Christian nationalist JD Vance says the Pope should be “cautious” about speaking out on theology. There is only one almighty God, and that is Donald Trump.

The Christian nationalists have had an eventful week.
First, Donald Trump got into an infected argument with the Pope, calling him “weak” and “terrible,” and posting an AI-embarrassed picture of himself as Jesus.
Then, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth held a church service at the Pentagon , where he thought he was quoting the Bible – but in fact he was reading a quote from the cult film “Pulp Fiction.”
And just when you thought the administration couldn’t offend its Christian constituents any more, Vice President JD Vance, a convert to Catholicism himself who has just published a book on the subject, stepped forward. He said that Pope Leo XIV’s words need to be “grounded in truth” (New York Times 4/14) . “I think it’s very, very important for the pope to be careful when he speaks about theological issues,” he explained.
This is what he says about a person whom his own church considers to be the representative of Christ.
But who needs Jesus when you have Donald Trump?
Maybe it was never about the Church of Sweden anyway? Because now even the Vatican is apparently too "woke" for the new right.
In the same way, Jimmie Åkesson's running mate, Mattias Karlsson (SD), attacked the Swedish archbishop. The Church of Sweden is creating a conflict with Swedes who are "pro-nationalist", he claimed indignantly. Sweden Democrats do not feel welcome - this is because Archbishop Martin Modéus has declared that there is no theological basis for combining "nationalist" with "Christian" (DN 7/1).
The conflict is far from new: Attacks on the Church of Sweden are as much a part of Sweden Democrats as those against the media and Muslims. But until now, it has often sounded as if it was about the Church of Sweden . That it is the one that has failed by – unlike the Catholic Church – having a more modern approach to society.
But maybe it was never about the Church of Sweden anyway? Because now even the Vatican is apparently too "woke" for the new right.
And surely one begins to sense a pattern here? If the Pope's words are not considered Christian enough and the Archbishop's theological interpretation is criticized, what words about Christianity are then relevant to listen to?
Perhaps it is as simple as that that the craze for Christianity has never been about religion for these parties. For them, the most important thing is obviously how faith can be used as a weapon against others: to repel those who are not part of the community. The non-Christians – the unwelcome.
