Steering AI and Advanced ICTs for Knowledge Societies: a ROAM perspective is the title of the new publication launched by UNESCO at the 2019 Internet Governance Forum.The report, unveiled on 27 November 2019 during an Open Forum titled Formulating Policy Options for Big Data and AI Development, recognizes artificial intelligence (AI) as an opportunity to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through its contribution to building inclusive knowledge societies.

Even as there is a broad consensus that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used to transform different spheres of human activity, we remain in a state of flux when it comes to understanding the influence of this transformation on individuals and societies. At the 40th session of the General Conference, UNESCO Member States discussed this disruptive potential of AI, including in the fields of education, sciences, culture, communication.

The 2019 International Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated in China.
To commemorate the day, the UN Partnership for the Promotion of Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) China Programme has hosted a celebratory event “PRPDTalks: Life 2019” on 26 November 2019.
The partnership is implemented by the ILO, UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, and UNICEF, and the event was hosted under the aegis of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in China, in collaboration with Youren Foundation - a Chinese Organization of Persons with Disabilities.

An important step was taken towards quality education and access to information for all, as UNESCO’s General Conference adopted today a Recommendation on Open Educational Resources (OER).
This new Recommendation will support the development and sharing of openly licensed learning and teaching materials, benefitting students, teachers and researchers worldwide.

There is good news on the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Educational Resources process: UNESCO Member States, at the CI Sector Commission of the General Conference, recommended the adoption of the UNESCO OER Recommendation draft by the Plenary Session of the 40th General Conference next week.
