Subject: RE: THE MALIAN COUP MISADVENTURE AND ITS RIPPLE EFFECTS
Dear Mr. Olukotun, good afternoon.
Trust this mail finds you well and you are staying safe at this time.
Reference the above subject, this rejoinder is premised on the content of yours on the subject as contained in your column; "Friday Musings with....Ayo Olukotun", published on the back page of The Punch Newspaper of Friday, 21 August, 2020.
I align my thoughts with most of your analysis on the subject, howbeit, i would like to contribute that some Countries, especially in Africa still require a focused Military Government to provide the proper political governance direction and in some other instances, a systemic and sustained civil protests (like the Arab spring of some years back which started in Tunisia) to refocus politicians into proper governance of their respective Countries including Nigeria.
The above is my strong belief and without any of the above or combination of both, we (the governed) would keep wallowing in
abject poverty.

Sincerely
Michael E. C. ABUGO, FDM. FIBM
Top 50 Global Marketing & Advertising Leader Recipient, MADcon 2019.

the military effectively run the show in lots and lots of countries in africa, even when the president and his party are elected. my sense is that they remain in power because they are rewarded economically. examples? egypt, burundi, congo, etc. you can add more to the list.
others like senegal are not run by the military.
i'll state that in countries like egypt the overwhelming control of the economy is in the hands of the military; that is true of burundi as well.
as for the ordinary citizen benefiting from military "order," it is the opposite. the exploitation of the real resources of the country, like minerals, is controlled by the few generals and their troops and supporters, the govt is paid off, and the poor
get nothing. nothing.
it is true injustice, which explains the periodic uprisings, and explains why the military put down popular uprisings.

it is important to distinguish where this is the case and where it is not. i have no idea why this coup occurred in mali. i hope the uprising succeeds in byelorus, and i loved every instance of the arab spring. it seems to have succeeded in tunisia; it was quashed by the military in egypt and in syria, the worst case of repression one can imagine.

i find it naive to imagine that a military coup is a solution to a bad govt. but nothing is absolute here.

I concur with this position as it has the capacity to cure African leadership madness that has over the years infested the masses with voiceless epidemic increasingly evolving into helplessness and extinction.

but what can you do if the "african leadership madness" is in fact vested in, supported by, the military? what good did it do nigeria when abacha took over?
or when mobuto took over? those were military coups.

There has to be a better way of changing governments than by gun-toting people who more often than not, have no idea of what government is. There is something inherently wrong with the argument that concludes by saying that the military can overthrow a legitimately elected government. That you can think of only one, is a testimony. I concede the point that sometimes we need to change a government that has overstayed. The question we need to get an answer to is how we change such a government without resort to arms by the people we pay to defend us from external aggression?.

there were major street protests; keita jailed the opposition. the military stood by and permitted it. so in a sense, they did not really overthrow this govt, which had lost its legitimacy, but stopped them from continuing to rule illegitimately. parallel, the belarus military/police are permitting the govt to stay in power, despite an illegiimate election and enormous protests.

Dear Folks,
If I have my way, I will suggest that the Malian junta be given a chance to pluck off this budding personality politics instead of institutional politics in Africa. Democracy historically evolve from militocracy/ autocracy. Pure democracy cannot emerge until actors find enough decisive totalitarian leadership which is best given unquestionable military dictatorship we no de look face. Example, Ghana leadership is trading with caution because of the fear of Lawrence which to them is the beginning of wisdom. Pure democracy attained after autocracy relapse again to dictatorship. The circle then is completed. However, autocracy is better from military system of hierarch and chain of command. Because extreme exercise of personality power can easily be checked than with the civilian leader who can turn governance into family or personal enterprise.

Many of us detest coups in Africa, especially senseless coups. Yet, in my African history class,  some very smart and very alert American students compared to African politics, what is happening in America now between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden  They lamented that Mr. Trump and his family were trying hard to "steal" the November 3rd U.S. presidential election by pumping fear into Americans that if Mr. Biden (whom he calls "Sleepy Joe") wins, America will be in total chaos.  These students cited  the convention speeches.

Also, the students added in unison: Mr. Trump filled up a presidential plane with expensive fuel to travel to Helsinki,  Finland  (which Mr. Trump reportedly thought was par of Russia, wrote Mr. Bolten in his book) to meet Mr. Putin of Russia, a Communist leader. He also did similarly twice to consort with North Korea's dictator Kim, including flying to visit Communist North Korea by crossing the famous DMZ.  Mr. Trump also hosted China's Communist leader (Mr. Xi) in his Florida home. Yet, he as well as his Vice-President Pence and entire family turn around to call Mr. Biden and the Democratic Party leaders radical Socialists, who are trying to establish Socialism in America "to destroy the American way of life.". Really?

My students and their smart classmates think that, if America happened to be an African country, only a coup can stop Mr. Trump from "stealing" the presidential election. They also cited the "defunding" of the U.S. Postal System to make it hard to deliver November 2020 mail meant for the presidential election.

The same students smartly remembered how Mr. Trump wanted his high profile junkets and meetings with dictators and America's adversaries to net for him the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, which went to Ethiopia's  leader. Angrily, Mr. Trump decided to punish the Ethiopian Head of W.H.O. We all know Mr. Trump's punishment for W.H.O. now!

If Mr. Trump happened to be  an African leader, won't a coup d'etat be in order to remove him from further damage to the nation, its psyche,  health and image? My students  asked me. Please, what are your answers?

A.B. Assensoh.

Donald Trump does not seem to have the dispositions of a democrat.
He looks very much like someone who would take electoral defeat
badly. It should be interesting what happens in November.

Very interesting indeed after November no matter who wins. I, for o e, think it is important that Americans go through this experience with clear eyes..the country will survive it because so many people have too much to lose. Maybe some meaningful changes can come out of the post election activities/chaos!!
The excessive globalization,  delocalization, extremes inequalities are not sustainable in a democracy.
