The launch of the first-ever audio book in Sierra Leone took place
yesterday Thursday 7th July 2011 at the Leone Preparatory School
situated at King Harman Road in Freetown.

The audio book titled “From West Africa to Palestine” was authored by
the acclaimed Father of Pan-Africanism, the late Dr. Edward Wilmot
Blyden who died almost 100 years ago in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The book was formally launched by Dr. A. Chukwu Dupigny of the
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Publisher of the audio-book, Isa Blyden, the grand-daughter of the
author, in her statement, spoke of the need for the inclusion of audio-
books in the school curriculum. According to her, audio-books help
children to learn faster and speak good English. She said the launched
audio-book would serve as an instrument to persuade the Education
Ministry to incorporate the use of audio-books in the country’s school
curriculum.

Blyden described the launch as a milestone that will greatly improve
education the country.

She explained that the author lived his life as an adventurist who
never shied away from challenging the status quo in order to promote
the kind of society he believed his compatriots should live within.
She described the late man as a prolific writer, a politician,
spokesman, activist and teacher.

“Edward Wilmot Blyden was born in the Virgin Islands as a descendant
of slaves from Africa; he returned back to Africa to make his home in
Liberia and in his later years in Sierra Leone, and lived and worked
at the highest levels of local and national government as well as
international diplomatic service,” she explained.

The late man, she said, lived an exemplary life from 1832 to 1912 and
left behind uncountable legacies.

Formally launching the book, Dr. Chukwu Dupigny, said audio-books
posses the ability to positively transform the country’s educational
system.

He assured that the Ministry will explore the possibility of
introducing audio-books in the school curriculum. While commending the
Publisher, he described the book launch as timely and laudable.

Statements were also delivered by Dr. Kitti Fadlu Deen of the Ballanta
Academy, Dr. Brian Conton, Director of Leone Preparatory School and
Alfred James Shorunkeh-Sawyerr, the grandson of T.J. Sawyerr, the
first Publisher of the book back in 1873.

Chapter Two of the audio book was played out for the audience, and it
was greatly appreciated by all present.
