Synopsis of the Book Neighborhood Transformation

This book is a Christian reimagination of compassionate ministry through the application of the practice of biblical hospitality. The book advocates the creation of community outreach programs focused on emotional support, legal support, and spiritual refuge for undocumented African immigrants. It links the theological and biblical vision for neighborhood transformation with the philosophical framework of community building. It considers the meaning of community within the context of the Christian calling to build a community of strangers in a pluralistic society like the United States of America. The African diaspora is invited to their vocational calling of rebuilding their local communities using Nehemiah, Ezra, and the contemporary Jewish community in the Diaspora as biblical and contemporary examples.

Here is the link to buy the book for yourself and your African friend in the diaspora.

A hearty Mazel Tov & Great Congratulations to the author!

This book, it’s impact so full of promise, ostensibly promoting the necessary “ brother’s keeper” mentality going back to the first murder recorded in the Bible  -  Cain’s slaughter of his brother Abel - in this case, this Biblical concept with its universal application, is timely, coming as it does, at a time when Donald Trump the wannabe President and “ leader of the free world” during the next round of global anarchy, has on his agenda the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants  who he believes have invaded the United States.

Of course, sober or not so sober, Trump (who thanks to God, also narrowly escaped being murdered -like Abel) probably has it in his evangelical mind to send undocumented African immigrants - God’s dark skinned darlings, back to their “shithole countries” , peremptorily…

This could well cost Trump plenty, such as it could squash his dream of re-occupying / re-colonizing the oval office as what’s at stake is the idealism in the beam of light articulated in The New Colossus, second only to the ultimate Biblical ideal of - take it or leave it -  Israel as a light unto the nations

“The nations”, not to be conflated with “the United Nations” the, so far,193 member states  - and we all know that  practically, “United Nations ain't really united” , talk less of  the UN as a precursor to a “world government” with either - God forbid -  Kamala Harris as its first female president or Benjamin Netanyahu as its first male President.

undocumented African immigrants” sounds like a legal definition, elsewhere, sometimes labelled “illegal immigrants”, such as, once upon a time when I arrived in Ghana for the second time in my life, in early January 1970, fellow Africans, mostly Yoruba kith and kin , belonging to that category that was being described as  “Aliens” by Kofi Abrefa Busia and his   Ghanaian authorities, gave rise to the draconian “Ghana Aliens Compliance Order” about which unfriendly, I’d say hostile action, Julius Malema has another Pan-African orientation  based on his visionary “ Africa without borders”

Hopefully, since quality comes with the man, Jacob K. Olupona’s yet to be read, but certainly seminal “Neighborhood Transformation: A Specialized Ministry to African Immigrants” will inspire similar missionary efforts and similar outreach from other faith groups among the oppressed, and displaced masses, some of them  living underground as lamented in this song, Shelter from the storm which begins

Verse 1:

'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood

When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud

I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form

Come in, she said

I'll give ya shelter from the storm

Verse 4

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail

Poisoned in the bushes and' blown out on the trail

Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn

Come in, she said

I'll give ya shelter from the storm

All the verses/ verse stanzas

Once again, a hearty Mazel Tov & Great Congratulations to the author Dr Olusegun Osineye

and also apologies to him,  for, in haste -  wrongly/ wrongfully attributing the authorship of his book to Professor Jacob K. Olupona who merely wrote the forward.

(BTW, that’s one of the problems when it comes to Nigeria, so many scholars and academics, sometimes a veritable academic jungle out there when you have a plurality of Dr Olusegun this , Professor Olupona that , Dr, Oluwatoyin something else, enough to make you dizzy and sometimes confused. It’s one of the reasons why, when you meet an Oyibo inside or outside the academic Mecca or Jannah, might even be in the Amazon jungle and if you’re Nigerian, he will most likely ask you politely, “Excuse me Sir, but are you a professor, or at least a PhD?”

African Americans tell me that Nigerians are all highly educated.

Circa half a century ago someone introduced me at a bourgeois party in Stockholm, as “ Cornelius, a Nigerian Prince !” thus granting me royal pedigree - and not entirely to my satisfaction, I noticed that my social status was immediately elevated, especially among the ladies ( the wannabe good friends with Prince Cornelius of Nigeria) some of them shmiling and showing off their expensive furs, giving rise to

“Honey, can I jump on it sometime?

Yes, I just wanna see

If it's really that expensive kind”

although deep down I remained yours truly, your humble servant, Cornelius Ignoramus)

If I had wrongly attributed the authorship to J. Ọmọṣade Awolalu, it would have been an equally gross error , but “ to forgive is divine”

In the Gospel according to Dr Luke, there’s The Parable of the Good Samaritan , no doubt post-Columbus, post-Custer, post-Ancient Winds And Memories of A Time Long Ago  could inspire the kind of transformative leadership that Jesus would probably admire

In even more difficult times there was Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad,

eulogised by Colson Whitehead in his The Underground Railroad

Hopefully, what  Dr Olusegun Osineye recommends in Christian America  will not be prosecuted as illegally helping and giving succour to the invading enemy army of undocumented immigrants

Nowadays, there’s The Salvation Army doing the kind of work that’s urgently needed to be done among undocumented migrants in the USA and among the war-torn, bombed out people in e.g. Gaza.
