor is relevant
for both sides of the Atlantic
as well.

Irish American voters who were shocked that a white man who won the primaries was forced by the party machine to step down for a Black women. That was a big ask and they decided to strategically vote for democrats down the ticket (North Carolina) but left the president blank as a protest. It could also be that the box for Kamala was too close to the top of the ballot and could be missed if a voiter was not careful. In other words, Trump did not dramatically increase his votes from 2016, Biden voters stayed away, and the midterm elections may show that Truimpism is a flunkey if the voters come out to vote to reclaim congress and make the billionaires a lame duck presidency.

Oga Falola,

I’ve never accepted or bought into the hype and tenets of liberal democracy, especially when it comes to Africa.

I have been criticizing liberal democracy as unsuitable to Nigeria/Africa for almost 20 years, including on this list.

Remember my numerous debates and discussions with our dear departed friend, Professor Ken Harrow on the subject?

I have published essays on the subject in several publications.

One of those essays even got translated into Arabic and was republished by an Egyptian publication.

Because of those publications, a major Swedish newspaper sought me out for an interview on the subject, which was published.

I have always criticized and sought to deconstruct the positively framed discursive consensus of democratization in Africa in the 1990s and 2000s, seeing it as a seminal moment of grand deception and Western ideological and political conquest of Africa rather than a positive baseline of democratic ascendancy. It was a Western liberal democratic imposition rather than democratization in an African and organic sense.

I’m glad that, gradually, my idea is resonating. Obasanjo has now disavowed liberal democracy for Africa and is now preaching the gospel what he calls Afro-democracy.

Former Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti is now pushing for the consensus-based, non-adversarial, non-zero-sum electoral contest that I’ve been advocating for years as a replacement for the winner-takes-all adversarial elections of liberal democracy.
