There is something called voluntary poverty, usually practised by stoic personalities to be powerful.

This is based on the principle that he/she who has nothing has nothing to loose and so has nothing to be threatened with.

Personalities like Jesus the Christ, Buddha, etc, used this voluntary poverty tool effectively.
