Thanks. Your Davidson Nicol was part of the cabal who executed my Themne  people. At the U.N. in 1970 he advocated for the rights of the Palestinians. But not for the rights of Ibrahim and M.O. Taqi, and Dr. Mohammed Sorie Forna who were imprisoned for three years by your Siaka Stevens and his APC, because the aforementioned had resigned from his party in September of that year.

William Gbing-Gbing O’Bai Konekay Bangura: Mamouton!

I know that for an unabashed Temne warrior-nationalist like you, still feeling so terribly aggrieved, forty-nine years after the execution of your uncle, Brigadier John Amadu Bangura it should prove to be very difficult, but at the very least you could try and kindly do yourself a favour, first of all by trying to regain some control over your nafs  which at the moment of your writing what you just wrote was obviously in full control of your upper chambers, maybe in full control of your beautiful inner spirit, your heart – your living soul - as it’s obvious that your nafs are now running away with you and from your better judgment, headstrong, like some wild horses, running unto perdition...

May the Almighty redeem you and all of us from Lashon Hara ( https://www.google.de/search?q=Lashon+Hara&trackid=sp-006) evil speech - and the most evil type of speech currently coming from you when you utter such a calumnious and calamitous blunder, saying what you say about one of the best of human beings ever born in Sierra Leone, a man of total integrity, Dr. Davidson Nicol ( https://www.google.de/search?q=Dr.+Davidson+Nicol&trackid=sp-006))

At the very least, I demand that you take back what you just said about him. Or else !

I don’t want to get into too much of personal details but suffice it to say that I knew Dr. Nicol. He is and was the sort of person who if you met him outside of Sierra Leone, irrespective of whatever tribe or so-called class you belonged to, the first thing he would say to you would be, “My dear William, how can I help you?”

I don’t think that you even know what you are talking about, after all, you were not yet even ten years old when Sierra Leone attained Independence. Early in 1970, before my emergency visit to Sierra Leone in March- April of 1970, I visited his son Charles who was then a student at Achimota.

Take note: Dr. Davidson Nicol was not a politician and did not belong to any so-called “Cabal” - which does not mean to say that there were not so kinds of conspiracies, and some occasional envious, evil, tribal talk about him, and the occasional unnecessary, intrigues whereby to seek or secure some favour which he would dispense with willingly, almost as a duty, anyway. He was not the sort of person that you or anyone else could “bribe”...

I don’t want to get into any unnecessary or further unsavoury altercation/s with you about the matter, but in reconsidering your most grievous and ignorant calumny against Dr. Nicol, I should like to ask you, where do you think Dr. Nicol was in March 1970 – or indeed between a few months after David Lansana declared Martial Law and the day that your uncle and the other Sierra Leone martyrs of freedom were executed?

What I do know, I do not speak from hearsay and I do know many facts that you will never read in any book, history book or political science doctoral thesis, including Thomas S. Cox’s Civil-Military Relations in Sierra Leone: A Case Study of African Soldiers in Politics

https://www.google.de/search?q=Thomas+S.+Cox.+Civil-Military+Relations+in+Sierra+Leone%3A+A+Case+Study+of+African+Soldiers+in+Politics&trackid=sp-006

I also knew Tom Cox ( he gave me Miles Davis “Bitches Brew” when it was new) . I saw the African Cup final in Kumasi with my wife and with him in 1970….

In Ghana ( 1970-1971) I met Gandhi Capio and was also a good friends with exile Major Sandy Jumu, former Minister of something in the NRC (National Reformation Council). He was a frequent visitor to us at the Chalets, South Legon, and a creditable Scrabble player. After I crashed my motorcycle (Honda 250cc) he sometimes used to lend me his car.

Other matters: I take issue with some of the format, some of the contents and especially some of the omissions in that haphazard compilation of “Sierra Leone Creoles”. Just as it would be unthinkable that “Nigerian Igbos” would omit to mention Zik , so too I find it remarkable that in this compilation about Sierra Leone Creoles there is no mention of e.g.

