Iam working on a sign and my wife would like the tail on the front and back side a little shorter with changing the size of the letter. In my mind I am thinking of cutting a section out of the middle of the tail and then reattaching the ends. I do not have a specific measurement as I will need to adjust as I go for figuring the size. It seems to me there should be a way to do it, but I cannot figure it out. I have tried editing the nodes, but when I delete a point, the whole thing goes away. Below is the font in question.

@RalphU I finally got back to this project. I was waiting to get my desktop set up so I could use a big monitor and proper mouse. After placing the two lines about 1" apart on the font (the whole phrase is 16"x80") and hit T after putting the curser between the lines, I am finding whole sections are disappearing well outside the line. On the little curly part I am trying to shorten on the top of the left side one the whole line is gone. The bottom, the parts I want to edit are disappearing properly. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Ok, you are probably going to think I am nuts, but it seems to be working now. Convert to path is grayed out, so I do not have that option. All I did between when I was messing with it earlier today and now was restart the computer. Something must have reset

The Illustrator people told me that this would work and so I spent a boatload of money this stay at home mom does not have.. and now I'm awfully frustrated because 14 hours later....lots of tutorials later.

make the type outlines if it isn't already (Type > Create Outlines), select the anchor points you need to remove with the direct selection tool (white pointer), then Object > Path > Remove Anchor Points. you may want to add some points to the path where you want it to end with the pen tool beforehand.

Try this, on the step shown on your last screenshot in post #5, pick the Eraser tool, the shortcut for it is Shift + E, then hold Alt key on you keyboard (Option if you are on a mac) and draw a rectangle where you want the part of the f removed. It will erase only from the selected path so don't worry if you draw the erasing rectangle over unselected letters, it won't erase those.

edit: You can also erase it with more than one rectangle by repeating the step, for example draw the erasing rectangle by starting with a line where you want it cut then drag down until the tail below the starting line is covered. Then if a part of the tail remains above the line erase it with another rectangle.

those blue dots around the 'f' are anchor points. with the white arrow, you should be able to select just the ones you want to remove and then just press the backspace key. doing what emil said may be more foolproof.

When two or more objects are selected, to select only one or some of them, with the Selection tool, in addition to first clicking on an empty spot to deselect as Jacob suggested, you can also click and drag from the empty spot to draw a selection box. Only objects that are partially or entirely overlapped by the selection box will be selected. In case there is not an empty spot, for example when zoomed in or viewing a portion of the artwork made with fills taking the whole window, what I usually do is using the shortcut Shift + Ctrl + A which deselects any selection. Using the main menu you can find it in Select > Deselect.

Pressing the Delete key on your keyboard deletes what is selected. If your 6 years old have used the computer it will be one of the first things discovered. In his instructions Jacob assumed that you know this. So, assuming you don't, his instructions would be like this:

You need to deselect the whole f which now consists of two independent paths, just click an empty spot on the Artboard with the Selection Tool, then click the unwanted tail part to have that alone selected and delete it; you can just hit the Delete key.

Hi, I have not been able to figure out the unicodes everyone is using so I just purchased the Morgana font to try and use their swashes and tails. Has anyone else had success adding the tails/swashes? I finally was able to add them but they do not look like the ones in my font book.

Just open the Morgana Chart in the design tool, then open/edit the text box that contains the swash you want to use, copy the appropriate character (they're invisible when you open the edit text tool, so you have to count as you move your cursor to get the right one), then paste it into your design.

ETA - I find it hard to figure out which ligatures are beginning and ending ones when I just see them in isolation, so I made my own "cheat sheet" using each one in a word so it's easier for me to see them in action.

If so, would you be able to let me know where I can find Laura's swashes and tails? I would also appreciate if you have instructions on which specific special characters to use. E.g. Which ligatures begin and end for every letter of each font.

I have a UILabel set with a font of system bold 14.0, a minimum font size of 12.I want the label to fill 7 lines, and if it's too big, shrink the text down to 12 pixels, in which case it might be more than 7 lines, but still fit in it's original frame.

I've tried setting the number of lines to 7 and to 0. Either way the text just fills the 7 lines at the default size (14) and truncates the tail. How can I get the text to shrink down to 12px so that I can see more text?

You can use .adjustsFontSizeToFitWidth=YES this will adjust the font size to fit the width of the label. For example, if you have a label with numberOfLines=2 and the text is too long, the font size of the label will be reduced to fit all the text.

Hi there,

is it possible to change the font color of custom tail number?

Im flying default cessna 152 and when I pick my own registration its in black color. It usually looks bad on the liveries.

I am quite sure that there was a white color also for a tail number as I have seen that on some youtube videos (even the default asxgs).

Any ideas?
