Olusegun Obasanjo "lives in a 50-room mansion." He is also building a "Presidential library" because they do so in America. SMH. What is he going to put in the "library" other than egusi seeds? Just watch this fawning piece of crap about the man that gave us "modern Nigeria" and go throw up afterwards. Nigeria: Bullshit nation.

There is really no opposition; our politicians (APC and PDP) are mostly thieves united against the Nigerian people. Buhari has neither the moral authority not the goodwill. He is certainly oblivious of the situation. But I get you.

I hope Nigerians will one day be mad enough to take to the streets and end the plague our "rulers" call "democracy."

Aso Rock is being consumed by daily selective witch hunts. We need real governance not a food fight among thieves.

If Buhari's EFCC EFCC arrests Obasanjo, Amaechi, or @elrufai, I will shave my head, kneel down and apologize for calling you clueless!

"The only problem with Dasuki's loot is that it was not used to sponsor Buhari's campaign, like Rotimi Amaechi [did]."

- Okoli Chiemeka

And someone will try to convince me we are "cleaning the Augean stable." Pompous nonsense!
Oya watch this fawning nonsense about that evil man, founder of our modern hell!

Dear Okoli Chiemeka,

I found your input on the above rather intriguing. Your opening salvo reads:

"Olusegun Obasanjo 'lives in a 50-room mansion'. He is also building a
"Presidential library" because they do so in America. SMH. What is he
going to put in the 'library'other than egusi seeds? Just watch this
fawning piece of crap about the man that gave us 'modern Nigeria' and
go throw up afterwards. Nigeria: Bullshit nation."

From OBJ's library extravaganza to "Nigeria: Bullshit nation"!

Really? Are you seriously, honestly, deducing from that one incident
that our entire country can be condemned as a "bullshit nation"?

I have travelled all the five continents of the world and visited
almost every corner of Africa. Nobody that I know of has every
described his own country as a "Bullshit nation". Not even the
nationals of the failed states of DRC, Somalia and the Central African
Republic.

Sorry for you O!

Thanks OM.
I wonder if America would have been a suitable abode for him if all Americans treat their country with the disdain and contempt with which Ikhide treat his country of birth. He is characteristically negative, pessimistic and unduly sweeping in his interventions on the challenges facing Nigeria. While anyone is free to criticize, wisdom demands that such should be done with the aim of preferring solutions-not just talking for the sake of talking. I only  hope that Donald Trump will not deport him back to his so called 'Bullshit Nation' one day

laugh...................................  I wonder what kind of person this Ikhide man is. There is no day you wont get angry with one thing or the other about his comment on various issues either positively or negatively affecting Nigeria. Anyway. I think people should just sieve his comments and ignore whichever one is annoying.

Nigeria will be great one day and it will start NOW or LATER.

Frankly speaking, I have to commend our dear moderator for his tolerance.
I must confess that in my distribution list, such diatribe would be classified as
hate speech and automatically deleted.

I commend Obasanjo for thinking of a Presidential Library.

Instead he could:

Send the money earmarked for such a library, to American and British banks;

Or build mansions in London, Paris and Frankfurt;

Or build a network of strip clubs in Lagos and Abuja;

Or purchase a fleet of drones and use them against his enemies- including Ikhide;

Or purchase a fleet of personal jets and fly to London for suya on weekends;

Or migrate with the loot to Switzerland.

Which do you prefer?

By the way, he could take the publications of just one man, that we know, and place
in the library.

"The leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, has summoned an emergency “expanded general purpose meeting ” over last week’s massacre of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

The NSCIA is the highest Islamic body in Nigeria, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar.

A source at the NSCIA told PREMIUM TIMES that about 200 top Muslim leaders were invited for the meeting called to review the massacre.
The invitees have already started arriving Abuja, this newspaper learnt.

“The meeting will hold at 4pm today at the National Mosque,” the source said.

Another source said those attending Wednesday’s meeting include all elected officials of the NSCIA as well as all past leaders of the body.
“Others are leaders of all Islamic organisations in Nigeria, top Muslim leaders, clerics, scholars and traditional rulers,” our source said."

I am sure this August body of "intellectuals" (apologies, Laolu Akande) is not aware that last week, the regime du jour in Aso Rock MASSACRED over a hundred Nigerians in Zaria. Not a peep has been heard from any one of you. That is a shame; there was a time when Nigerian intellectuals had compassion and really cared about things. They would write petitions, they would stage sit-ins, they would do everything but defend an alleged  wife beater (Obasanjo, yes, read all about it here, how he chased his wife down the street, not with flowers, but with a knife!) someone who by all credible accounts has had his hands on everything looted from the treasury since 1979 (Obasanjo). Mr. Obasanjo has no right to lay his hands on a woman, he has no right to loot our nation dry, it fills me with shock that anyone would defend looting because some of it is invested in our country. Imagine that.

