The USA-African Dialogue Family,

I am sourcing historical accounts and other scholarly papers on the phenomenon of tribal marks (facial) in Africa. I will appreciate a broad African literature but a concentration on the South West of Nigeria.

This is an area that steps outside of my comfort zone of Business and Management literature, so please do treat my request as one seeking complete guidance from a naïve position.

Can you please point me in the right direction? [gbola.g...@gmail.com]

Many thanks,

I would be careful to use the right terminology.  I  tend to say "identification marks" instead of tribal marks but I am still searching for a better term.

It is a form of surgery so facial surgery may be a candidate. Facial scarification

may be another possibility although when I looked up the term I realized that  it is

often associated with artwork these days.

Colonial anthropologists often used terms to devalue rather than to uplift.

Thank you Gloria.

I do understand your point that comes with a subtle alert. I am fairly familiar with the colonial baggage that comes with the term "tribe". I used it deliberately to be more inclusive at this initial stage of my search since most of the earlier documentation and scholarly reports seems to use it. I do not intend to stick with it as I develop the work I intend my request for. I do like "identification marks" as you suggested but this is somewhat restrictive since these marks go further than merely identifying I believe.

I do appreciate your time and useful advise.

Dear Prof,
Based on your request for appropriate reference, "identification marks" appear appropriate than "tribal" or "scarification" marks. "tribal" or "scarification" appear derogatory. Facial marks among other objectives serve primarily the purpose of identification.
Thank you.

Hello GG,

Though your concern is the South West of Nigeria (Yoruba I guess), for general literature, you can also read Ekhaguosa Aisien's Iwu: The body markings of the Edo people, (Revised Edition) Aisein Publications, Benin City2011. Regards.

Uyi

Thank you Uyi.

For ease of assess, I intend to focus on a South West sample but clearly I will seek broader based information and literature. Hence yours is useful and helpful. Thanks again.