William Gbing-Gbing O’Bai Konekay Bangura,

Dr. Davidson Nicol did a lot of good during his lifetime. May the Almighty be pleased with him. Here is Stockholm early in 1972 at dinner at the Grand Hotel something terrible happened with me, but he was still in control of the situation - he merely asked me, " Cornelius, how is your mother? " Earlier on I had refused to shake hands with Jerome Holland, the US Ambassador to Sweden when Dr. Nicol presented me to him. I kept my hand in my pocket. My attitude was, " get the hell out of Vietnam!" After that, a lot of bad things happened.

Between September and December 1969, whilst Ibrahim Taqi was Minister of Information, he visited me and Mary Ann Rogers-Wright at Mathura in Magburaka at least ten times.

Speaking more directly, you could have very well said that as a member of the APC, our very learned non-Creole friend Dr. Abdulai Osman Conteh who as the state prosecutor and attorney-general asked for the death penalty at the Treason trial of Dr. Mohamed Forna, Ibrahim Taqi and the 14 other political martyrs, was one of the main instruments of the injustice.

Who were the presiding judges? Who were the lawyers representing the accused?

Since the Temnes are the numerically strongest ethnic portion of Sierra Leone, why don’t they take advantage of their numerical superiority? Please tell us why.

And the SLPP, the Sierra Leone opposition and civil society, the Temne Chiefs? The Mende Chiefs? The friendly neighbouring countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia? The Organization of African Unity? The United Nations? The United Kingdom? The Commonwealth? The Church of England? The World Council of Churches? The Vatican?

At least I wrote to Pa Shaki and advised him to not even dream of ever burying nuclear waste in Sierra Leone. He must have received a lot of other behind the scenes advice which got him to drop that very bad idea.

Someone like Wole Soyinka did go on a world tour in his campaign against Abacha, but in Sierra Leone, land of the free, before and after that treason trial, what did the Honourable Temne people do on their own behalf and on behalf of Sierra Leone? Please tell us.

Orbai Cornelius,

With reference to your Dr. Davidson Nicol (DN), I stand by my nafs which is a fact. Like Malcolm X, I can confirm the truth, not my truth. According to the late Captain Sam Mboma of Brigadier Andrew Terence Juxon-Smith's National Reformation Council, (DN) was highly involved in the toppling of their junta. Most of my Creole "famble" were deeply involved in the activities of Stevens and his APC and were greatly rewarded for their schemes.

Brothers Cornelius and Bangura:

When it comes to Sierra Leone's  late Dr. Davidson "Abioseh" Nicol (DN), what I mainly want to remember him for is that he was a very helpful mentor and a great African! For example, among what I also want to recall about this great Son of Africa is the fact that, as a highly-placed U.N. official, he very ably headed United Nations' Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), where younger UN employees like Ghana's Kofi Annan; Kenneth Dadzie and several others received their U.N. administrative baptism (training). The much-needed training made these then young diplomats very qualified for the higher U.N. positions they were later appointed to, including the Secretary-General position that Mr. Annan, our fellow West African, occupied.  Also receiving much-needed UNITAR training about diplomacy and security measures were several U.N.-based African diplomats, including Liberia's Ambassador Angie Brooks-Randolph; Ghana's Alex Quaison-Sackey; Nigeria's Chief Simeon O. Adebo, Guinea's Ambassador Diallo Telli, Tanzania's mbassador Salim Ahmed Salim and others.

Happily, it was Dr. Nicol and Professor Ali A.  Mazrui, who co-sponsored several London-based Africans, including myself, for membership in the Royal African Society (RAS) of the United Kingdom, of which they were already top officials. With that affiliation, many of us were able to regularize our visa and other immigration issues in order to live in peace in the colonial citadel  (or capital) called London! For us, it was a big deal, and we were very grateful to Drs. Nicol and Mazrui, both of whom were Oxbridge graduates.

