Sarah, who was born in Dahomey, West Africa, in 1843, started life as a baby called Omoba Aina. Tragically, her parents were killed by slave-trading ruler King Ghezo, a tyrant who liked to practice human sacrifice.

Ghezo kept the little girl captive until Royal Navy Captain Frederick Forbes – who was on a mission to convince the King to end his involvement in the slave trade – discovered Sarah.

Amazing story! Someone looked down at as never to own even a proverbial hut over her head, has become one with untold mansions. Thanks for sharing!

(I never knew October is the Black History Month in the UK. I only know that it's February in the US. Maybe we need 10 more nations of the world to adopt the other10 months as their Black History Months, and we will have our history studied and heard all-year long)!

Thank you for the information. A picture of her at a younger age was published in the book in two volumes of Frederick Forbes (1851)
