Sorry, I omitted to say that in the first place, the BBC link was forwarded to me by an honourable Nigerian Bro. Below this paragraph is his reply to the letter to him that I posted. I’m sure that you will all agree with the essence of his thrust although personally, I’m not too happy about the overgeneralization in this one sentence: “So I am disappointed not only in the crooked people who want to rule by all means, but more so on the elite who for a variety of reasons fail to see or acknowledge the obvious.”
The whole letter:
My dear brother,
I used to be a strong believer in the African project despite multifaceted challenges acknowledged in some of my books. But from Nigeria to Sudan to Haiti and many other places peopled and governed by my people, the ruling elite has continued to be increasingly reckless in disregard of the will and the welfare of the people. And the fact that the people have little or no ability to determine who rules over them is both cause and effect that illustrates the above point. So I am disappointed not only in the crooked people who want to rule by all means but more so in the elite who for a variety of reasons fail to see or acknowledge the obvious. Thank you for your insight and have a blessed day. Regards! “
Interestingly enough, what he says about the culpability of the elite is not radically different from what Presidential Brother Muhammadu Buhari said many years ago n in this Achebe Interview :
Nigeria: A Meeting of the Minds (Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in Conversation with Pini Jason)

Baba Kadiri,
It would seem that by their names shall ye know them.
So, with what flying colours does the BBC’s Peter Okwoche the main presenter for “Focus on Africa” emerge from this Ethnic Identification Parade, assuming that it should be ascertained by name only?
Not that I should in any way want to impugn his veracity, objectivity, impartiality, sexuality or indeed his neutrality, bearing in mind what the bard sang:
“Ya either got faith or ya got unbelief and there ain't neutral ground”
It’s astounding that the BBC should stick their neck out like this, trustingly, even daring to present the not so holy trinity of Messrs Chiagozie Nwonwu, Peter Mwai & Karina Igonikon’s visions of an alternate reality as Gospel Truths!
They must surely be up to some mischief.
On the other hand is it reasonable to expect that the BBC World News Service should not dabble in a little bit of ethnic politics, try their hand at remaining relevant, at least to the South Eastern Segment of Nigeria?
In that regard, I shouldn’t quite agree with Philosophy Professor Segun Ogungbemi that “ The BBC should mind their own business and leave Nigeria alone”, when not minding their own business is their profession, their business.
Ditto with the first round of the Presidential Elections in Turkiye.
The Wild West Press was busy rooting for the opposition candidate. Already counting his chickens before the eggs hatched, Turkiye’s Peter Obi was already dancing the victory dance.
Chidi ought to write a poem about this.
Which reminds me, I danced to Brer Buhari’s May 2105 election victory in Turkiye, with a bunch of Iranians who were staying/visiting the same hotel. It was on the same day that the Iran nuclear deal was ratified.
The BBC of course still looks upon Nigeria with a benign gaze as a former British colony, to quote former crime minister David Cameroon in that leaked conversation with Her Majesty, to wit that, unlike the UK, Nigeria is " fantastically corrupt". That was Cameron’s judgement seven years ago, and although times may have changed - for the better- it would seem that that sort of polluted perception of good Commonwealth member Nigeria lingers on, you know, the dread feeling, “ What good can come out of Nazareth? “
Well, you saw Nigeria’s main presidential wannabes trotting over to Chatham House to pay their respects and give their assurances that during their watch there will be no boycott of the former Colonial Master - that nothing dangerous should be expected to come from them, that it’s going to be business as usual and if need be frequent consultations with them over there in London, for instance when visiting for medical consultations… etc etc
I suppose that the unholy trinity would like Obi to take the oath of loyalty, to His Majesty, just like any other good House Negro.

I fully agree with Chidi.
“But the enemy I see
Wears a cloak of decency” ( Slow Train)
It’s not as if the BBC is a saint or the BBC
is wholly righteous, infallible or “holy”
This kind of article in all its sordid, malicious detail - mostly manufactured - pulled out of thin air - the discrepancies based on hearsay and suspicious/ unreliable, inofficial and unverified/unverifiable sources, does not deserve to be featured on any BBC website. It certainly does not enhance the BBC’s reputation, not even in Nigeria. The aim of the article is to undermine and ridicule Nigeria's competence in conducting something as simple as a free and fair election and at the end of the day, to question the legitimacy of the declared winner of the elections, the President-Elect.
It’s a form of racism, really.
Did they ever feature a similar article from the most vociferous and of course more advanced American press, about Dear Donald Trump’s contention that his mandate was stolen? Surely the BBC is not a tabloid like “The Sun” and the “ News of the World” - or should the entry standards for slanderous and libellous articles be lowered when the BBC is dealing with Nigeria, just because they do not fear that there will be any repercussions, just a lot of hot air?
The world is familiar with the BBC’s antisemitic biases, you read that right, The BBC’s ANTISEMITIC BIASES, the BBC’s antisemitism, without a doubt quite a lot of BBC ANTISEMITISM, even though they keep on denying some of the charges and protesting piously, that they are not at all biassed, they are always against man’s inhumanity to man and forever on the side of Human Rights and Justice, that they only plead guilty to mostly showing bloody footage of atrocities and transgressions, such as the gunning down in cold blood, of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh
Now if the BBC can be anti-Semitic then can the BBC not also be other things such as even a little anti-democratic, anti-Nigeria, or even un-African?
To counteract media bias, deliberate distortions, misinformation and all the mischief that can result from that, Nigeria needs something like CAMERA, to help put things right. Perhaps a CAMERA-like response does not necessarily have to only come from the Government’s aggrieved Ministry of Information or Communication; independent media should also be able to dement spurious reporting and thus salvage the good name of the country, wherever the good name of the country is being tarnished.
Bribery and corruption come in many forms and under all kinds of disguises. Of course, here the BBC does not make any pretence that this is s supreme case of “ investigative journalism”; I daresay it’s suggestive of some underhand dealings at play - a favour granted, perhaps without a fee paid or an invitation to lunch or a promise of holidays at the Bahamas, all expenses paid
The headline itself apart from being contentious is deliberately provocative It's not just the “mystery” aspect with the underlying dark hint at 419-type criminality to be expected from the “fantastically corrupt” To the Sherlock Holmes super sleuths in the Commonwealth, and those of an Edgar Allan Poe type of imagination “Mystery” here implies “There's something rotten in the state of Denmark”