Also, as a scholar, Dr. Nicol, one-time head of Fourah Bay College, penned a short but very important book about Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, in which he showed the role of the institution in educating several West African political, diplomatic and academic leaders, including the late Presidents Nnamdi Azikiwe (Nigeria) and Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana) as well as the late Professor Jones-Quartey of University of Ghana, among several others. Can we just remember Dr. Nicol (who also qualified for the title of "Emeritus Professor") with the great deeds he performed and, as Shakespeare once wrote, just to allow any "evil he did to live after his bones"? By the way, Brother Cornelius, was he not your Godfather as well, as I heard something like that? May he rest in perfect peace until we meet again!

A.B. Assensoh.

Indeed, unrepentant and boastful, you say; “I stand by my nafs which is a fact”. So you still stand by your you nafs?

Believing in your own or in somebody else’s lies is not very helpful here in this vale of tears and does not let you off the hook. At the very least, you should refrain from impugning the honour, the dignity and the integrity of Dr Davidson Nicol, all based on some flimsy, unsubstantiated hearsay which you want to tender as “proof” when you engage in your sordid libel, defamation and slander.

If only you would be willing to take a lie-detector test or as the Christian gentleman that I otherwise believe that you are, to lay your hand on the Holy Bible and repeat after me,

I William Gbing-Gbing O’Bai Konekay Bangura solemnly swear that I will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God, under pain and the penalty for perjury...”

But no, you are not willing to do so because you do not know or know any better, since all you believe in and repeat is the testimony of a dead man, one “Captain Sam Mboma of Brigadier Andrew Terence Juxon-Smith's National Reformation Council “and as Rogie said and you must know this to be true: Dead men can no longer smoke marijuana!”

Chief Cornelius,

Please refute the fact that your Dr. Davidson Nicol (DN) was not part of Stevens and his APC cabal. Who appointed (DN) as Sierra Leone's Permanent Representative to the United Nations? Your Siaka Stevens was Prime Minister from April 29, 1968. Also, please disprove that (DN) was not involved in the conspiracy to oust Brigadier A.T. Juxon-Smith and his N.R.C.
"Brother" Assensoh, (DN) can be both 'virtuous' to you, and evil to my uncles and fathers, that is the paradox of life.

William Gbing-Gbing O’Bai Konekay Bangura,

When will you stop being silly?

Without any proof, you accuse an innocent man of horrendous complicity or worse and still smiling like the genius Satanic prosecutor that you are you expect me to please disprove that (DN) was not involved in the conspiracy to oust Brigadier A.T. Juxon-Smith and his N.R.C.”.

Don’t you understand that that the onus of proof is on you and others of your ilk.

And in all future time, when talking to me, please stop referring to Siaka Probyn Steven as “Your Stevens”.

I have only seen the mf twice in my life, I am not related to him and he is not “My Stevens “. Intili?

Orbai Cornelius,

Calm down. I am an idiot who believes there is a God, who does not belong to any category. Whenever I make "controversial" statements be assured that I have quadrupled my sources. I never knew that you would be so upset about mentioning Davidson Nicol's involvement with the coup that ousted Brigadier A.T. Juxon-Smith and his N.R.C.
I will never divulge my rational for calling Siaka Stevens, "your Stevens" in a public forum. As I have told you my family--biological, extended and tribal--voted overwhelmingly for the All People's Congress (APC) in the March 1967 elections because of numerous factors including then Prime Minister Sir Albert Margai's (AM) machinations to succeed his brother Sir Milton Margai; (AM)'s misbehavior to my grandfather Bai Farma Tass II, who founded the Sierra Leone People's Party; his imprisonment of a very reputable Themne Imam Alhaji Sheikh Gibril Sesay; the exile of Bai Koblo Pathbana II; and his refusal to appoint then Lieutenant Colonel John Amadu Bangura to be Sierra Leone's first indigenous Force Commander (FC) of the Royal Sierra Leone Military Armed Forces disregarding the advice of the last colonial (FC) Brigadier Blackie.
As you are aware Brigadier John Amadu Bangura will forever be my greatest hero.
I will never apologize for my statements on (DN). If this will be the end of a great relationship so be it. There is a famous Tonkolili proverb, "Or moneh eh bentyeme en kabaneh (Poverty will not impinge on my pride).

