The survivors reach the maintenance shaft and climb up a ladder. However, they encounter a locked hatch that blocks their way. Konstantinov tries to break it with a crowbar, but fails. He then decides to use a flare gun to shoot at the hatch, hoping to attract the attention of the rescuers. However, the flare ignites the methane gas in the shaft, causing a huge explosion that kills Denis and injures Alisa. The hatch is also blown open, allowing the survivors to escape.
They emerge on the surface near the Kremlin and are greeted by a crowd of people and media. Garin reunites with his wife Irina, who has been looking for him and Ksenya. He tells her that Ksenya is dead and that he knows about her affair with Konstantinov. He also tells her that he still loves her and wants to save their marriage. Irina is shocked and remorseful, but also relieved that Garin is alive.
Konstantinov is taken away by an ambulance, but not before he sees Garin and Irina together. He realizes that he has lost Irina and that his selfish actions have caused many deaths. He also sees Galina, who has survived the explosion and has found her dog. She gives him a scornful look and walks away with her dog.
The film ends with a voice-over by Garin, who reflects on the fragility of life and the importance of love. He says that he hopes that one day, people will learn to live in harmony with each other and with nature.
