On that Tinubu Statement about Amotekun and the Yoruba Supremacists
By Gbolahan Gbadamosi (GG)
The much-awaited response of Bola Ahmed Tinubu came today. I had predicted it is a lose-lose for him whether he supports or speaks against Amotekun he would be blamed anyway. As a politician with some experience, he waited carefully and chose his words carefully in that statement today, but he was still blamed anyway. That is his problem and that is why he is the politician with the influence and making the money and not me. When the knocks and punches are thrown at him, he should suck up and live with it. At 67, he is now an old man. To his credit, he usually responds with great maturity and courage. It is a different discussion whether you like him or not. I do not have to as our paths don’t even cross. With the disclaimers over, what are the substantive issues?
There are many writers who knocked Tinubu, regarding his response, but who did not address the entire question and discourse, albeit deliberately. Many people are hiding behind their fingers. We can still see them I’m afraid. I have challenged many die-hard Yoruba supremacists and advocates of Amotekun in, what I consider, a simple way. Please follow my questions.
Is a house divided against itself not bound to fall? If 5 of the 6 Governors establishing Amotekun are from the ruling APC party, why should a major policy decision like Amotekun catch the FG by surprise? If the intention was all positive and selfless and not at all political, why should a programme meant to support FG’s work on security be made public without FG’s knowledge? If the Amotekun project was entirely to help Police work, how come the Police was never taken into confidence at all along the way? Should we try to shave somebody’s head in their absence?
If the 6 Governors know that what they are planning to do requires legal backing of their legislatures, why didn’t they start by enabling the laws on Amotekun before coming out with its launch? This is especially important as money needs to be expended with approval by the same lawmakers. Money is already being spent on publicity, cars and other equipment (which have all been branded by the way) that we don’t even know who approved. If it is our money should it not be approved by parliament before spending it on Amotekun, Kiniun or even Ekun. Sorry, I forgot Governors have security votes which needs no approval. Tomorrow these rascal governors will tell us they’ve spent some billions so far. They might not even tell us how much and we dare not ask because we were busy dancing around, jumping up and down giving them a blanket approval to just spend on. It is the season of Amotekun, all sins are forgiven. Let no one come out tomorrow and accuse these “innocent Amotekun Governors” of owing salaries or mismanaging funds because if they are sensible, they should just point to Amotekun as a massive achievement and cost centre to the 6 States.
Would it not have worked marvellously better for ALL if there was a law in place harmonised among the 6 states; if the FG and Police were involved; if the APC and PDP party machineries were involved in preliminary discussions in the 6 states and at federal level before launching?
Who doesn’t know that there are also some underplaying politics in all of this? Certainly not me. The moment you see the Afenifere Methuselahs jumping up and down, the OPC making some noises and Are Gani Adams taking “charge”, who doesn’t know that both politics and money is blowing around. I am not deceived. While I concede a few are genuine about the whole security thing on Amotekun but the vast majority of these self-appointed protectors of all Yorubas at home and in the diaspora are only looking for relevance and after their pockets. Just be patient, you will soon see them backing out or speaking with both sides of the mouth if “nothing is dropping” for them or if it the shared amount is too small. They will soon start quarrelling about why Lagbaja should be getting less than Tamedu and why Lakasegbe who was not with them at the beginning gets a share.
While we must agree improved security is a positive ask and indeed a right of all of us Yoruba people and all other Nigerians alike. It is entirely dishonest for Yoruba supremacists to pretend as if they do not know that an Amotekun success is a backdoor entry into regional governance. This is why the Igbos are watching all of the evolving drama with rapt attention. They must be thinking, all these noise around Amotekun is it not what we have been asking for? Have the Yorubas not the been the most vocal antagonist of the Igbo requests? The Yoruba supremacists should be prepared to support the Igbo equivalent of Amotekun, it would probably be called “Ọdụm” (Lion in Igbo). In another one year the entire country will be protected by different wild animals from every ethnic group militias. We must support all of them equally.
It is time for a honest introspection and self-evaluation. Yoruba people who are involved in this self-deceit should come out of their pretence. Yes, I completely agree we need to re-evaluate our relationship as a nation. It is not only that we are all not happy, it is also that the relationship is not working. Yoruba supremacists should quit pretending and look in the mirror. My point is that this noise is beyond Amotekun, which is only being used as a rallying point. Let us say what it is.
