Why hasn't the other big powers(China and  Russia)who are not US allies, in collaboration with  the Arab League and the UN, taken decisive steps to end the war in Gaza?

Excellent question, Chidi!

I have a similar one from the perspective of scholars like myself who study the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human rights violations, and have written and spoken profusely about the causes and consequences of these atrocity crimes, how they can be prevented, and why the states and people who perpetrated  and/or perpetrate them must be punished.

The question is: what is the utility of what we study and speak about if the states and governments to whom we direct our scholarship  ignore it, in the face of atrocities, and all that the scholars who propound theories and policies, but  have no armies and power to enforce them, can do is squirm in their seats or lend harmless signatures to protest letters?

Just a thought!

Dear Ed:

You may be confusing the roles of scholars with those of others: bureaucrats, policymakers, politicians, etc.

Your job as a scholar probably ends when you have proposed your solutions and theories. You are not the one to apply them. But you can become an activist. Or, like a former colleague, a professor of history, become a politician and head of state.

A scholar is not a priest, argued Ibn Khaldun centuries ago.

If i may chime in on edward kissi’s question
For many years i have been a “Country specialist” for amnesty international, and every one who works for them or any equivalent group like human rights watch or the many un groups or committee for the protection of journalists, etc., asks themselves the same question. There are short term results, which we never get, but then longer term ones we do often get, at least for individuals. We worked on behalf of imprisoned journalists in burundi, and after some time they were released. I do believe the protests helped them.
Aside from individuals, calling a state into account for torture is hard, but when bbc picks up the story and headlines it, there are national pressures that might result.
I don’t care if the u.k. Had a bad past in africa, if i can use them today to pressure some state to stop torturing or disappearing people.
If i had to ask a state to be pure before it spoke out, NO ONE would fit that bill.

Chidi,

Professor Harrow is merely being duplicitous when he says,” Ask iran”.

Don’t mind him. He’s up to no good. He's only trying to be mischievous. I intuit that he hates the Mullahs in Iran. Exactly what I would have told Hamlet and saved him the ordeal of daggering Polonius is also sound advice for those who advocate the continuation of deaf and dumb Genocide Joe shuffling along for another few years in the corridors of the White House, and not as an easy rider the saddle or as leader of the so called “ free world” :

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain

Thank God that the Palestinian Scholar Edward Said as a son of the soil wrote on the Israel - Palestine Conflict.

(I trust him more than a servile Kofi Annan pontificating about anything and saying nothing)

In December last year a member of the Turkish Parliament collapsed in parliament while criticising Israel

Leo Varadkar criticised Israel and resigned a day later. Perhaps, no causal connection.

We may have to check out the Israel vs Arab Map once again in order to understand that The Arab Street is asking exactly the same question that you are asking. Israel after all is less than the size of a postage stamp on those maps and I've heard it said so many times that all the Arabs have to do is get together and spit -on collective, mega-gob of spit in the direction of Tel Aviv, and the miscreants there - the Mecca of the gay, would all drown.

The Arab Street and Izzy know that should Uncle Sam  go down, that would be the end of their so-called “Holy” land. So Arab Street is praying that if Uncle Sam’s house should catch a fire just as Malcolm X  said in The House Negro and the Field Negro , “But then you had another Negro out in the field. The house Negro was in the minority. The masses--the field Negroes were the masses. They were in the majority. When the master got sick, they prayed that he'd die. [Laughter] If his house caught on fire, they'd pray for a wind to come along and fan the breeze.”

The Arab Street are the Field Negroes.

To be more inclusive, in addition to the Arab League you could add Türkiye which was the headquarters of Islamic POWER in the good old days of The Ottoman Empire until - inspired by British intelligence agent T. E. Lawrence ( popularly known as Lawrence of Arabia ) the Arabs revolted against what they perceived to be Turkish dominance (and other factors).

