------------ PRESS RELEASES

December 26, 2009

Prof. Dora Akunyili, minister of information and communications, issued the following statement:

“Federal Government of Nigeria received with dismay the news of an attempted terrorist attack on a US airline. We state very clearly that as a nation, we abhor all forms of terrorism. The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has directed Nigerian security agencies to commence full investigation of the incident. While steps are being taken to verify the identity of the alleged suspect and his motives, our security agencies will cooperate fully with the American authorities in the on-going investigations. Nigerian government will be providing updates as more information becomes available."

Here is the text of the statement from the family of the Nigerian man accused of trying to bring down a U.S.-bound airliner.

Our family, like the rest of the world, were woken up in the early hours of Saturday, 26th December, 2009 to the news of an attempt to blow up a plane by a young Nigerian man, who was later identified as Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab. Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab is the son of Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru AbdulMutallab, the head of this Family.

Prior to this incident, his father, having become concerned about his disappearance and stoppage of communication while schooling abroad, reported the matter to the Nigerian security agencies about two months ago, and to some foreign security agencies about a month and a half ago, then sought their assistance to find and return him home. We provided them with all the information required of us to enable them do this. We were hopeful that they would find and return him home. It was while we were waiting for the outcome of their investigation that we arose to the shocking news of that day.

The disappearance and cessation of communication which got his mother and father concerned to report to the security agencies are completely out of character and a very recent development, as before then, from very early childhood, Farouk, to the best of parental monitoring, had never shown any attitude, conduct or association that would give concern. As soon as concern arose, very recently, his parents, reported it and sought help.

The family will continue to fully cooperate with local and international security agencies towards the investigation of this matter, while we await results of the full investigation.

We, along with the whole world, are thankful to Al-Mighty God that there were no lives lost in the incident. May God continue to protect us all, amen.
Finally, as the matter is being investigated by the various agencies, and has already been mentioned in a US court, the family requests that the press should regard this as the only statement it will make for now.

Thank you.

Signed
The Mutallab Family

MEND PRESS RELEASE

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) condemns the attempted act of terrorism on Delta flight 253 into the United States by a misguided Islamic extremist from the Northern part of Nigeria.

Had the plan been successful, it would have left many families across the globe grieving on a day when Christians celebrate the birth of a peace maker, Jesus Christ. It should by now be evident that the threat to world peace will not emerge from the Niger Delta, a region agitating for justice as is acknowledged by every right thinking human being, but from the Islamic extremist northern part of Nigeria covertly supported by its elite who assume leadership of Nigeria to be the birthright of this region.

This attempted act of terrorism by this northern Islamic extremist does not come as a surprise to any Nigerian. For decades, Christians have been murdered and raped in the north of Nigeria with impunity. No northern Muslim has ever been brought to book for the thousands of Christians killed in this region. Northern Nigeria is fertile ground for international terrorism.. The Nigerian government has persistently turned a blind eye to Islamic extremists coming from Northern Nigeria, choosing instead  to focus and waste its resources on military hardware and troop deployment in the Niger Delta.
The government of Nigeria which unfortunately has been dominated by the north since independence has bred such undesirable elements under false pretexts with the hope of creating a reserve army to counter agitation in the south and other parts of Nigeria. In spite of this embarrassment to the nation, the government will not re-direct its military to the North, neither will the rights of  these violent people be trampled as is the case in the Niger Delta. The minister for defense who is a shameless stooge will not dare consider any actions in the north likely to anger the northern elite who have for decades condoned all forms of extremism.
If this act of terrorism had been carried out against the christian south of Nigeria, it would undoubtedly have been covered up as the government is so quick to do.
The young man who attempted this cowardly act is not alone and governments around the world should pay more attention to northern Nigeria with its threat to world peace than to agitation for justice in the Niger Delta which only threatens world oil prices". Jomo Gbomo

NIGERIA DEMOCRATIC LIBERTY FORUM (NDLF) Press release;  A SAD DAY FOR NIGERIA.

December 26th 2009; New York, NY; It is another sad day for Nigeria to have one of her citizens involve in a terrorist activity. This is an uncharted territory for us not minding the fact that we have been mentioned in shameful deeds like fraud and corruption but the NDLF can say that Nigerians across the globe are truly saddened. We strongly condemn in unequivocal terms the attempt by this individual to  blow up a passenger airliner carrying almost 300 passengers! This act should be thoroughly investigated and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is indefensible to attempt such a heinous and vicious act under any religious, political ideology or justification.

