I am delighted to amplify the great news that Professor John Mukum Mbaku,
professor of Economics, at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, will at the
139th Commencement Exercise on April 20, 2012, receive a Presidential
Distinguished Professor Award.
Professor Mbaku was a founding member of the African Studies and Research Forum
(ASRF) along with Professors Julius O. Ihonvbere, George Klay Kieh, Jr., Pita
Ogaba Agbese, Joseph Takougang, Bennett Ade Odunsi and I. He served as
President/Chair of the ASRF for 13 years during which time he worked assiduously
and unselfishly with members of this group, other distinguished colleagues who
joined us later and African scholars in the continent, to produce numerous books
and articles in our disciplines. Moreover, he was for many years an
indefatigable Associate Editor (Africa) of the prestigious Journal of Third
World Studies (of the Association of Third World Studies). In that capacity, he
edited award-wining articles published in this journal. For his spectacular
contributions to the literature in African studies and leadership, he has
received numerous awards.
It is with humility that I extend my congratulations to Professor Mbaku and his
family on this special recognition.
Ike Udogu,

Former Director of Research and Publication

African Studies and Research Forum

Dear Brother Ike:

The ceremony went very well. It ended just a little over an hour ago. It was quite beautiful. Thank you very much for your support. You know the saying "No man is an island." I could not have achieved as much without the superlative assistance and support provided by you, as well as our brothers and sisters in Africa and the Diaspora, notably, members of the African Studies and Research Forum and the Association of Third World Studies (the indefatigable Professor Harold Isaacs, founder). What ever success I have achieved, i consider it yours and theirs as well. I wish to make sure that you and all of our brothers and sisters in the United States, Africa and other parts of the world, know that I owe them a great deal of debt for their support over the years. So, I thank you and them for the generous and unflinching support.

Again, thank you.

John

We congratulate Dr. Wumi Raji, the dramatist, poet, essayist who was sacked unjustly by the UNILORIN and and is currently locked in a battle with OAU as well. A birthday lecture put up by few of his ex students at the OAU campus yesterday was soul lifting event for him. Thanks for Odia Ofeimu who delivered the birthday lecture titled: The Nigerian University System and the Travails of the Intellectual and Dr. Dipo Fashina, former ASUU President who chaired the occasion. Happy 50th birthday, Wumi Raji. The Struggle continues.

There are scholars who publish excellent articles, win numerous awards and make a name among their peers; there are others who do all these and proceed to mentor younger colleagues whom they have never met and for whom they had no obligation to mentor. Prof. Mbaku has done acquitted himself with credit on all fronts and for this, I salute and congratulate you.

Though I have not been priviledged to meet Professor Mbaku in person (and I hope this will happen one day), my interraction with him through his outstanding scholarship speaks volume about the depth of his intellectual prowess and unalloyed devotion to the profession. I was priviledged to be commissioned by AFRICA to review his coedited book, Africa at the Crossroads: Between Regionalism and Globalization. A master piece, I must say. I hereby join others to congratulate him on this well-deserved award.