Knowledge is king! In Confessions of a British Spy (a HAKIKAT KITABEVI publication) Chidi can read all about Britain’s covert and overt role in The creation of the Saud Dynasty which started with Muhammad ibn Abd-al-Wahhab

Of course also add the kinds of real pressure that could be exerted by The Islamic Republic of Iran ( and the threat of a few missiles with love from Hezbollah), pressure from Indonesia, Malaysia, indeed Nigeria, and all the other members of the OIC

There was the Abraham Accords brokered by President Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner  which thanks to October 7th and Israel's genocidal response as the aftermath is now totally f-kkk-d  and will remain on the backburner for at least another century or face revolution from the Arab Street, revolutions that would be much more dramatic than Arab Spring 1.

Rumour has it that some of the richest members of the Arab League are afraid that if they threaten even symbolic military action all the liquid assets and cash which they have stashed away in American Banks for safe keeping might be frozen. Moreover, they would not like to see their skyscrapers levelled down to the ground to dust and rubble as is being witnessed happening in Gaza….

Check this out : Jonathan Pollard : Israel will annex Jordan

There’s also the Rafah - Sinai Re-settlement program for Gaza Palestinians in the offing  - but I doubt that El-Sisi can, could or would be willing to give a green light for that.

Post-Ramadan expect phase 2

Phase 3 is going to be the cemetery

hi all, not being duplicitous. i don't think any long term solution to the middle east comes without the underlying iran/saudi-uae split being addressed. american foreign policy backs the saudis, but hexbollah and the houtis and the shiites in iraq, not to mention the palestinians, sunni though they be, are going to go away. they need to work out solutions together
and i doubt you could find a grain of difference between said's views on this and my own. i trust his judgments enormously.

Corrections and a postscript 👍

Just for the record, should read : (To Chidi :

“We may have to check out the Israel vs Arab Map once again in order to understand that The Arab Street is asking exactly the same question that you are asking. Israel after all is less than the size of a postage stamp on those maps and I've heard it said so many times that all the Arabs have to do is get together and spit - one collective, mega gob of spit in the direction of Tel Aviv, and the miscreants there - “the Mecca of the Gay”, would all drown.”

(Possible charges of homophobia and genocide there  - like God’s wrath visited upon the Torah’s Sodom and Gomorrah

”...also sound advice for those who advocate the continuation of deaf and dumb Genocide Joe shuffling along for another few years in the corridors of the White House, and not as an easy rider in the saddle or as leader of the so called “ free world” : Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain

P.S. To paraphrase The Last Poets a little, I get irritated with scholars who are only busy writing big books or playing basketball whilst the enemy is cutting off our balls.

It’s interesting that Iran is being mentioned, since according to the Hebrew calendar  today is the Fast of Esther in the run up to PURIM

Whilst it is true that the Judeo-Christian Western Media is rock solid on the side of Israel’s‘ War Cabinet - we should not lose sight of how some of the religious elements of the House of Judah see things a little differently as they look upon on what’s going on in Gaza and the West Bank , so, for example I got this email message which I’ll edit a little to give you an idea of what Hamas’ enemies think :

The message is captioned ” When our enemies seek our destruction” : Today's Fast of Esther is an especially propitious time to set aside our Purim charity to fulfil the mitzvah of Matanos l'Evyonim. Through this holy act we will invoke HaShem’s mercy and redemption in these most difficult times. As Rebbe Nachman teaches in Sefer HaMidos:

"Through charity, a person can defeat his enemies with a minimum of effort, as Hashem will save him from even their greatest attacks."

Let's unite , in the long-standing tradition of our Breslov leaders, and raise life-saving funds for hundreds of members of our community's most vulnerable families.

These families include widows, orphans, and those struggling with debilitating illness, injury, and loss. Among these families are many Torah scholars who are teaching our children and guiding the next generation of our leadership…May we experience the true joy of Purim and merit the complete, final redemption speedily in our days! “

For further elucidation about the appropriateness of the the title from a Torah point of view, check it out :  Torah : When our enemies seek our destruction

I thought that China had made a sincere and durable peace between the custodians of the two holy mosques and Iran, that a friend of my enemy is my enemy , and that the war in Yemen is over. Surely, the Sunnis cannot love Israel more than they love their brothers and sisters in Islam?

