On productivity and Nigeria's inter-ministerial committee on job creation
By Augustine Togonu-Bickersteth,London,England
The average Nigerian minister seems to be distracted at least up to the Point of the primaries. For the 2023 elections, for they are believed to have had one leg in Abuja and one leg in their home state or should i add their Hearts are in their states and their legs in Abuja.
Take the minister of labour and employment, he is largely not a minister of labour, employment or productivity
But a minister of Doctors, or Health workers on strike or Lecturers on strike
Beyond “sharing money” or giving hand outs Nigeria should have a solid programme on employment
, labour and productivity/.
Obafemi Awolowo for instance had a vision of 100 per cent employment in Nigeria because he had seen it happen in Izrael, in fact he envisioned a Nigeria with more vacancies than jobs
Employment, labour and productivity is everybody's job. There is supposed to be the American Dream,. The American dream begins and ends with a job, so they say what about the Nigerian Dream? What is the Nigerian Dream about ?should it not include a job? Dreams die fast? Is the Nigerian dream Dead?
To add more on the inter-ministerial committee on job creation. Perhaps the committee members have all gone to sleep. that committee i presume is not about giving handouts or sharing money rather they are supposed to consider collectively how the Nigerian economy can generate the requisite number of jobs given the intervention of the ministries, departments and agencies
And they should be able to measure the number of jobs created by the economy and the rate at which these jobs are being created,
This committee should also be concerned with productivity
There are several ways of making workers productive remuneration is just one-way others include, planning, autonomy, communication, environmental design, time management, tools and Technology, health care, education, training, air conditioning, lighting, clothing, HR management, leadership ergonomically designed furniture, security etc
It seems We only talk about productivity on world productivity day and in Nigeria in a limited way.