You are all prattling over here about septuagenarians sharing bullet-proof cars while the nation burns. These same leaders's children and grandchildren do not even attend your classrooms, you are not good enough for them. They don't even live in Nigeria, they are in Ivy League schools while the children of the poor cower in pretend classrooms.

It is a failure of leadership on our part, but the good news is that the young are taking matters in their hands. They are asking questions that you all scoff at. And they are getting answers. Finally. I am happy!

And Esu smirks!

Prof, thank you so much as one of your interests is to provide us with much needed comic relief.  It is Christmas holidays season and lightening up is absolutely in order. Have a pleasant Xmas holidays season.

Am I missing something? Is it being suggested that the end justifies the means? Is a thief no longer a thief because they are believed to be a philanthropist? Deeds paid for with stollen public funds even when they are "good' deeds do not make the crime of stealing less so.

Lord Anunoby,

Why are you so hard in your judgement? Should it be the death penalty by firing squad execution by the Nigerian military - in spite of whatever great good the thief is a thief is a thief is a thief does with the money?   So if someone looted Fort Knox ansd donated all the loot to the poor, shuffering and shmiling people of Nigeria, do you think that he should face the musiki  in the hellfire? I’m only asking…

My understanding of  the religious ethic  is that for example  except when it comes to  the imperative of saving life,  one should not break one commandment in order to fulfil another commandment.  Extending this principle to other areas of human affairs, I would suggest that it would be unethical to steal or  loot and use such unlawful  obtained money  to finance one’s pilgrimage to wherever…

Here are some details of the account that the Almighty originally offered the Torah to all nations and their various reasons for not accepting it.

You ask, “Is a thief no longer a thief because they are believed to be a philanthropist?”
How should one approach such a question of ethics ?  There is the moral example of Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest and his merry men who stole from the rich and gave the proceeds to the poor, a role model for some people. This is the foundation of Social Democracy’s taxation policy, (Robin Hood Taxation) in Sweden for example, since the days of Gunnar  Sträng  - not exactly stealing from the rich but taxing the rich, a form of their legally voluntary or involuntary contribution to maintaining the Social Welfare State. Social Democratic philosophy is  based on the idea that the strong should give a helping hand to the weak – in the same book, the rich should help the poor… this is also the basis of Foreign aid  even under the new names of “Partnership”/ International cooperation under the auspices of  “fair exchange is no robbery”

 And then of course, as you are fully aware, there’s the fairly Marxist concept “all property is theft

I don’t suppose that successful capitalists of the millionaire and billionaire class could be very fond of that sort of concept - we can be sure that they much prefer Matthew 13:12

Anyway, is it not this class of rich people (by hook or by crook) that produces most philanthropists?

The song is God bless the child… (Lady Day)

Yours,

CH

Dear CH,
What is the cost to people and country of the theft of public funds before the loot is expended on acts of charity of choice of the thief? Do we want a society where everyone who gets their hands in the public till may steal from it without consequence because they will spend the funds on acts of charity? Why should the allocation and utilization of public funds be by a thief who steals the funds in betrayal of his oath of office when the law makes clear it must be a public and not private decision? Philanthropy in my opinion should be funded from private not public funds which is one reason governments are not philanthropic institutions as private institutions can be.
I remind you too that one rationale for punishment is its deterrence effect which hopefully enhances behavior change and positive transformation.
Does it not matter that the law be obeyed by one and all? Does it not matter that there are no incentives for anyone to break the law?
Then again I have not prescribed any penalty for law breaking. The law stipulates punishment. It is not always death by firing squad.

Actually, the impact of Obasanjo's kleptomania on Nigeria is mathematically incalculable. This man was in death row in the 90's; from jail he was begging up and down for people to help him beg Abacha. We on Naijanet organized a petition to try to save his life (yes, there was a time when Nigerian intellectuals and professionals really got up and did stuff!). He came out virtually broke. Today, he has a thriving agricultural business, a sprawling hotel across from his 50-room mansion, a university, and investments all over the world. Ask Halluburton. Not even his grand children attend that overpriced secondary school he calls a uncover situ. His children and loved ones attend and have attended some of the best and most expensive universities in the world. From beating his wives to raping our treasury Obasanjo has gotten away literally with murder. He is revered by Nigerian writers and intellectuals who fawn over him as he gives them lectures on corruption, blah, blah, blah. Our writers take selfies with him and el-Rufai. And you expect me to respect these people? Ha! We are not serous. Nonsense.

