It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Prof. Mary Clasina Lutta-Mukhebi, who was a great friend and mentor for many of us who worked at Moi University, Kenya. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi died at Eldoret Hospital, Kenya on April 26, 2009. She was the Dean of the School of Human Resources Development at Moi University where she had been teaching since 1987. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi joined Moi University from Kenyatta University where she taught from 1979. Prior to that, she had taught for many years at the Kenya Technical Teachers’ College, Gigiri, Nairobi. She also served as the Chief English Language Examiner at the defunct East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in the 1970s. She started her career as an English language teacher at Nakuru High School in 1967, just after earning her Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree from the State University of New York at Albany in the United States. She received her Masers Degree from the same University in 1973. She defended her Ph.D Dissertation in 1979 entitled “Discrepancies between expressed needs and the competencies received in teacher education programs for bachelor of education English teachers in Kenya” at the Department of Program Development and Evaluation (Curriculum and Instruction) at the State University of New York At Albany. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi was widely published. She published several books and articles in reputable journals. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi was a visiting professor at Mzuzu University in Malawi in 1999-2001. Her work in the community in Kenya was also outstanding. She chaired the Board of Governors of Mukumu Girls’ High School for ten years and during her tenure the school became a national giant in performance in National Exams. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi was one of the founders of the Kakamega-based Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), and served on its Presidential Exploratory Advisory Board until her death. She belonged to many professional organizations such as the African Studies Association (ASA), USA; Kenya Historical Association (KHA); Association of Third World Studies (ATWS), Kenya Chapter; Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dakar, Senegal; Kenya Comparative Education Association (KCEA), Nairobi, Kenya; Organization of Social Science Research in Eastern Africa (OSSREA), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Southern African Comparative and History of Education Society (SACHES) and Academy of Human Resources (AHR). Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi was also widely travelled throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi is survived by one son, Michael Mukhebi, a lecturer in Physics at Egerton University, Njoro, Kenya. Prof. Lutta-Mukhebi will be buried on April 18, 2009 at her residence in Western Kenya.
May God rest her soul in eternal peace.
It is sad to hear of the demise of Prof. Mary Clasina Lutta-Mukhebia a colleague at Moi University, Eldoret Kenya. We were both members of the Senate when I was Head of the Department of Philosophy. She was a resourceful and dynamic person. In whatever she did, she tried to carry people along. She was friendly and dedicated. She will ever be remembered for her contributions to knowledge and humanity. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
