So I'm just getting started with Rails (I've completed the RailsTutorial twice and have been learning everything else through Rails Casts) and I'm working on my first web app. I'm coming from Java and I'm loving Rails so far.

I'm looking for someone to review my code and who I can turn to when I get stuck. It'd be great if we could meet in person once a week for 2 hours or so to discuss my app's progress.

If anyone else is interested in receiving tutoring, we could put together a study group and share the cost of paying for the tutor.

I live in Riverton and would be happy to drive to Provo or Salt Lake City depending on where people are available.

If you are interested in tutoring or joining a study group please respond.

Thanks!

-Nelson

I'm in about the same place as you Nelson, except I have written code on a regular basis for a couple of years.

I'd be interested in joining the group and splitting costs.

I'm in Riverton, and while I wouldn't really consider myself an expert, I get paid to do Rails, so I'm happy to help out.

I am in the same boat as Nelson. I would be very interested in this. Unfortunately I am sitting up in Twin Falls, ID which makes running down to Salt Lake or vicinity a little tough. If there were some other options for online help that would be great.

Google Hangouts, screen sharing, Skype… numerous ways to solve that problem. Remote pairing is great.

Awesome! I'm glad to see that this could come together. What night of the week works best for you/Trip/Jim? I'm available Tues-Saturday nights.

Hey everyone.  I've taken on a new programmer, teaching him the basics of Ruby and Rails.  He just built his first Rails application yesterday (two models and a few views).  We've gone over the basics of classes and methods and things.  Next Tuesday at 6:00 we're planning on reviewing these things and then getting started with the Ruby Koans.  If you guys want to join in, we could do a Skype call.  I outlined the plan for getting Chase up and running here: http://bit.ly/IMgPH3  So far, we're following these guidelines and it's working out all right.  The easiest thing might be to just add me to your Skype contact list, mudrosten, and we can go from there.

I would love to be in on this as well! I have been plugging away at Ruby and Rails, but have gotten distracted with another project and am itching to get going again. I am in Provo, but have done remote pairing with Brandon before and it works great for me!

Hello,

I just joined last night and am working through tutorials in Ruby,
Rails, and Watir. I would love to be able to join your Skype group if
you are still accepting people. I plan on being at the meeting on the
12th (wherever it will be held) (oh and it is my anniversary...how's
that for commitment :) ). Anyway my skype name is steve 220221. I
would greatly benefit from this type of interaction. Hopefully soon, I
can start giving back.

That sounds great. I will participate remotely, unless I can find my way to Sandy some day.

I'm glad to see such a great turn out of people who are looking to jump-start their Rails education. I've spoken with Corey Woodcox, and he is happy to mentor whoever would like to join us on Wednesday nights. We will plan on starting 6/13/2012 and continue on a weekly basis as long as everyone is interested.

The format will be QA based on our own individual projects. Everyone will bring 2-3 questions each week and we will go through them together as a group with Corey moderating the discussions.

We will be meeting at the Jordan Commons tower in Sandy, but remote participants are more than welcome. We will do a screenshare of whoever is presenting their questions so everyone can participate.

As far as cost goes, Corey has indicated that he would like to be compensated based on a tip system. If you find his help useful, you can pay what you feel comfortable with. I'd encourage you to be generous of course, so as to keep Corey (and any other future mentors) invested/interested in our success.

It looks like good things are happening all around.  A few of us have had a couple of Skype sessions where we've been practicing with Koans, reviewing a Rails app Chase built and built another app together.  We also end up in practical discussions about deployment, tmux, Heroku, Chef, Capistrano, technical blogging, testing, just whatever is on people's minds.  Anyone's welcome to come.

Our plan is to meet on Monday at 6:00 on Skype and review the Rails app we built today and take it from there.  So, if anyone wants to join in, you can just contact me on Skype.  My handle is mudrosten.

Also, here are a couple of links with notes for those of you who would like to see what we're up to.

We had a good talk tonight.  Some details are found here: http://bit.ly/LOqgql.  We'll meet again on Thursday at 6:00 (just Skype for now).  We're all excited for URUG tomorrow night.

Friendly reminder:

Tonight is our first study session with Corey Woodcox. We will be meeting at the Jordan Commons tower (9400 South State Street - Sandy, Utah) from 7-9pm. The format will be Q&A. Bring whatever you have been working on and we can talk through it as a group.

For anyone looking to join us remotely, we can use whatever remote technologies work best. My experience is that Skype doesn't do group video calls for free, so I would recommend Google+. Feel free to respond with your opinion on this.

We look forward to seeing you tonight!

I'm open to doing another Google hangout tomorrow from 7-9pm.

For anyone who is interested, bring 1-2 well thought out questions or problems you have with whatever you are working on and we'll see if we can figure them out together.

Matt, are you on Google+? If so, add me and I'll get you invited for tomorrow.

I am not on Google+. I had it because I clicked the button one day and google kept including me in users so I deleted my account. Is there a way to get an invite without using Google+?

We use Google hangouts to do group video call/screen share, so it'll be pretty difficult to join us with out it.

The site as a social network might be a ghost town, but their hangout feature is pretty impressive.

what do you mean you can't get a rails server on ubuntu? Are you using a Linode/Webbynode or more like an installation in your own PC and you want to play with RoR? Have you tried doing railstutorial.org? They have an extensive guide in there. If you really want someone to show you, I'd be happy to do it for you thru TeamViewer.

I like the original title of the post:  Is there someone who can tutor me for 2 hours to get a rails server on ubuntu working-happy to pay.  I have tried several times, but I keep getting errors.  Writing the code with webrick works fine.  However, deploying to my linux box does not work for me.  Is there someone who would like to make some money showing me how to do this?

thank you,

John
