Can you define 'pop artist' for me, as opposed
to other kinds of artists?
This is a serious question.

This is a serious answer.
Pop art is best symbolized by the Campbell's Soup
can reproductions.
or 16 silk screened repros of a Marilyn Munroe
head shot on one sheet of paper
ie popular objects reproduced hence "pop"
Leo Castelli and Ivan Carp made millions pushing
4 or 5 artists who produced that stuff. It didn't
turn me on because to me it was simply decoration
but it was better than the photo realists (paint
by numbers)
A Warhol silkscreen went for a couple mil at
auction in NY about 10 days ago
BTW I think "pop artist" is a misnomer. There are
a lot of artists who make "Pop" art but the only
"Pop artists " of which I am familiar are those
who sing "pop" songs

Thanks for the information, LP.

What would you call these artists, then? They're
certainly not traditional. And how would we
include them in a newsgroup called us.arts.artists?
Henrietta

Yeah, that just might do it.
us.arts.artists is an unmoderated newsgroup for
the discussion of both traditional and contemporary
US artists and their work.

Hmmmmmm.... That has a very good ring to it.
"Pop" art is no longer "Chic" but the "Stars" are
still grabbing record prices at auctions.
They are getting 7 figures now... do I hear 8...
7,7 do I hear 8 ... 8, 8, 8,
8 going once! going twice! <bang gavel> gone for 8
figures to the little man with the big cigar.