This incident is also symptomatic of an ignored problem in Nigeria where some religious bigots have over the years embarked on killing spree with the government unable to tackle the issue. Going by available reports, the identified 23 years old terrorism suspect is a UK graduate and a son of a wealthy Nigerian who apparently had been brainwashed by religious extremists. One can imagine the danger posed by millions of neglected, unemployed, impressionable Nigerians that the Nigerian system has failed and could be target for terrorism recruits. We hope that this unfortunate incident would be a wake up call for the Nigerian government to appreciate the grave consequences and the ramification of this reprehensible act. A nation whose leader has been in a foreign hospital for about 5 weeks with no word on his state of health, possible date of return and unwillingness to resign or handover to his deputy thus creating a vacuum in leadership might just be unable to approach this issue with all seriousness and finesse that it requires so that all her citizens are not branded as terrorists.

The NDLF hereby call on President Umaru Yar'Adua to either resign immediately or formally handover to his deputy so that someone can provide direction and leadership to a nation that is clearly on a precipice and brought to ridicule by the act of a son of an elite in Nigeria. Apparently, destroying the educational system in Nigeria, depriving the youths and the citizenry of a quality life while the Nigerian elites have their children in western countries far from adequate parental control is a frankenstein monster that has brought shame to every Nigerian.

Members of the political class, civil society, labor and professional organizations should put pressure on President Yar'Adua to act patriotically to end the current siege in Nigeria. To millions of Nigerians in the Diaspora, who are hard working and law abiding we implore them to continue to be good ambassadors of Nigeria and ensure that we charge those who are poised to continue to drag our reputation in the mud to desist from such acts that bring disrepute and opprobrium to us all.

Forging Towards Economic Integrity through Commerce between the United States and Nigeria

NICOCUSA Denounces Terrorist Act Perpetrated by Umar Farouk Abdulmutalib
We at the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce-USA (NICOCUSA) wish to express our discontent regarding the foiled terrorist attack on NWA flight 253 perpetrated by a Nigerian national Umar Farouk Abdulmutalib on December 25, 2009. The Nigerian community is outraged by Abdulmutalib’s senseless attempt to harm the innocent and as a result further tarnish Nigeria’s global image. With a growing population of over 150 million people divided between Christians, Muslims, and over 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria is generally a nation of peace and tolerance. Nigerians tend to seamlessly assimilate into Western Society making them the largest group of contemporary African immigrants worldwide. Nigeria boasts a robust economy, stable democratic government, and is the largest US trade partner in Sub-Saharan Africa. As the crown jewel of Africa, Nigeria has outstretched its boundaries at several moments in history, helping to end deadly conflicts in war ravaged nations like Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Nigeria is by no means a breeding ground for terrorism. To date, there is no known evidence indicating Al-Qaeda’s presence in Nigeria. Nevertheless the Nigerian government is poised and prepared to thwart any known or suspected acts of insurgency. In July of 2009, by order of his Excellency President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, a joint military/police led task force was launched against Boko Haram, a violent terrorist group based in the Northern part of Nigeria. The joint force successfully besieged Boko Haram killing its leader Mohammed Yusuf and dismantling the sect. Boko Haram was notorious for their anti-Western sentiments and fatal attacks against Nigerian police and civilians.
The recent attack on an American airliner in US airspace on the one hand, emphasizes the pervasiveness of this unique form of hatred and demonstrates its ability to transcend race, gender, culture, and socio-economic boundaries. Ironically, on the other hand, Abdulmutalib’s act underscores some of the core values of the Nigerian culture. Nigerians band together in times of jubilation and in times of sorrow. Beyond this, Nigerians stand for the truth even if it involves implicating one of their own.  Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, Abdulmutalib’s father demonstrated this Nigerian core value by reporting his son’s radical/terrorist views and affiliations to the US authorities.
Nigeria is a blessed country and Nigerians are great people. We at the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce-USA stand in solidarity with Nigeria, the United States, and the International community to categorically condemn this cowardly act as callous and immoral. Therefore, the Nigerian Chamber Commerce-USA’s remains committed to Nigeria’s economic development through commerce between the United States and Nigeria.
Sincerely,

For Immediate Press Release

Nigerian accused of attacking US passenger jet. Terrorism is not in our character - arisenigeria condemns act.

The reported attempt at blowing up an American Airliner (Northwest Airlines Flight 253) by a Nigerian, Mr Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, is an escalation of the consequences and deepening crisis of governance and lax security in Nigeria. In particular it highlights the abusive manipulation of religion by those who are bent on destroying Nigeria and everything Nigerian in their desire to impose their will on the peace loving people of our country.

Nigerians have continued to witness an increasing tendency towards religious extremism especially since 1999 when the country returned to democratic governance. The use of state resources to further the course of religious views in parts of the country and the failure of the federal government to uphold the secularity of the Nigerian state has served to emboldened those who would stop at nothing until their views are forced onto the rest of the citizens by any which way ever.

It has to be noted that tens of thousand of Nigerians have been murdered in cold blood by religious extremists within the shores of Nigeria without a noticeable action on the part of the government to deal with root causes of this slide to lawlessness and anarchy.

