Now, this is one of the truly great ones that stood at the forefront of the ideological battles against all forms of hegemonic hordes against Africa. May his rest in peace.

As a graduate student, I read some of Professor Samir Amin’s works. As I recall, Professor Amin most importantly brought into sharp focus and forcefully critiqued, hegemonic Eurocentrism’s claim of universalism even though it is and remains a particular way of viewing and framing human reality.  As he put it, hegemonic Eurocentrism represents “a culturalist phenomenon” which “claims that imitation of the Western model by all peoples is the only solution to the challenges of our time…It projects itself as model humanity, the center of rational thought and behavior, the center of social justice and the center of progress.” Amin went on to explain that hegemonic Eurocentrism is actually “anti-universalist,” for it does not explore “possible general laws of human evolution.” It’s notable that Amin’s passing and thoughts are being remembered on a day that the USA is observing the anniversary of last year’s bloody White Supremacist re-assertion of itself in Charlottesville, Virginia, for a key moral of his works was to warn the world that “if the West remains locked into the positions that it has dictated in every area of political relationships, most notably North-South and East-West relationships, the risks of violent conflicts and of an increase in brutal racist positions will grow.”