A word to the wise:

The proposed Bill: “Where any person, through text message, tweets, Whatsapp or through any social media post any abusive statement knowing same to be false with intent to set the public against any person and group of persons, an institution of government or such other bodies established by law shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for two years or a fine of N2m or both fine and imprisonment.”

Probably, even appeals for compassion from Oga Falola and some of the other ogas will not help. His enemies of course would be rejoicing, but for his own good and the peace of mind of his family and friends, cyberspace warrior Ikhide is aware that should that Media Law come into force and he continues undeterred, he may soon qualify for "two years or a fine of N2m or both fine and imprisonment" at which point it might be too late for him to be going down on his knees or prostrating Yoruba style lengthwise on the floor to say "ai baig"

amended:

Lord Anunoby,

Only a rogue/ miscreant/ street urchin and worse would disagree with anything that you have said in this your last posting. But even miscreants like yours truly should have certain reservations.

 Like Jesus of Nazareth, Oga Obasanjo could well ask you “For which of my good works, do you now want to stone me?” – And mind you,  Olusegun has not claimed to be “the only begotten son of Ogun”!

So far we’re only being theoretical. If Lord Ogugua Anunoby were Lord of Tartary, if Lordy Ogugua Anunoby were blessed to be President of Nigeria or Lord Chief Justice of the Federation, conspicuous consumption would end; at three O’clock in the morning, by stealth of night all the criminals (bank robbers, looters ) would leave town.  President Yahya Jammeh  on the other hand (a real president)  even before he declared Gambia an Islamic Republic has said that as for the homosexuals, he’s going to cut off their heads… (What is not clear is whether these executions will happen before or after the trials…

In practice some philanthropy is funded by public funds and we know this to be a fact ; some say that money is the root of all evil  but we all agree that it is also the source of a lot of good – no matter where it comes from….

It’s the age of cynicism & wanton thievery by the bigtime 419 artists and you know these lines don’t need any deciphering; it’s not any kinda cryptic holy writ:

“They say that patriotism is the last refuge

 To which a scoundrel clings

 Steal a little and they throw you in jail

 Steal a lot and they make you king “(Professor Dylan)

It’s story time (history) passing the buck, up:  “There is a certain discipline that you have to meet. In a well-run society, you don’t say things you know. You say things that are required for service to power.

That reminds me of the story of the emperor Alexander and his encounter with a pirate.

I don’t know if it happened, but according to the account from Saint Augustine, a pirate was brought to Alexander, who asked him, How dare you molest the seas with your piracy? The pirate answered, How dare you molest the world? I have a small ship, so they call me a pirate. You have a great navy, so they call you an emperor. But you’re molesting the whole world. I’m doing almost nothing by comparison. That’s the way it works. The emperor is allowed to molest the world, but the pirate is considered a major criminal.” (From page 1 of Noam Chomsky’s “What We Say Goes

So far it’s been mostly a theoretical justice system in Nigeria which favours the rich and crucifies the poor, rewards the corrupt elite and just like Boko Haram and the trigger-happy anti-Shia Nigerian Military - as it suits them, declares war and mass execution of the defenceless poor. They misbelieve that Allah is going to reward them with paradise but is Allah pleased with the kufr of their summary executions?  Vengeance is Mine saith the Lord!” and I suppose that  very soon  they are all going to begin  spending  a very long time burning as the fuel in the fires of jahannam

Saying all that you have said herein, you must think it a step in the right direction that some of the big kahuna are on Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption agenda. Btw I wouldn’t mind if it were possible that he just skip the whole skip rope and dance business and by decree introduce Sharia Law on stealing throughout the Federation,  whereby, steal a little and they chop off your hand, steal a lot or insult the Prophet of Islam and they lop off your head. Don’t you think that would be a nice & effective deterrent for both the big and the little Kahuna?  See how effective it has been in Saudi Arabia !

I’m on my way to the theatre  to  Teatre Reflex  to see Det Går Inte  ( It’s Impossible) a political saga for adults, based on the legend of Robin Hood written and directed by Kent Ekberg ( or as advertised  “ It is an impossible integration comedy" : a political fairy tale for adults, inspired by the legend of Robin Hood.  An impossible comedy with almost 50 people on stage and lots of live music with the newly written Swedish texts directed by Kent   Ekberg.”

Kent Ekberg  is a fantastic theatre director (have hugged him personally a couple of times) is fantastic at working with people - should be invited to Nigeria  – has d worked in South Africa - could direct political theatre  not just  Soyinka / Athol Fugard stuff, to make sense (common sense ) out of some of the absurd realities  even there….

Later,

Cornelius
