Films Everywhere, Theatre Somewhere? Musings on the Direction of Theatre in the Postcolony through the works of Prof. Ahmed Yerima
Critical discourse on the evolving landscape of theatre and its relationship with film in postcolonial Africa - one that centers the lived experiences of African theatre scholars and practitioners - is long overdue. As films and film festivals proliferate the global cultural industry, it is becoming increasingly rare to situate the role of theatre and performing arts in shaping cultural imaginations and development in the post colony. So, we ask: are traditional theatre spaces becoming obsolete? Or is there still a privileged place for them in the digital age?
Let's explore these questions and more together at the GRC next-in-series Roundtable where we'll be diving into the world of theatre and performing arts from the lens of Prof. Ahmed Yerima's scholarship.
Prof Ahmed Parker Yerima, a revered playwright, scholar and provocateur par excellence whose career budded at the then University of Ife and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has ignited crucial public conversations and deep reflection on intellectual history and nationalism in postcolonial Nigeria through his plays and essays.
His influence extends far beyond the stage. As the former Director-General/CEO of the National Theatre and Artistic Director of the National Troupe, his leadership amplified Nigeria's cultural voice and soft power on the world stage.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage in stimulating discourse on the future of theatre and performing arts in postcolonial Nigeria.
