Mr Inyang - his nickname “ heng-am-dae” ( because, just like Michael Jackson’s, the hem of his trousers used to hang a few inches above his shoes) he was Efik, from Cross Rivers State , Nigeria and was our geography teacher in the third form at Secondary school. Sometimes, when challenged about his unorthodox, un-RP English pronunciation, he would defend himself by saying that just like opinion poll pronouncements , and other differences of opinion, so too the pronunciation of English words may vary….
He used to pronounce “vary” as “va-ri” or “very”
How right he was ! That’s what colonialism did to some of Sierra Leone’s colonial subjects who grew up believing that it was their sacred responsibility to protect Her Majesty's Mother tongue from any grammatical deviations or mispronunciations. As we all know, there are also some self-appointed Nigerian versions of the same big grammar police constabulary, trying to be useful or relevant like Man Friday, of whom it was written,

which partly explains why some of them, wannabe Professors of ”Buckingham Palace English” with their King Jimmy manners, their Port Harcourt’s Mile One Market sense of decorum, no sense of humour whatsoever, and their inflated sense of “prestige” ( Inferiority complex) insist on correcting our Ebonics / Creole, Krio / Patois / Broken / Pidgin, believing, most of the time, that such infelicities of language” pollute the air we breathe, because it is” bad” or “inferior” English, …
Some mostly Swenglish- speaking Swedes (native speakers) try to pull the same shit on some foreign guests - he has “an accent” and of course for some people, that’s a grave sin…
(BTW, I’d like to hear Trump rap and Kamala boogie down with the crowd with some of the cool Ebonics that would be convincing…

That was putting it mildly, making them feel under-represented. No exaggeration - they cannot tolerate their passion, their dedication, zeal being understated or underrated. What the grammar police (House Negroes) may view as the “deviations” of Jungle English they want to correct and punish as “violations” - they say that it's a price that they say we must pay for “our civilization.”
