Nigeria is a weird country, and Nigerians are weird lot!
Dr. Goke Adegoroye, who was a colleague and a close personal acquaintance (to describe him as ‘friend’ would be stretching it some, but we moved in the same circles) at the Obafemi Awolowo Uinversity, Ile-Ife, in the 80’s was possibly the worst placed person to have delivered the convocation speech he was reported to have delivered at the Obafemi Awolwo University last year, and about which
“The source said that both the President and those at the Presidency were embarrassed by the speech delivered at the convocation ceremony where the government lambasted lecturers accusing them of selling marks and harassing female students for sex.”
For one thing, Dr. Goke Adegoroye was an Almunus of Obafemi Awolowo University, where he later returned to teach in the Faculty of Agrculture, from where he then left to join the ‘public servcie’, should not be the one to so drag down a university which produced him, his own Alma Mater.
Dr. Adegoroye lambasting his former colleagues and fellow “lecturers, accusing them of selling marks and harassing female students for sex” is worse than the case of the pot calling the kettle black – it is the high watermark of ARRANT HYPOCRICY! The kind of hypocricy that characterizes most Nigerian public officials, preaching one thing, but doing another.
Dr. Adegoroye deserves to be on the firing range, and should he be removed from office, it would indeed be good riddance to bad rubbish.

Education Perm Sec Under FireBy Fabian Ozor,Senior Correspondent, LagosThe Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Goke Adegoroye, may be on his was out of the ministry if the pressure being mounted in some quarters including the presidency and the ministry asking for his removal sails through. Sources at the Ministry told Sunday Independent that the Permanent Secretary incurred the wrath of the government when he went to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife to represent the President Yar'Adua who is the visitor to the institution. It was gathered that the speech Adegoroye delivered at the university convocation ceremony late last year was not approved by the presidency because he never sent it to the presidency for vetting and approval. The source said that both the President and those at the Presidency were embarrassed by the speech delivered at the convocation ceremony where the government lambasted lecturers accusing them of selling marks and harassing female students for sex. While the Permanent Secretary was battling to save him self from the embarrassment he caused the presidency, the teachers at the Federal Government College popularly called Unity Schools went on strike demanding for his removal. The teachers, under the aegis of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, are accusing the Permanent Secretary of high handedness and sacking of ministry staff indiscriminately. They are also accusing him of masterminding the recent mass transfer of teachers in the Unity schools without transfer allowances and benefits. They also alleged that Adegoroye was instrumental to the government's move to give away Unity Schools to state governments, saying that it prompted the cancellation of the National Common Entrance Examinations and admission of students which had earlier been concluded before the former ministers were removed. Although the Unity School teachers have temporarily suspended the strike to pave way for dialogue, the Secretary-General of the association, Solomon Onaghinon told Sunday Independent in a telephone interview that his association might resume the strike by Thursday if government fails to meet all their demands which include the removal of the Permanent Secretary. According to him, they would be meeting on Thursday to take a look at how far the government has gone in meeting their demands, adding that the removal of Adegoroye is one of their major demands. It will be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary, Goke Adegoroye had last year in a statement announced the cancellation of admissions into Junior Secondary School in all Unity Schools, saying that the government conducted the 2008 common entrance examination in error. He disclosed that the cancellation was informed by a sudden discovery that the examination itself violated certain provisions of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBE) Act 2004. "Primary school education in Nigeria has ceased to be for six years as earlier practiced, but now nine years as specified in the UBE Act 2004. It is on this premise that the examination is said to be illegal," Adegoroye said. Sunday Independent had early this year, when the Aja-Nwachukwu - led administration reintroduced the examination that was cancelled by the Oby Ezekwesili- led administration, revealed that it was illegal to conduct the examination because it ran contrary to the UBE Act. Sunday Independent investigation revealed that indication to the cancellation emerged when the coordinating body, the National Examination Council (NECO) found it difficult to get approval from the Federal Government to release the results. It was at that point of seeking the approval of government for the release of the results that it was realised that the examination shouldn't have been conducted in the first instance. However, NECO eventually released the results and interviews were conducted but government suspended posting of those candidates that did very well in both written examination and oral interview.

Dear Friends,
General statements aside, did Dr. Goke Adegoroye lie with his speech and statement that "some lecturers" in our institutions of higher education "sell marks and harass female students for sex? Let,s face the issues of whether it happens and not the problem of who said it.
The saintly and much acclaimed Catholic Nun, Mother Theresa of Calcutta who spent her entire life working for the poor was once interviewd by Journalists on what was wrong with the world as things continue to get worse everywhere. Her response which is an admission of truth bears repetition here... The nun looked on the journalists and in a soft voice said:
"What is wrong with the world is You and Me".
Time has come for all of us to accept the truth and reality of constant unethical behaviour at all levels of our society and to call them by name. There is no need calling a Spade a Hoe. When the truth is spoken, no matter how hard and by who, let it be that rational humans admit the truth that is spoken and repent with change. Asking why someone should mention that they happen and who has a right to mention the facts, is petitio principi in logic (begging the question).

It then becomes a case of "people using what they have to get what they
want," which is more a reflection of the general decadence prevalent in
Nigeria today, where anything goes - politicians and other high office
holders using their offices to loot the nation and become overnight
millionaires, policemen using check points and road-blocks to extort money
from hapless road users, custom officers using their position to extort
money from importers, bank managers using their position to extort money
from potential borrowers, pastors using their position to solicit sex from
female church members in order to open the gates of heaven for them, etc.
It therefore amounts to an exercise in futility to try to isolate one
particular profession for condemnation or chastisement for a malaise that
has become prevalent and widespread in our decadent society - USING WHAT
YOU HAVE TO GET YOU WANT!
But it is also a well-known fact that MANY female students today
DELIBERATELY dangle SEX in front of lecturers to obtain passing grades -
just like some female employs use their sex to obtain promotions and other
pecks, lure customers, secure contracts from the mighty and the powerful.
When a lecturer who was himself not exactly a model of probity - now that
he has become a "powerful perm sec" - starts pointing accusatory fingers
at his colleagues and fellow accomplices, it makes you shake your head in
wonderment, and then ask:
What's going on here?