I woke up this morning thinking about Amatoritsero Ede’s Children of Hitler

It’s day 12 of Ramadan; For the starving masses of Gaza what’s Sheri and Iftar?

“Sisters, brothers and the whities

Blacks and the crackers

Police and their backers

They're all political actors”

That was  the beginning of Curtis protesting the Vietnam War. ”And Nixon talking about don't worry”, the title of the song, (Don't worry) if there's a hell below we're all going to go

Genocide ? Holocaust prevention?

In the name of speaking truth to power, just try  telling Benjamin Netanyahu or any of his holy IDF crew, “ Don't worry: if there's a hell below we're all going to go “ or better still, “ Don't worry: you are all surely going to go to the hell below”

Or ask them, isn’t it written in your Bible, as one of the Ten Commandments, Commandment Number Six (not six million) “Thou Shalt Not Kill” ?

but just ask them , and exclaim “Genocide!” -

just one word

or weep about the long-suffering Palestinians, and your ass,

whether diesel, ordinary, black, super, scholarly, journalistic, poetic,

polemic or professorial, or professional your ass will be charged

Anti-semite !

In other words, your ass will be transubstantiated to grass.

Real grass.

The fact is that the IDF massacres in Gaza are a thousand times more inexcusable than

the marauding Janjaweed militias spilling blood effective ethnic cleansing in Darfur,,,

Thanks to Chidi for asking the question on everybody’s mind, everybody being you, me, we, us, the Arab Street of fellow human beings, J Street

Ands thanks to Edward Kissi (such a nice, flirtatious name, you don't need any further introduction as to intention or expertise, kiss, kissy, Professor Kissy - did I hear that right? Last night, I went through all the references he gave us and more) As per the definitions of genocide that he outlined HERE  fifteen years ago, clearly Israel’s on-going onslaught and their mass slaughter in Gaza, fulfils all the criteria required to indict their sorry ass/ asses of genocide at Nuremberg 2 or the ICC at The Hague

Hopefully, henceforth, “Gaza as Twilight of Israel Exceptionalism: Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Unprecedented Crisis to Unprecedented Changepublished on line on 5th of March 2024 will impact the efforts to stop  the ongoing genocide in Gaza and to bring the chief miscreants to justice.

From North to South, East to West,  God bless the great continent of Africa and Diaspora. We are to suppose that Arab & Allies  are also praying for special blessings on South Africa and the lawyers who took up the matter of Genocide in Gaza to the ICJ

God also bless activists such as Norman Finkelstein impinging on the world’s attention through his strong media presence  - ditto Jeffrey Sachs , the Rt.Hon. George Galloway, on a daily basis, Scott  Ritter, and others.

On this people’s planet, what would Ibukunolu Babajide (IBK) have been saying if he was with us today?

The word complicity over Gaza,  is gaining currency in this sordid mess - complicity of the US and most of the EU  ( the parties that comprise the government coalition in Sweden, all support Israel)

BTW, from the very beginning, all Netanyahu needed to do was to rally the International Community and its agencies to issue a warrant for the arrest of those responsible for the massacres of 7th October.

Hopefully, Alagba Kissi’s shock and awe post about AFROCENTRIC SPIRITUALITY, BRAZIL AND YORUBA could be transferred to head a new thread, because Cornelius Ignoramus is asking in a still small voice of what relevance is such epistemological gobbledygook or even Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, here, in this thread?

That was a question.

In my view if the Yoruba deities / mindset do not contribute to elucidating or solving the problems we're facing the intrusion is unjustifiable and akin to throwing a spanner in the works, if you’d forgive the expression, but for more mischief, unlike your portrait gallery of polytheistic deities and their human representatives, here's the strictly monotheistic
