My People:

As someone wrote elsewhere, there is no bad time to do a good thing.
We must also understand that if you don't support an act, there is no good time to do it, no matter the pretence otherwise.

There is another principle to live by:. Delay to do bad, and hurry to do good.

PMB has done good, in just the time he has the power to.  One wished Obasanjo or Yar'Adua or Jonathan had the same goodwil towards MKO/June 12, although GEJ went half-way with his botched renaming of UniLag after MKO.

With respect to Kingibe, the Yoruba say that if you do not like one of both yam or oil, you will eat both together simply because you like one of them, and yet you must eat, and can't eat one without the other.

So we the Yoruba  will understand why Kingibe, as odious as his post-annulment behavior was, has to be honored along with Abiola, the winner.  After all, we cannot prove that Abiola would have won with someone else on the ticket.  So we invite the rest of the country to understand that with us.

And there you have it.

Very impressive.  Honor is given to whom honor is due.  This sort of thing only happens in serious nation...great to see our own Naija doing things one would only expect from serious nations.  Well done, PMB.  You made all of us in the progressive movement immensely proud.  You made all of us, citizens, immensely proud.   We salute the brave men and women who worked hard during the June 12 struggle.... it is their (and to small extent our) sacrifice that resulted in the nascent democracy we now enjoy....and certainly it wass due to their efforts that today's momentous announcement could remotely become a reality.  The June 12vers are the real heroes of our democracy....and we owe them boku.  Blessed be Naija and all its good citizens.  Blessed be our June 12 heroes.  It is a jolly good day for Naija and all its (good) citizens.

I ask again: what was the public stand taken by Muhammadu Buhari at the time of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election? I am surprised that serious persons are falling for this naked political ploy (this laughable toying with June 12), which has not even been executed in accordance with the letter and spirit of applicable laws. Considering the timing, it would appear that the real purpose of this hasty political toying with June 12 is to vindictively minimize Olusegun Obasanjo's place in history due to the latter’s recent criticisms of the political leadership shortcomings of the former. This cheap political ploy also comes across to me as an unsuccessful attempt to divert the country’s attention from urgent and biting real life challenges, such as the clear and present danger posed to the lives of many, across the country, by herdsmen who are openly armed with weapons of mass destruction.

Victor,

We know Buhari was silent during the IBB and Abacha eras. Having been  overthrown by IBB,he worked in the Abacha govt.

I also expect many, if not most people, are also sensitive to the political calculations at play in this situation.

I wonder, though, if it will travel far in the SW.

The euphoria of the pro-Buhari/Tinubu/AC/CPC 2015 alliance has been brutally destroyed by Buhari, as far as I can see.

Many have concluded  that more Buhari= more right wing Fulani terrorism, more ethnic impunity, more ignorant badmouthing of Nigerians when he goes abroad, uncoordinated economic policies etc.

The majority might not be moved by Buhari's new strategies but what about the elite? Saraki, Fashola, Fawehimi, Tinubu etc?

These are people whose brands have been damaged by their presence with the current govt. As for Saraki, the linking of the Kwara robbery story to him is not looking good.  Even if the issue is made to disappear, I wonder if such disappearance will not be linked to an exchange for 2019 support for Buhari.

With Soyinka, various SW public intellectuals like Pius Adesanmi and others on board in the 2015 struggle with Buhari agst GEJ,, expectations were high, yet the journey did not lead to a happy destination as expected.

So, the SW elite have been on this road before in recent times.

Now there is no common enemy in GEJ. The person who is the problem is Buhari himself.

Will Soyinka turn round and do another about face on Buhari after  becoming his critic, post-2015,  like he did before 2015, repudiating his own  critique sustained for years? Will the media, such as the formidable work of Sahara Reporters agst the GEJ govt, be mobilized in support of Buhari?

Soyina's credibility has been given a serious beating by Buhari's antics. Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, is promoting  himself and his youth/ non-politician/professional brand  as an antidote to the gerontocratic  ossification and crudity of the brand represented by Buhari  and the permanent fixtures of Nigerian politics he symbolizes  who came to power young and yet still insist on grabbing the stage into old age.

I doubt if there can be  any significant Southern Nigerian mobilization for Buhari on social media as took place towards 2015. I get the impression that Buhari has lost the majority of Southerners, the gains from having an incumbent he was being positively contrasted with, in opposition to that incumbent,  destroyed by himself.

As for the SW, what, really, can Buhari offer the SW in terms of concrete political gains?

Its now clear that Osinbajo is not in the running for the Presidency. Its also clear, in my view, that whatever he represents does not define, in any prominent manner, the administration he shares with Buhari.

Its also clear that Buhari's health is being well managed by the miracle doctors in the UK, so a recurrence of a Yaradua/GEJ scenario that would place Osinbajo in the Presidential seat is not realistically on the table.

Buhari wins and Osinbajo  remains VP. So? In an environment that is defined by Arewaism, adopting Farooq Kperogi.

The SW is in need of new leadership. Tinubu has been defanged by Buhari, the recent resurrection of Tinubu as APC internal ambassador not doing much for Tinubu's  image after the years of minimal significance in the current govt. The projection to the political centre that the AC/CPC alliance promised on the back of supporting a person who goes agst all the values traditionally associated with the SW after the defining stamp of Awo has been shown to be a  hollow dream, an achievement emptied of its political clout.

Fashola has been demystified by the seeming impossibilities of his ministerial position, in which his grandstanding about power generation in the GEJ era has been used to mock his own problematic performance. OBJ might not be readily describable as a SW leader, but he has been putting in effort to include the SW base, represented by Afenifere,  that was not for the Buhari alliance, into his coalition.

I doubt if we shall see a SW/Muslim North alliance of the broad based 2015 kind in the next five years.

The SW needs to go back to the drawing board to decide where they stand in Nigeria.

thanks

toyin

Having just come out of jail and rehabilitated by Abacus  from a position of personal destructionsupervised by INN if you were Buhari would you be championing June 12 knowing Abacus could liquidate both you and winner?

What of the progressives who chose to abandon the winner in gaol and chose to gentrify Abachas govt?

To reinforce .human rights supremo Agbakobas comments. It was clear to me the only reason Kingibe took the foreign ministry post from Abacha was on tribalistic grounds knowing the mandate is indivisible. Unbeknownst to Aare Abiola Kingibe was a plant in the lose-lose manipulation schemes into the whole process so that  if Bashir Tofa did not defeat the Aare IBB could annul the whole process  and hand over to his deputy via the ruse of the Interim Govt on behalf of the Northern Oligarchy who were not prepared to relinquish power and for whom the Nigerian military top echelon was only a surrogacy.

After all IBB stated cryptically that he knew those who would not succeed him

But more importantly had Aare Abiola listened to the pro democracy lobby and chosen somebody else IBB would have still annulled tbe elections for the same frivolous reasons for the same constant: lack of political will to share full powers equitably with the South and using the command of the Nigerian military to turn the institution to an army of occupation.

OAA.
