Today, May 30, we remember.
Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day is a solemn reminder of one of the most painful episodes in Nigeria's history. For millions of families across the former Eastern Region and beyond, the memories of war are not abstract historical events; they are stories of loss, sacrifice, displacement, resilience, and survival.
History teaches us that nations do not become stronger by suppressing difficult conversations. They become stronger when they are willing to confront their past with honesty, empathy, and courage. The Nigerian Civil War ended in 1970, but many of the questions it raised about belonging, justice, equity, citizenship, and national integration remain relevant today.
Remembering the fallen should not deepen our divisions. Rather, it should challenge us to build a country where every citizen feels seen, heard, and valued; where differences are managed through dialogue rather than conflict; and where political and economic inclusion become the foundations of national stability.
The true heroes of any nation are not only those who fought in war but also those who dedicate themselves to preventing future conflicts through leadership, justice, and institution-building.
As we honour the memories of all who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War, may we also recommit ourselves to the unfinished task of building a Nigeria that works for all its people.
May the departed rest in peace. May the living find wisdom in history. And may our nation continue its journey towards unity with justice.