William Gbing-Gbing O'Bai Konekay Bangura, Grand Knight Commander from Rochain Kamanda O, Yonibana Chiefdom, Tonkolili District ,

You never knew that  I would be so upset. Now you know.

You should not believe that your various argumentum ad misericordiam, prayers for retribution, your gnashing of teeth or oceans of copious weeping over the execution of Jesus of Nazareth or the Holocaust, or the execution of Colonel al - Gadaffi or of Brigadier John Amadu Bangura, my dear friend brahim Taqi, Aminatta Forna’s father Dr. Mohammed Sorie Forna and the other martyrs is substantive evidence to back your tall claim that. “Davidson Nicol was part of the cabal who executed my Themne  people.”

So far, you have not provided an iota of evidence to support your various claims, other than that Dr. Nicol was made Sierra Leone's Ambassador to the United Nations in 1970 (and there he did a lot of good)

I suppose that using the same useless argument you would also like to indict all the medical doctors who were on the payroll of Pa Shaki’s government on the day of the executions, that they were all Josef Mengele

Have a heart and try to unite that heart with your brain. Please.

To really understand what happened and what was happening, we have to start somewhere near the beginning: About our interminable conversations, you have said a lot, but all this time, I have had my ears cocked, waiting to hear that which up to now, you have not said - that which you most probably do not know, but which Brigadier David Lansana knew ( absolutely) and probably Sir Albert Margai too.

On the other hand, as the saying goes, “Those who know don't talk. Those who talk don't know

By the way, “Themne “ is the name of the language and Temne is the name of the people.

May the Almighty eradicate from us, the spirit of arrogance and conceit and save us from the evil inclination

William ;

Re – Sill in the service of giving oxygen to the dead, please reconsider your words: “I will never divulge my rational for calling Siaka Stevens, "your Stevens" in a public forum.”

Just for the record, since the word is free I pray that you demystify me as to why you “will never” divulge your rationale for decorating Sierra Leone's Siaka Stevens as “my” (Cornelius Edward Hamelberg’s) Siaka Stevens and not “your” Siaka Stevens -

after all, according to unconfirmed rumours which were circulating at the time and which you will probably be kind enough to confirm for all of us here and now, before being accused and tried and executed for treason your beloved Uncle Brigadier John Amadu Bangura (May his soul rest in peace) was Siaka Stevens’ most faithful and trusted lieutenant, some even say ultimate Kingmaker, was busy training guerillas in Guinea Conakry with the sole aim of ensuring that Siaka Stevens be re-instated as the Prime Minister that had been duly sworn in as Prime Minister by Sir Henry (using his discretion that Siaka Stevens commanded a substantial majority in Parliament and was therefore able to form a government).

The joke still is that Albert Akpata Margai’s getaway plane developed engine trouble and when he asked the pilot, “Where are we?” and the pilot replied “We are now flying over Conakry!”” Sir Albert cried, “Lord have mercy!”:Armée Guinéenne. But the pilot managed to steer the plane to relative safety.

Verily, “the evil that men do lives after them “ but for the sake of posterity, you could kindly tell us what you believe were Siaka Stevens’ grievous faults prior to his appointment of Dr. Nicol as Sierra Leone’s ambassador to the United Nations? Surely not that he (Siaka Stevens) insisted on election before Independence?

Sincerely,

O´Bai Cornelius