Whilst we applaud the actions and statements credited to the Nigerian government and security officials, as well the steps taken by the father of the said individual involved in this dastardly act, we hasten to add that the government should take a closer look at the root causes of the ugly development in the country. The attempt to turn Nigeria into an Islamic state can only lead to anarchy and lawlessness in the scale witnessed in places such as Sudan and Somalia. The constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria is clear about the secularity of the country. Upholding the statute should become a priority of the Federal government and membership of all religious organisation(s) to which Nigeria has been signed into must be reviewed as a matter of urgency.

There is also the need to have a responsive government that is willing to provide jobs to the millions of unemployed youths in Nigeria and put an end to the culture of mass illiteracy in Nigeria.

This incident is also a wake up call for the international community, and friends of Nigeria to diligently collaborate with the forces of progress campaigning for the further democratisation, and equitable and sustainable development of Nigeria. It has to be noted that Nigeria has the highest population of Muslims than any country in Africa. Since independence, the country has witnessed varying degrees of manipulation of religion as part of the power politics of the country’s ruling class. From the late 70s, through the 80s and up to this century, there has been repeated organised pogrom of non Muslims. With the apparent merger of these domestic extremist tendencies with international al-Qaeda, the reactionary manipulation of Islam in Nigeria can no longer be ignored.

The sources of funding for these extremist activities can therefore no longer be ignored by both the Nigerian government and international community.

No doubt Nigerians around the world are concerned about the potential effect of this development on their credibility. arisenigeria however believes that the moment calls for a renewed commitment towards awakening and/or creating the much needed spirit of true Nigerian Nationalism. The behaviour of Mr Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab shames us all. This much, the actions of Mr Abdulmutallab (Snr) demonstrates, that is, as a people it is not in our culture to participate in the kind of mass hatred and murders that the world has witnessed in the last couple of years.  Nigerians must engage with and make it clear that we all crave international peace, harmony and religious tolerance. We must renew our call and work toward the fight against every form of corruption and bigotry – religious, political and financial in Nigeria as all of these are intertwined in delivery pain and poverty to us all.

Dr Philip Idaewor                                 Mr Charles Eze
For and behalf of arisenigeria.

RE: UMAR ABDULMUTALLAB - CHAMPIONS FOR NIGERIA (CFN) CONDEMN TERRORIST ATTEMPTS AND ACTIVITIES

Champions For Nigeria (CFN), an umbrella organisation of Nigerians in the Diaspora, incorporated in England and Wales, condemn all forms of terrorist activities. We express deep regret over the attempt by Nigerian-born Umar Farouq Abdulmutallab to blow up Flight 253 with explosive devices at the Detroit, Michigan, USA Airport on December 25, 2009.

Nigerians all over the world are unanimous in their condemnation of this cowardly act. Such action is not representative of the character of Nigerian citizens. We are a peace-loving people who make positive contributions in whatever community we reside.

Champions For Nigeria would like to stress the point that this terrorist incident was an individual action, and does not represent the true character of more than 150 million Nigerians.

Nigeria is definitely not a breeding ground for terrorism of any description; be it domestic or international. We support the Nigerian government’s position, preparedness, and commitment to thwart any known or suspected acts of terrorism in our society by working with the governments of the United States of America, and other nations in snuffing out global terrorism.

Champions For Nigeria express our gratitude to God that the attempt to destroy innocent lives and property on Christmas; a day Christians worldwide celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, a peace-loving individual, was foiled. We urge the international community to regard this incident as an isolated act of a misguided and radicalised Nigerian citizen who has allowed religious overzealousness to becloud his mind, without regard to the negative impact his actions would have on further tarnishing the global image of Nigeria.

We would like to remind everyone that Nigerians generally are law-abiding citizens. We tolerate diverse political and religious views. We are productive, peaceful, and hard working.  These attributes have been demonstrated by Dr Mutallab who, on sensing the strange behaviour of his son, quickly reported him to American Embassy officials and the Nigerian law enforcement authorities.

Nigerians hereby promise to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with the United States, and all responsible nations in the international community in the fight against global terrorism.

Long live Nigeria, Long Live CFN.

COTTAGE CITY, MD., December 27, 2009…Egbe Omo Yoruba, National Association of
Yoruba Descendants in North America (Egbe), representing members of the largest
Ethnic Nigerian Group in the World, categorically states, for the record, that
acts of terrorism as alleged to have been attempted by a one Umar
Abdul-Mutallab aboard a Delta/Northwest Airline flight over US air space, is a
very cowardly and dastardly act which is not condoned by any traditional
culture of Nigeria or imported religion to Nigeria and is against the basic

As Nigerian-Americans of Yoruba descent, or Yoruba residing in North America,
we urge all fellow Americans to resist negative stereotyping of all Nigerians,
