everything he says and does, be it pronouncements on the virus, or decisions on the environment, have deadly consequences for human kind.
why would people want to vote for this?

I would argue, Ken, that the “law of self-interest” explains this phenomenon. It trumps rationality and ideology. The action of the DOJ exonerating General Flynn of culpability in the Russian saga following the 2016 election exemplifies this opinion—leaving institutionalists, like brother John Mbaku, scratching his head. Institutionalists believe, among other things, that good institutions exist to further the legitimacy of any regime especially when the political system is attacked by rogue politicians.

Apparently, this kind of ABSOLUTISTIC pontification characterizes DOGMATISM. Those who parade such absolutes should have correspondingly supportive evidence.

Have you ever considered the complex point that what is NOT rational may not necessarily be irrational? — and that besides the rational and the irrational, we also have the NON-RATIONAL? Standard (or formal) logic essentially involves the ideal (crucially and rightly so), and lived experience often encompasses and surpasses the logic In question  In science (in general) and everyday life (in general), we (more or less) encounter certain knowns or quasi unknowns, certain known unknowns, and limitless unknown unknowns. Why? Probably because we are in the final analysis HUMAN beings (by default efficient AND deficient bings?). The paradox or antinomy of humanity!? ....

i agree completely. i also see, in addition to the real sense of self-interest that most republicans feel a republican regime will afford them an additional component for many. maybe even a third of republicans, who are not simply winking at his deficiencies, or who say they don't really matter--after all, they got the supreme court people they want, the tax changes they want, the money they want--but the real enthusiasts, the people who rise up and shout. the racists. the bigots. the xenophobes, the jingoists. the nationalists who believe fervently in the superiority of the u.s. or of white race or of men, the fundamentalists or god's knows what. all those he calls "good people." the other 2/3 of republicans are willing to align with this group, the populists, the extremists, and the neofascists. and they despise obama or clinton or, frankly, people like me who consider themselves progressives.

ours is a divided country; the republicans used to be, but now under trump those in opposition to his brand of no-knowthingism have retreated almost completely. there is romney who resists. anyone else?

you can push it: we have rational and irrational numbers. but the square root of minus one can't be placed into either category, so it is called imaginary. yet it is a factor used in determining questions of quantum and space time.
on simple logic, i like your point that the simple binary of rational/irrational doesn't define everything human or what surpasses the human.
